New Mark Rein interview

How does mark rein discussion end up with the old E305 debate again? I mean it is quite obvious that Sony filled E305 with marketing and deceptive CG footage. But hasn't this been discussed to death already?

I started writing a detailed rebuttle to this and realized there is no purpose in responding. The site has a certain lean and certain members enforce this lean. I've said my piece on the subject and I'll leave it at that.

...I just had a revalation! I believe when people were asking is that gameplay the general response was "you'll be playing that" or "thats rendered to spec". In the sense that ps3 will play hd movies I guess they weren't lying afterall as the videos should be well within the bluray 1080p spec.

I apologize to all.

*sigh* You should PM your reply to me in that case. :)

You see, what I described in my previous post is my personal experience as part of the team to implement a nationwide broadband infrastructure to every homes (and applications such as VOD, VoIP, online games, ...) in the early 90s in another country where most of the world are still using dial-up. The kind of product vision and mockups we need to do to secure funding within and outside the organization, solicit partners, keep them going for 5 years and also prep the consumers for higher price subscription plans is similar to pushing a next gen console (PS3 or Xbox 360).

Fooling consumers is the last thing you want to do because ultimately they decide your success/failure. People have to step back and see the bigger picture instead of zooming down to individual pixels in the trailers. In an overall sense, it's about painting a future for all the partners to shoot towards. The basic problem is always to communicate the value to the stakeholders while the technologies are not deployed yet. It's also about strong project management to keep things on track. This is very different from sitting in a board room and plotting a grand scheme to cheat little kids of their lollipop money so-to-speak.

As for rivalry between MS and Sony, I have a different opinion which may or may not be clear to you. I believe the biggest enemy of nextgen is actually the current standard gaming practices and PS 2 (But that's another topic altogether). MS vs Sony has very little to do with my comments (except that I keep highlighting the Halo 2 Trailer as a reference from MS side to try to tell you that the trailers are there perhaps for a good reason).

Finally I have also learned to be wary of the media. Ignorance, miscommunication, personality, readership/viewership and other agendas can get in the way of trying to see the picture.
My personal view is that the gaming media sucks.

I'm impressed how well the PR work even after so many months.

In case you haven't noticed, I said the above in a reluctant and somewhat helpless way. Don't fuel PR.

Big Announcement is Tomorrow

The big Gears of War announcement is Tomorrow.

And it appears some Wal*Mart employees have been receiving Gears of War promotional items.

Seams like release is near, I dont know any other reason why retailers would get GOW merchandise/goodies.

The day after PS3, huh? I wonder if a day or more before would have been more effective, giving would-be PS3 buyers something to consider about the alternative?

Maybe but its not like when a user walks into the store they will not see some GOW stuff splattered all over indicating tomorrow's the relase date?

True but Shifty's got a (very) good point. If a gamer goes into a store and not only sees all the ads and vids and demo station of gears but sees he can buy it today instead of waiting till tomorrow or next week for ps3 it could steer more potential buyers than a promise of something great tomorrow.

I wonder what would have happened if they launched on the same day? I guess MS wouldn't want to add to the PS3 queues with GOW buyers and make for more 'photo evidence of PS3 demand' if there is any! Is this just a US release date? Are they goingto time internationally the same 'day after'?

What are you guys talking about? PS3 launches after Gears does in North america. The one day difference is between PS3 launching in japan and gears launching in north ameirca.

This is the NA GoW release date (Nov 12th), the NA release date for the PS3 is 11/17 so it would give people an alternative in NA.

I dont know that the announced a Japan release date for GoW or if it would have mattered in that region.

Hahah you actually think anyone is going to be able to walk into a store in Nov 11 and actually BUY a PS3? I would be willing to put good money down that will not happen. Almost all the supply will be spoken for by pre-orders. And the do have extra's people will be lining up out side your store before it opens already dead set on getting a PS3.

One could also think that, from the other way, what if PS3's in store and showing some really amazing stuff? Launching GOW before hand means creating a buzz for it and getting exposure before PS3 releases, so potential customers start umming and erring about PS3. Johnny Bloggs has three mates round to play GOW and they all want their own XB360 to play it, right? A day after PS3, and little Timmy had Johnny and friends round last night to see his PS3 with some game or other and suddenly the others are wanting a PS3 instead of an XB360. Without much idea what's launching on PS3, though this has never been an issue in previous launches where launch games have always stunk on the whole, PS3 has some good stuff in progress and a lot of time spent these early titles. There is a chance something will appear on day 1 that shines. Getting in ahead of PS3 I think makes more sense.

ah - thanks for the clarification.

I hope this game is truly a suitable distraction/reaction to ps3 as they will despirately need a system seller at that point. - then again I wonder what Sony will do ad wise for ps3's launch. Will they invest heavy in marketing or will the launch speak for itself?

I imagine if gears is anywhere near as good as most think it will be ms will dump shedloads of ad dollars to steal as much mindshare from ps3 launch as possible.

My bad. I should read the Google articles rather than take info from the summaries! Ties in with my thinkings below though! Better to launch earlier than go head to head.

Scooby the NA release date for the PS3 is 11/17 NOT 12/17.

And the release date the Gears of War in Europe will be November 17th. Hmmmm....

Doh my bad.

I see where Shifty was going. I just felt so long as GOW was really close to the date, then it should be good enough...

Rein has said on an IRC channel that the game will ship on the 7th, but the 12th is the date when all stores shoudl have it.

I agree 100%, and also from the standpoint that if the game is the cat's ass like MS claims, 5 days could allow some word-of-mouth buzz to be generated on top of the marketing blitz they'll likely drop on us.
