Massively underwhelming Perfect Dark 0 screens (360)

This kinda stinks I remember seeing screens of soul caliber and NFL2K and almost wetting myself. I really hope that the E3 showing will be much much better.

Are you kidding? Those look great... for a PS2 game.

I saw the MTV show just a few minutes ago. Some of the games looked good, maybe half looked bad. Perfect Dark Zero was probably the worst looking game they showed.

Underwhelming is a compliment. They look like a N64 to Xbox port. The models are horrendous, the rendering is grainy, the geometry is bland, the textures are very low quality on the people, no shadows less the last pic, reptitive tile ground which looks to be used even on the walls.

This is just bad screenshots. And 64 players is not a good excuse... BF uses 64 players and has better graphics. Same with JO. I really hope this is a joke...

I don't know what you guys are thinking but that is some nice screenshots. It blows every pre-rendered images I have ever seen out of the water. RARE has really impressed me this time, honest. Thats honest with a capital WTF!?!

Heh . Watching the game play in motion and it looks as good has half life 2 and has 50 player death match .

Once again we are still about 5 months from launch . These are by no means finished games and many are running on engines made for the xbox .

Or are you all forgeting the ps2 launch where the games looked horrible .

Finished or not theses games should blow anything else out there away. I'll still get an xbox 360 but I am not 1/10 as excited as I was for the dreamcast launch. I hope at E3 there is 1 game like soul caliber or NFL2k a game that floors me and gets me thinking about the launch every day.

I agree. I'm surprised at MS for letting people play a game that was obviously not finished. The fluidity of the game in deathmatch was definitely a welcome sight. But the graphics themselves left much to be desired. Then again, considering the low quality graphics, for a next-gen console that is, it's not surprising that it was rather smooth.

Heh . Why ? Why would a console that doesn't even have finished hardware blow consoles that have had billions of dollars of development time poured into them to get them even a fraction of a % better performance ?

I've been saying for a very long time (Though no one listens ) that first gen games allways only look slightly better than last gen games . This time not only is it a whole new box with unfinished hardware but it also had a bump up in the res and a higher level of fsaa .

People expect to much and they are going to be under whelmed for each launch

I do not have MTV (or a TV) so I cannot say how it looked in motion. But looking at the pics I can see the art direction is, well... hmmm. Anyhow, 5 months is not going to fix the character models. Notice the guy on the right. That is not a very good model. I think it is relared to their bone system, which has far too wide of hips. Joanas face reall seems to be lacking any special detail (which you would expect from the lead character AND in a system with 512MB of memory). Her model looks blocky and the textures look poor. Notice the patch and the front of her jumper. Also the background behind here is just tiled--very boring. Same thing here in number 4. Lots of tiled textures. The vehicle looks cool, and the particle effect is nice, but the world seems very low quality. Solid/repetitive textures. The GR3 pics did not look like this, neither do HL2 pics or BF2. CS:S supports 64 players and the levels are much more detailed also.

It may look a LOT better in motion, but my problem is the textures and models do not look very high quality. And it is not one texture or one model, but all 4 seem to have this problem.

Of course this is just my opinion, but if you put those screenshots up next to a PC game like FarCry, HL2, BF2, Call of Duty 2--in every case the textures and models look better.

Or are you all forgeting the ps2 launch where the games looked horrible .

And I did not buy a PS2 either ;) Sony was the market leader, they could afford to slip some based on promise and trailers of coming games (like GT3). Xbox is trying to gain mindshare, and marketshare, from the market leader. I have a hard time believing pics like that will accomplish that.

Hmm soul calibure and NFL2k completely destroyed anything else out there. Almost every dreamcast launch game made PS1 games look pathetic.

PD is supposed to be a killer app it should look much much better than 2+ year old PC games.

They weren't launch titles .

First off nfl2k came out in 2000. The dreamcast came out in 1998 in japan . Those were the launch titles .

Look at the ps2 launch titles in japan .

Remember for both launches there was another 6 to 8 months after the launch to work on titles and for western devs to finish production .

Sorry, but for a console launch, there should be atleast one *killer* tech demo showing off the graphics. Launch titles for PS2 did not look worse than the best PS1 titles.

Of course, over time, developers learn how to take advantage of a console's HW better, but look at the titles MS was demoing for X-Box's previous launch:
Halo, Amped, PGR, and they were showing videos of DoA3, and other good looking titles. (some that didn't make it like
Remember Malice on X-Box? ) The E3 X-Box, PS2, and GC launches were lightyears better.

Both Sega and Sony were demoing facial animation demos, we had the awesome Shen Mue, we had "Emotion Engine" demos, and sequences from FF8 that were once CGI pre-rendered running in real time.

The DC, PS2, GameCube, and X-Box 1 launches were way better. Hell, Nintendo's usage of pre-rendered games (including the awesome looking realistic Zelda which didn't make it) generated lots of excitement, even tho were knew those Zelda, Star Fox, and Metroid videos were CGI.

These X-Box 360 launch titles look terrible IMHO. PDZ looks like a title that will run fine on a Radeon 9700 and 2.4Ghz AMD. Battlefield 2 *BLOWS* it out of the water. Couldn't MS get someone to show the GDC UE3 demos on XB360?

No amount of excuses is going to convince anyone that this launch was anything but a massive disappointment compared to previous console launches.

Because it has 1. 8x as much memory 2. CPUs and a graphics chip that are each 10x as powerful 3. This was an unveiling meant to impress people and they should have showed their best stuff.

I've been saying for a very long time (Though no one listens ) that first gen games allways only look slightly better than last gen games .

A flagship title should look great. Halo looked great at launch compared to anything on the PS and N64. Luigies Mansion was significantly better than Mario 64. Cleaner, more detailed textures, better animation, etc...

Even more important is that consoles have whipped PCs when they were released. This system is supposed to have a CPU that dwarfs a P4/AMD64 by 4x in FP performance and a GPU that is 4x as powerful in PS and 10x more powerful in VS than an X800. It is a closed box with 512MB of FAST memory. I did not expect a lot (I have thought MOST Xbox 360 stuff looked very good), PDZ does not imo.

This time not only is it a whole new box with unfinished hardware but it also had a bump up in the res and a higher level of fsaa .

The Xbox/PS2/GCN moved from 320x240 as standard with the first 3D gen to 480i/p standard this gen. So they had a bump. Btw, if this is released in early November they only have 5 months before Gold to finish HW (it is done) and to get the games done. 5 months usually means content and features are locked down usually and they are fixing bugs and balancing the games.

People expect to much and they are going to be under whelmed for each launch

Maybe some, but my response to stuff I have seen has been positive. I thought the 99 Nights pic looked very good for example. The GR3 pics looks outstanding.

I guess I was personally expecting PDZ to look better; better as in not something that can be done on the Xbox. Regardless if they are using 5k models, they do not look that detailed. Halo 2 gives the pics a run for their money imo. And it definately does not stand up against a PC shooter from the last year (CoD, HL2, FarCry).

While you may disagree, a flag ship Mascot title, a title in work for a long time, a title meant to impress and make people buy a system, should impress. I am impressed by a LOT of the Xbox 360 titles so far--but not PDZ. So I do not believe it is an expectations problem.

Well, reserve your judgement until it HAS launched. They did not show a lot of games, yet they expect 40ish titles by the end of the year. That is a lot... and there are bound to be gems. GR3 looks really good for example. I would not bash the entire console from a 30min MTV add.

You never know... maybe they were reserving their big guns for E3 as a surprise? Odder things have happened at E3

was the ps2 rendering at a higher res and with fsaa ?

Aside from that none of these games shown look worse than the best of the current crop of console games .

if you like tech demos which we never seen in game then yea i will agree .

Both Sega and Sony were demoing facial animation demos, we had the awesome Shen Mue, we had "Emotion Engine" demos, and sequences from FF8 that were once CGI pre-rendered running in real time

The only game in there was shen mue and that was being developed for years on the saturn and was the first game to switch over to dreamcast kits .

Even as natoma mentioned to me (mario 64 ) was a game that was developed for years and actually had the system specs changed to suit the game better

The DC, PS2, GameCube, and X-Box 1 launches were way better. Hell, Nintendo's usage of pre-rendered games (including the awesome looking realistic Zelda which didn't make it) generated lots of excitement, even tho were knew those Zelda, Star Fox, and Metroid videos were CGI.
and none of those graphics came to be

So you want a console maker to lie to you ?

No amount of excuses is going to convince anyone that this launch was anything but a massive disappointment compared to previous console launches.

Right , so if sony shows you cgi and tells you that this is what you will get in a game and then 5 years later launches another console with out ever fufulling thier promise on the previous one that would be a good launch ?
