MGS is about giant mecha robots! Cyborg ninjas with swords deflecting bullets! Villains with psychic powers! And freakin vampires!!

MGS is about as far away as you can get from something Tom Clancy would be involved in.

I wish I could add something more substantive but

I totally agree

I am one of the people who gets pissed every time they compare MGS with SC :p

They arent even trying to be similar and MGS has so many things as a series that SC does not have.

For me MGS is a novel filled with creativity. SC is a very good videogame.

Anyways I dont know why people are complaining about the game's animation. Some of the unimportant or generic animations are similar or the same to MGS3, but almost all of it is new and very well done.

I see too much nitpicking by some in here as well. Why not talk about the good stuff too? :???:

I saw the trailer a few moments ago and I must say the additions, improvements and ideas put into the game easily overshadow small details some people complain about.

The best example of awesome animation was when snake crawled off the ledge, grabbed on, and then flipped down onto his feet. It was really awesome.

In the defense of some of the board members I think many have already expressed praise of the games positives..

I think it probably says a bit more about the nature of discussion which causes the negatives to promote alot more active discussion (hey if everyone agrees the game is amazing then what's there left to discuss..? :p )

There is a new video here with David Hayter speaking in hilariously bad Japanese.

And another one with old man Stan Lee congratulating Kojima.

The gameplay in mgs4 is freakin' awesome!

Nice gameworld
good env fx
great animation
nice varied sound fx
good lighting

There were a few things I thought were unrealistic (mostly AI), but it is a game afterall.

Looks to be my fav nextgen game at this point.

Seems I'm destined for a ps3 in 2008. They better drop the price!!

The most important thing on seeing the gameplay trailer is the love these people process to its work, the same intangible love that could be perceived in games like Starcraft and Half life and that converted them in master pieces.

Looks less Green in those ones. I love the Oil Drum weapon!

Still some dodgy textures in use, from those screenshots.

Agreed.

The details that in and of themselves, would not be noticable and most companies would say "aren't worth the time" have been carefully crafted into this game and the result as you said can be seen and appreciated on the screen by those that pay attention as collectively, they demonstrate a level of detail and attention that is very rare these days.

Very refined.

Maybe, but it also begs the question how large the battlefield is and exactly when did it kick in. If it only starts as Snake make his way into a certain section of the map, followed by two sides taking taking shots in a stalemate waiting for snake too help them then its still scripted.
Maybe not as big as GTA, but hopefully they can make it a battlefield GTA game with a ton of freedom in 7 months left!

I have played them and even in the most harder settings, they are still stupid. They do fancy routines, but they're EXACTLY the same EVERY time. It gets boring after a couple of times.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, but of course it would be stupid since following fancy routines is exactly what most A.I. is about. Get the hang of it and it becomes quite easy to trick it.

Still, the flaws you pointed out from the trailer aren't exactly justified, given that state of awareness was only present on the very easy difficulty settings in the previous two Metal Gear games. On difficulty set to hard or extreme, the AI shows a level of awareness that is quite good - i.e. in MGS2, at the beginning on the ship, if you run around too quick, the noise and movement will actually trigger one of the enemies 2 floors further up to suspect something and come and have a look. That's quite different to the easy setting where the same can be done a few feet away and he'd still wouldn't really notice. The level of awareness in the demo was most probably on very low - if you have played the previous games, I think that much would be obvious that the level of awareness of soldiers will sharpen up in higher difficulty settings with the final game.

Also, as others have mentioned - MGS isn't just about realism - it's about gameplay and having fun too. Which is why I expect noisy drum cans to be usuable to surprise some soldiers eventhough they make a lot of noise. ;)

Saw this on GAF and thought I'd share. Perhaps this shots of the trailer off the Sony Online Store (JP) is a better indication of the colour hue in the game, rather from the direct feed trailers that have a relatively low bitrate.

Cheers Phil

Those only seem better because they were photographed off a TV. The PSN video is also low bit rate. It's 15mins of 720p video packed down to ~600MB so it suffers quite a bit from IQ loss.

I thought that much, though it's quite difficult to replicate the colours of those "shots off the screen" using Photoshop and some screengrabs of the downloadable version - which led me to believe it may be down to bitrate of the Sony Online store version.

Regardless, I think they already look much closer to the impressive original E3 trailer.

Speaking of which - while the original E3 trailer was excellent in terms of colour etc, I remember the direct screen grabs distributed by Konami directly at the time to be quite a bit far off as well.
