Microsoft XBOX (XBox One X / Project Scorpio) - Prerelease News and Rumours

Makes sense to bring it in line with the 5/3 split of the OG XBO. Asymmetrical OS RAM between the platforms wouldn't make sense.

This is nice though just that in the theory of if PS4/Pro/XBO dedicated every last drop of RAM to games and none to OS (which we know will never come close to happening) they still couldn't catch Scorpio.

Uhh, 3GB seems enough, way more than enough!

Also noticed another tweet seen on Neogaf from a Xbox (maybe Spencer or Greenberg) on twitter that you should expect the show to run longer than the typical 90 minutes this year.
3GB was enough for X1 @ 1080p
so i wasn't surprised Scorpio needing more for 4k and improved performance.
remember that it also runs apps (and games) in the 3GB os reserve, not just the os. Does things like dvr use any memory which can now do 4k60. Anyway....
obviously they felt they could make do, but it's not as simple as saying X1 was at 3GB so the Scorpio should also be.
i wouldn't have been surprised at re-allocating half a gig though.

I'm impressed unless it runs like crap that is.
what next, they do tv pip for Scorpio? :runaway:
they wouldn't announce it because it's not gaming

Haven't we all come to the consensus that the RAM allocated for an OS is pretty wide open to allow for multitasking without having to rely on the HD which could slow down games?

I don't think MS is using 3GB of code for the OS. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's highly unlikely.

$399 would only be feasible if Pro dropped in price as well. That was a lot of what we were banking on. The realities could be different though. Thus $450

$399 is more likely, even though $349 (assume ps4 will drop $50 so it is the cheaper, if scorpio is 449 then no need to drop price) vs $399 is a greater percentage difference than $399 vs $449. To human psychology the later seems more of a worse deal.
$349 vs $399
$399 vs $449

I'm thinking 449 scorpio would make sony stay on 399 a bit longer. So the value proposition remains reasonable. And if MS would come out at 399 it would have forced sony to drop to 349, possibly making it a loss for both companies.

Right now it's MS move, and they can always drop quickly to follow sony's eventual price drop. Unofficial price drops have been the norm this gen, previous gen was quite wreckless with major losses and they are acting much more sober now.

This gen, the BOM is dropping much slower than the ps360 launch. Not sure what price reduction could happen on the pro yet. It could be an interesting gamble?

sound reasonable to me, given the fact that they drop the price of the Xbox One S tomorrow (it drops 50$), so the 400€ price scenario seems more likely now.

While $399 would best from a marketing standpoint...I still expect $450 with Microsoft occasionally having $50 off sales and or game bundles, digital store credit...

It's what they seem to like to do with Xbox One. Its one of the reasons why I have found it hard at times to actually know what the official price of an Xbox One is.

maybe whatever the rrp is for Scorpio, when it actually releases it will be with bundled software to add value, their bundles have been pretty crazy for x1.
3-6 months game pass, 14 days gold - for the new X1 owner
shadow of war/FM7 (or some other game) - for the existing X1 owners

i don't know what the bundled deals are for 4pro, I'm just saying that ms may use bundled software to bring cost value closer to 4pro

I mean I have been reading these forums for years and know your opinion on things and where you stand. Arguing about this will result in going back and forth over something we won't eventually agree and it will be a waste of energy for both you and me. Have a nice E3.

Why? What's the target audience for Scorpio and why's that different to the target audience for 4Pro? I'd have thought they were the same, current gen gamers wanting an upgrade, although 4K disc playback does give Scorpio a bit of a USP for 4K TV owners.
The target group of Scorpio, initially, is the tech enthusiasts that like 4k and want a 4k capable machine for their 4k tvs( true 4k games and 4k movies) and early adopters, and that's actually a substantial crowd for the first few millions of sales. I have no idea what the target group of the pro is, and apparently neither does the gaming community given the pro's initial failure (480k combined in November/December 2016 npds and only one out of five PS4 sold after that) despite sony's dominance in the videogmaes' market . Oh and before somebody asks if the Scorpio does similar to PS4 pro numbers in its first few months yes I will consider it a total failure.

The target group of the Scorpio are the gamers who wants to get the best possible game experience for consoles. I wouldn't narrow this down to "tech enthusiasts". Tech Enthusiasts are the group which need to have the latest tech gimmicks, fastest CPU/GPUs they can afford, overclock their systems for the last few fps with/without water cooling.

Personally I'm not convinced the True 4K gamer amounts to a significant audience. That is, I doubt there's many people who'd turn their nose up at 4Pro's '4K' and yet jump at Scorpio for '4K' games, although it's yet to be seen how much visuals different there is. As for 'early adopters', they aren't an audience but a segment of your total product sales. 4Pro's Early Adopters are the one's who've bought it. Scorpio's Early Adopter will be those who buy it in the months after launch. After then, it's normal folk that start buying.

Whether Scorpio sells 1 million or 50 million, the Early Adopters are going to be those who buy in the first year, and the majority will those who buy after, and the laggards in its waning years. As such, there's no specific audience of Early Adopters for MS to target. Maybe you mean 'tech enthusiasts'? To me though, there's no specific market for Scorpio that sets it apart, because it's not a next-gen console. Therefore it's still going to sell to the current market as a higher-end product. Only if MS can change the message can they hope to sell to gamers seeing it as a notable upgrade. I think for that to happen, they'd need to tell these gamers that their Scorpio enhanced games will run on XBToo and be improved on that as well, softening the cost of a replacement console that'll be replaced. Such a message would be a bombshell and great for MS and XB. No such message and it's just a 4Pro equivalent, selling to a niche of high-end current-gen gamers who want a better experience between now and next-gen.

I agree. And best possible experience include other factors than just 4K resolutions and assets for a select group of games imo.
Universal Scorpio advantages as, for example, faster loading times and more stable framerates in all non-patched titles probably speaks to a larger group of people than just the gamers looking for 4K games and upgraded assets.

I've been wondering if they will say that during the reveal, after all the BC talk by both companies and media this week.
They may feel like doubling down on it.
"We value, old, current and future games, so we are making sure your library will play on our next console"
i do wonder if they want to even get into mentioning future consoles yet though.
It could be another USP, at least until Sony says they will also if they do.
I'm not going to get into the how much value does it hold discussion, it's just another USP like uhd Blu-ray support

As a stand alone sole SKU this price would be too high, but a high end part as a part of a larger lineup it's ok, not great though. I think the box is very solid. With the amount of processing power, memory/bandwith and a 4K Blu-ray playback it's definitely worth $100 over the Pro in my eyes. The games shown didn't blow me away, but I think the future games are going to be great on this system. I'm not in a rush to buy this, but I can definitely see myself getting back to owning an Xbox now. $399 next year.

Happy to see Witcher 3 getting a patch also.
