The HDD price = iPod - a puny LCD - a plastic case - an IC to play MP3 off the HDD

At least over 80% of the entire iPod price I assume.

Na , 20% is the hardrive , 10% is the lcd , 5% is the casing , 5% is plastic and wires and 60% is the apple name

So where are they planning to store all this stuff? On 2 GB Memory Sticks?
So what about the hard drive? That's a little trickier. Many, at this point, believe Microsoft will opt for flash memory rather than the traditional hard drive found in the current Xbox, but things hardly seem nailed down. It's just as likely that the company will abandon any significant installed memory and will rely on the user's home network to store games.

(I first found out about the CNN article from DriverHeaven)

From what I've read of all the rumours and the recent Gizmondo interview with Gates, I think it is fairly clear that Microsoft will want to keep the PC with Windows as the centre of their vision, with xbox next acting as a client to that server. That means xb next won't most likely have a HD.

All xbox next game saves will be stored either on the Windows PC via wired or wireless lan, or in the "Live" service (they could sell a Live extension for a nominal fee for required space on the servers, or (wild guess) they could even integrate it with your Hotmail storage space :) )

If you need bigger storage, you connect the xbox next with your PC. Xbox next would include a version of the Windows XP Media edition (or whatsits official name) with same functionality, streaming and storing music, videos and pictures. Additional downloaded extra content for games would also be stored on the PC hard disk.

They would still sell a separate memory card for xb2, just for those who have nor Live or a connection to a PC.

I've had this vision for a long time already (I have, really  ), mobody just paid any attention when I visioned this, or everybody just laughed at me
First I thought of this for Sony and their "Cell world", but now it seems more certain that (also?) MS is going that road.

If I had to guess, I would guess what rabidrabbit just layed out. It lowers hardware cost and strongly encourages people to use more Microsoft stuff. I really don't see why MS would not be behind it, but I've given up trying to predict MS. They make no sense too often.

I dunno, this idea (or slight variations of it) have been doing the rounds for a couple of years now. It's actually very popular. Still expect to see everyone with a memory card or three though - there's too much profit potential in selling the things for MS to try and bypass them. Not to mention that the vast majority of people still won't have their Xbox 2 connected to a PC.

Memory card is a bit of a given for savegames I think, but for downloaded Live content they just won't suffice.

Well, at least I was the first person who brought that idea to my mind
(Edit: Sorry, but if I appear somewhat delusional that's because I have some bad sleep deprivation which I've been trying to cure with strong coffee  )

Microsoft does have at least one advantage over Sony next gen.
I do think if both of them are going for the server centric consept, Microsoft's effort could lekily be better thought out, and with better connectivity and functions with a PC.

I wonder if PS3 will be able to connect to a Windows PC... or will (if) it need a standalone "Cell Home Server" :? Could MS do something to prevent, or at least make it functions more basic.

Well, Macs can connect to Windows based PCs to share internet connections and stuff, so i guess it could be feasible.

Yes they can, but MS can come up with much more than simple sharing and streaming with xb2 <-> WinPC, like....... like............................................... like..................................................................... they could protect all Windows folders with drm so that you could only open them in Windows!!!!

Well obviously MS can do whatever they want to keep Sony off Windows PCs, but i personally dont' see that happening, because it would be more business for them, to have yet another product (and a successful one too) connect to Windows. Like the iPod, like any other device which is not manufactured by MS.
