Now that was rather unexpected...

I never expected Blair would come out of this week's mess (TOTAL mess) the way he did.
Blair really seems to have 9 lives, and i "like" him more and more every day... As much as you can like someone who just decided to charge 3 grand a year on top of you university fees, that is...

(If some of you do not know what i'm talking about, then i will post explanations later on, or maybe someone else can...)

Well, labour party wants rather to have a Labour prime minister than sticking to their original party agenda.
But where's the alternative to Blair? Tories? Ugh...

I was trying to keep this thread serious........

 Who am i kidding

No, really, Mr Blair is growing on me, he went from "liar" to "victim" overnight. We still have to see why exactly we went to war, and that's gonna be interesting. but i guess, as long as he hold onto the "wrong" reports of which Dr Kelly was responsible, then Blair himself will be safe. Now that we know what Dr Kelly said, and we know that Mr Blair and his government wasn't lying, i think it will be an easy ride for them.

I wonder where the Tories get their crack from. Sometimes they just leave me  . I mean, Howard (or whatever their leader's name is now) was still accusing Blair of lying, straight after the Hutton report was read to him!

Good thing that in this country we have people who actually question the Government though (talking about the Hutton inquiry), it can only be a good thing.

Well, I am talking here from a European point of view. But concerning EU and British policies towards EU I am very happy to have Blair in power in Britain. The Tories would be a major disaster at this very crucial time (constitution, military apparatus, etc.).

You know the Tories have the same problem as the Socialdemocrats in Austria, whatever they do whatever they say, the first things that pops up in my head is a Blink 182 song ("Some guys [or was it girls] try to hard..."). They're so madly focused on throwing Blair out of Downing Street that they have an absolutely inconsistent agenda. One day they say this; a new day, a new opinion poll, they say that. That really makes them look very ridiculous. The voters demand at least some credibility and stability.

And let's not forget Blair's rhetoric abilities...

Credibility and utter stupidity on Tories part is the reason even the LibDem are now getting a big chunk of the Tories voters...

I haven't been following British internal politcs that closely, but I suppose liberal in the economic sense.

What did the latest opinion polls show?

Depends which ones you mean. In the last 4 years the LibDems (Britain so-far-3rd party, not getting bigger and bigger at Tories' expenses) have been gaining seats that were previously held by either Labour or Tories, Labour have been gaining seats that were held by Tories, so it ends up like this: Labour not much of a change, Tories are f**ked and the LibDems getting bigger every year.

The problem with the LibDems is that they are still seen as an irrelevance. They may do well in council elections and opinion polls but when a general election comes around, people think their vote will be wasted if it goes to the LibDems.

I was at home yesterday early afternoon and saw Blair and Howard (shudder) make their speeches live on BBC 1 (TV channel). As Kennedy (leader of the LibDems) stood up to make his response, the TV coverage cut away to a discussion in the studio with various pro-Tory and pro-Labour flunkies discussing what had been said. Whatever Kennedy had to say was seen as an irrelevance despite the LibDems holding a reasonable chunk of the parliamentary seats!

I must say that although Tony Blair gets on my nerves somewhat, Michael Howard makes my skin crawl - he's the most slimy politician in the country, which is saying something! The main problem to me is that the majority of senior politicians tend to have come from the legal profession and everyone knows you can't trust lawyers! :p

Personally, and i hate to admit it, i do not think there would be anyone in the country who could do a better job at being a PM than Blair does. And that's saying something.

Gordon Brown?

He's considered the power behind the throne, so to speak.

Yeah but Blair is the face, the voice, i mean i actually enjoy listening to him sometimes.... Brown might be the "power" (depending on who's to believe here, not like we actually know anything of what they really do) but thank god he's not PM, he would be laughed at by everyone...

Politics is a DIRTY game.

It's got so dirty I doubt anyone would notice if the Mafia took over. They lie & cheat openly because they know there's nothing the public can do about it.
I really wouldn't be suprised if Hutton has a new bank account somewhere with rainy day money (and it rains alot in UK).

The problem is that it's rotten all the way down the chain, ie.. WHY does Fujitsu have a 25 yr contract to maintain ALL the computer hardware in the civil service or why does Mapley have a 25 yr contract to look after CC buildings, or why is the Surrey Council unable to pay for a pensioner's flat roof thats colapsed but able to buy a 60" Plasma @ £12,000 for their training room.

.... and thats just a few titbits I know about......

I was thinking the same thing: How do we know Lord Hutton was completely objective? How do we know he didn't get millions and millions by the government in order for them to "look like the good boys"... Then the ingenuous naive innocent part of me just goes "NAH CAN'T BE..."

We'll never know...

Yeah, obviously his job was "Finding out who got the name leaked". Anything else is not his jurisdiction...

Anyone noticed how Lord Hutton will probably retire straight after this inquiry? o_O

I think British judges are usually accused of incompetence rather than corruption!

All the hoo-har which led to this Hutton report was due to shoddy journalism by Gilligan from what I've seen. The fact that the BBC stood behind him so solidly seems strange when you look at the lack of evidence he had for his strong claims against the government. I remember hearing when Gilligan first accused Blair & Co of lying and thinking that they'd better be able to back up the accusation. It all rather blew up their faces when Dr. Kelly topped himself though.

Isn't Gilligan still employed by the BBC as well, even though their Chairman has resigned over the whole affair?

Gilligan is still very much employed, although i'm not sure how long he will have a job for.... The Chairman did resign too, didn't take long, must have LOVED that position :|
