Motorstorm screens

After seeing the TGS gameplay videos I am definitely not liking this game anymore. It looks slow, inert and sticky. Games journos on the show floor had lots of trouble controlling it which should probably tell you something. It just doesn't look like it's fun. The graphics look nice, yes, but that doesn't mean a damn thing if it plays like chewing gum on a bench.

Roll on Fatal Inertia or whatever.

edit: seems I have looked at videos from a "broken" build of the game. Later videos are much, much better.

Sadly, I couldn't agree more. The graphics might be better than expected again, but where did that sense of speed go? :???:

I have to agree. For me Motorstorm was certainly a disappointment. It was slow and sluggish. Nice effects, etc. but it didn't look like a race game at all.

You know the game actual can be fast. It totally depends on who is playing it.
It also somewhat depends on the vehicle you drive as obviously the performance characteristics are different.

There is a button on the controler that gives you a big speed up, like you hit the nitros or something. But it makes the heat gauge on your hud to go up and you go into flames if it gets too high.

So, without further ado I give you my (and yeah, if you've already scanned down and seen it, who'd a thunk it?) TGS 2006 Game of the Show: Motorstorm

The reason is simple: it's the best looking game in action I've ever seen running on a home console. Watching it on the screen feels like you're right there, in a helicopter or something chasing behind this off-road race. Everything moves the way it should; there's no weird seams or particle effects disconnected from their source; the lighting (and shadowing) looks natural. It creates a completely engrossing effect.

This game screams next-gen.. something most games are lacking.

Did you see the new videos? The first day the game had a small bug like thing making the game 20 fps.

But they fixed it for the second day and it was running at a locked 30 fps. You didn't see the new videos?

Exactly. Slow. 30fps is for kids! ;)

Just kidding.

I defintely like the look of the game, shame it seems to be the same look over and over again. Not that they have much room to diversify environments really, but a change would have been nice.

There will be changes though. These are not all the tracks though. I'm looking to be really surprise in December when I buy the game.

Didn't hear about that, don't know if the vids I saw (three showfloor gameplay flicks from Gamevideos/1up) are affected.

I suppose better performance would cure the issues I'm having with the game. Is there any particular video you'd recommend?
(downloading the Playsyde video now)

Okay it's cool. I'll try to find the newer/faster builds.

It's locked. What's wrong with that?

I was expecting 60fps for this one. Ok I find it acceptable sometimes to have some games at 30fps. But I didnt expect this one to be running that low. Especially for a next gen console.
It has some incredible detail but its not the kind of detail that makes you think it so much the game has to sacrifice framerate.

If the demand for 1080p games is still there (and Sony may want to try to make as many of its first party games as it can 1080p anyway)... I definitely think we'll see 1080p + 60 FPS... it just might take a few years. Especially considering that all three companies seem to be stressing that this will be a long generation in terms of console lifespan (and we can be pretty sure that is at least true of the PS3).

People seem to forget how much things like this improve as time goes on. Just take a stroll down memory lane to first and second year PS2 games... now compare them to things like GOW2 and Okami.

The game looks pretty good, but I went back and looked at the E3 target render. It's still far from it. Both in showing destructive physics (look at the house being demolished or car being damaged and flipping) as well as smoke and particle effects (look at the smoke trails in the desert of the trailer, and the smoke/fire), and in the lighting department (look at the motorcycle driver in the trailer)

I'm not dissing the game, but I really think the smoke effects in particular need improving. They concentrated on mud, which is cool, but the desert maps which look "dryer" should have tons of dust being kicked up.
