I have hesitated on posting this... please no trolling.

Anyhow, TGS has passed and no sign still. Supposedly it was deep into development in Spring 2005 and it is nearly a year and a half later and the PS3 launch is in less than 2 months. KZ was probably the biggest story at E3 2005 and was a surprise no show this year.

Any hints? Is Sony going to show it off before the PS3 launches or is this a "wait and see if it materializes" title?

Nah, no need to flame or troll, its a pretty understandable question. Everybody is wondering where it is really, and how it will look.

Supposedly it will surface early next year. The team/Sony is fully focused on only marketing Killzone Liberation and PS3 Launch titles at the moment.

From a TGS chat transcript:
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=tgs2006&message.id=410
swift.death.: What about killzone! Is it going to be there
SONY Inside Guy: Killzone wasn't there - you'll see some more info in early next year - it's still ways out

...
SONY Inside Guy: You probably won't see anything for Killzone PS3 until early next year as all the hype is geared on launch titles right now

...
SONY Inside Guy: yeah, we're doing a big midnight event at Metreon, so if you're in San Francisco, that will be the place to be
SONY Inside Guy: not sure about the number of units that Metreon will get, though when we launched PS2, we had enough for everyone that showed up and that was over 500

DISCLAIMER: This is an opinion, not facts.

Personally, I think they been caught in their own hype. The pre-rendered Killzone E3 2005 footage was so darn impressive that it caught everyone's attention. There was a huge build up of expectation afterwards.

Now, if they show an unfinished and unpolished version, there'll be a huge backlash. Just look at what happened with Lair, a lot of people were disappointed by TGS demo (including me). I'd guess the KZ backlash would be ten times worse: A lot of Nelson "haha"s and "it still looks nice" thrown around.

They're probably going to release some footage when KZ compares very favourably to the current next-gen titles on PS3 and X360. Until then nothing will be shown. I'd guess that KZ might be a 2008 title. But you never know.

I beleive it's plausible that they could be trying to avoid diverting attention from the launch titles, but... well, not really.

I'm thinking E3 2007.
If the game looks half as good as the target render, it will look good.

Question is, will it be just an average shooter like the first game?

Well I think its a bit of both. Obviously they are not going to show it if its not ready to be shown, but they also dont want to divert attention. As hupfinsgack said, we will probably see it when its looking like a polished title. And not any earlier. That said, I'm hearing many rumors they are throwing millions at this game to get it looking as close to the e3 2005 trailer as possible (which wouldnt be a surprise).

I have my doubts it will match the trailer, but I wouldnt expect it to look like ass either... whenever it's finally shown. So of course there will be the ones screaming 'downgrade, sony am cry' and the like, but I wouldnt expect it to look anything less than amazing compared to other next gen titles.

I think there's a completely different story here, apart from the obvious (i.e. they'll wait until they've got something nice to show). Guerilla is originally a very small developer, much more suited to Killzone PS2 and the new PSP version than anything else. Right now they're finalising the PSP version, and the capacity to do a big PS3 project besides that is very limited. They will have started working on the PS3 version at the earliest say half a year before E3 2005, with at most the same amount of people that worked on the PS2 version.

Now, a while ago (as in somewhere Spring 2006), Sony infused a lot of money into the team, and they were allowed to recruit no less than 40 new people. Initially they tried to fill those in the Netherlands, but really, there aren't that many top coders around here - the gaming industry is still very young, and consists for a large part of Guerilla at that (which had fused together 2-3 other projects, among which Lost Boys). So that turned out to be a big problem, and they've had to look for talent abroad, willing to move to Amsterdam to work there.

So, my guess about how far along they are with the project is as good as any, but I don't think we'll see a game released before Christmas 2007, and they will be hard-pressed to show something decent by summer 2007.

The one factor I can't decide on how well it's going to contribute though, is Sony's new development setup, where they share development resources, code and what-not among all there SCE groups and regions. Guerilla should benefit from this and the state of current projects should allow them to catch up.

I personally think it might not be such a bad idea to licence the Resistance engine from Insomniac, and just focus on creating really great art for that, and let their techiest guys work on either hot tools, or further improving that already excellent engine.

Doesnt Guerilla have about 120+ developers working for them?
If true I would assume a large amount of them have been working on the ps3, while the others finish up and polish the psp game (that looks awesome I might add ).

If they were ever serious about trying to get the KZ footage as a game, they won't be licensing any engines! It'll need ground up design and implementation IMO.

it IS a public secret Killzone ps3 is still a long way off and currently (speaking about months ago) was too emberassing to show off.

Info and screens are always strategicly released .

I wouldn't say always, unless some companies have a very wierd strategy! We've all seen pics from games early in development that look plain manky and turned people off!

I don't think Killzone PS3 was "deep in development" in Spring 2005. They probably had a small number of people starting work on it then, but they were still fleshing out the team in a big way at the end of 2005.

As for why you haven't seen it at E3 and TGS, there's two answers: Resistance: Fall of Man, and Killzone: Liberation. I wouldn't expect to hear anything more about it until at least after the launch, if not next year.

Doing a little research, as of June 06, they had around 70+ people working on Killzone for the ps3. And I'm assuming the rest of the team was working on the psp version. Now that the launch of Killzone Liberation is getting closer, I'm sure they have people moving over to the ps3 project.

The biggest problem is that the very nature of a GC movie is to present heavily directed and intensified action. Reproducing something like that in a game, interactively, will be very, very difficult and requires all game systems to be almost fully completed.

They could release screenshots though, but I also think that the engine, and especially the tool/pipeline development is not advanced enough at this point. They have to invent a next-gen engine from the gruond up, making sure that it will also run at a good speed with HDR and shaders and all that stuff.
Looking at the Halo3 HDR presentation it's obvious that Bungie also had to spend a lot of R&D just to decide how they're going to implement it, nothing was evident at all (turned out that it's a lot more complicated then just rendering to FP10).

they should fire their strategic manager , or at least hire one :)
