Regarding the AI, to their defense for a short 15min presentation you don't want unpredictable behavior in your AI. You want basically need everything to go down to plan.

Hopefully in the full game there will more emergent behavior and the patching and attack points won't be completely static.

The new gameplay trailers looked great, aside for the brain dead AI that is.

It's a freaking demonstration of gameplay mechanics for the most part obviously the AI of the soldiers has been dumbed down, kojima is even show casing it with cheats on for fuck sakes.

I finally had the chance to watch the game(play) in motion and am impressed. The most impressive feat IMO, is the seamless change between three different views. I disagree with some on the animations. They are better than in MGS3 (duh) and much better than in the previous (TGS) trailer, which seemed to be nothing but rehashed MSG3 animations. MGS games give you a ton of freedom in movement and MGS4 gives much more and more fluidly. It doesn't compare to what I've seen with Drake, but considering the number of animations I still am impressed with Kojima's work.

And yes there was a downgrade and it is most apparent in the skin and hair of Snake. The game still looks great and we've only been showed the same 10 minute segment over and over.

Come on, how could you believe that its changing realtime? Its so obviously scripted.
Hence "super-impressed" ;) As Phil writes the game play suggested was a realtime battlefield, it'll be interesting to spectate bots (soldiers, vehicles, unmanned drones) warring against each other while destructing objects.

I gotta say this game looks Phenomenal IMO. The PS3 is really starting to show what it can do visually and I can't think of a non PS3 console game on the horizon that can hang with this. To see it actually being physically played and looking as it does really made my day.

Maybe, but it also begs the question how large the battlefield is and exactly when did it kick in. If it only starts as Snake make his way into a certain section of the map, followed by two sides taking taking shots in a stalemate waiting for snake too help them then its still scripted.

The new gameplay trailers looked great, aside for the brain dead AI that is. Although watching the vid I got the feeling that Kojima has taken a long hard look at splinter cell for inspiration.

I do hope that the PMC guys show a little better initiative in a firefight instead of marching single file at Snake.

I must say I was a bit dissapointed with the demonstration, the gameplay didn't seem quite like I was expecting since they had said it was to be a stealth game (and all praises). The thing that the barrel just appears or disappears over Snake and that he can roll it over the enemies gave me a bad taste in the mount (just seemed to arcadish).
I hope though that the final is different and I'll might pick it up.

And the AI was a disapointment (dumb demo mode?), they didn't react to sounds (footsteps, metal noise from barrel etc). And what is up with these low-res/detail effects (fire etc) seen in many console games nowdays, like the fire under the van. :???:

I don't know, but it looked a bit "lifeless" to me (hope it change for final).

You've never played a MGS game before right?

If you must know, it's totally a MGS style thing to do.

No I have not played the previous MGS games. I guess I was expecting a more 'Splinter Cell' type of stealth and realism.

MGS gameplay can be described as aracadey [sic] faux realism. Kojima goes through great lengths to have enemy formations, gun play and uniforms be releastic yet juxtaposes these realisms next to anime storylines and humor. Note that in the games, the player has always been able to carry every weapon Snake comes across. Either this is purposely arcadey or Snake has a large anal cavity.

It IS the middle of a battle zone so i'm sure the soldiers on both sides will be hard pressed to even hear footsteps from snake, even if he's merely a few feet away..

Not to mention the fact that it was a demo..

Enemies in MGS games have always been suprisingly interesting with regards to their AI so I wouldn't worry about that at all..

The visual differences are due to the lack of that greeny/yellow hue that the game had when it was fist shown. Its now completely gone thus changing the look of the whole game.
Lighting and shaders are totally different too.

Ever think they added more DOF and motion blur?
It already had DOF. They just added ghosting. (well, in the Mk II view, there's MB, but only there).

I'm not sure if you've played any of the previous Metal Gear games on the PS2, but the AI is quite dependant on the difficulty setting. Having played MGS2 and 3 on the more difficult and extreme settings, I can assure you that the AI isn't always as blind, deaf and stupid. In fact, quite the opposite. I do agree though that they could be seen as "stupid", at least when you start to figure out the pattern of the enemy behaviour and how best to trick them. On the other hand, that's what I find most enjoyable about the MGS games - figuring out those patterns and start to explore the AI by playing with the enemy.
I have played them and even in the most harder settings, they are still stupid. They do fancy routines, but they're EXACTLY the same EVERY time. It gets boring after a couple of times.

I just watched the presentation video. It looks like a fun game, but in general the animation is pretty bad except for cutscenes. I can remember when people wee using the cut scene's as an example of next generation animation, despite the fact it's just straight motion capture. It seems pretty funny compared to the in game animations imo.
Indeed. They even recycled animations from MGS2 :???:

If I am to take a guess, it's not because of the trailer, but because Kojima has hinted at such gameplay elements...
I still remember Kojima said the environments would be almost fully destructable (hence, the "nowhere to hide" thing) but now they're the opposite. You see quite a lot of explosions next to buildings and other structures and nothing happens.

It's the same with FPS. Some allow you to carry only 2 or 3 diferent guns but most don't.

It is not only footsteps, but the metal barrel sound etc and yes it is a demo but the "flaw" (maybe the devs want it like that?) is still there.

I don't know but some pictures I see look great like the ones here.

Then every other website they looked all washed out.

That shot itself isn't direct feed; you're likely seeing the result of some display-applied saturation / color adjustment.

yeah I forgot to mention the AI
I'm not a fan of MGS, but I dont hate it either. I've just never played. trying to give an unbiased opinion. there are parts that really impress me. I feel the ambience could be much better though (different colors all around), and the AI is rediculous, I'm sorry. an oil drum makes a lot of noise when it falls on its side, and so does rolling around quickly with a heavy object inside. those baddies were just a few meters away and were completelly oblivious to it. there are other moments as well where I felt the AI was really deaf.

hopefully they'll fix it.

What's lacking is the animations. The original trailer was all captured. The anims here look very PS2 MGS. TBH it's quite refreshing for me to see a game that's happy to be a game in that respect. The movements and actions aren't realistic. The guy can bang about in a steel drum that appears from nowhere without alerting enemies! But it destroys much of the illusion that was so prevalent in the 05 trailer. The trailer was like watching a movie (shocker!) whereas this is like watching a game.

I don't know why anyone is surprised. Is MGS foriegn to all of you?

It's always been like this, there's never been amazing animation for game, and same for cutscene. It was *always* known that the first trailers were cutscenes and not gameplay. How is anyone surprised, let alone disappointed?

MGS is about giant mecha robots! Cyborg ninjas with swords deflecting bullets! Villains with psychic powers! And freakin vampires!!

MGS is about as far away as you can get from something Tom Clancy would be involved in.
