Leipzig confrence

more like 6-8 months. Wonna bet on a price-drop ?

December for japanese xbox 360 vs march for ps3 ps3 is 5 months .

I don't expect a price cut . Will make the brand look weak .

Features - right and I dont care for standard features, ill get one eventually when I see the need for it.
Games - would make job easier for devs, but wont have any significant limits IMHO. Nextgen games will hopefully use procedurally generated Geometry & Textures, the biggest limit is available System RAM. And adding RAM is something any Game will benefit from - it would show even in first-gen Titles.

You don't care for standard features , many others do . Yes it will make things easier for devs and speed up loading . Next gen will barely use any procedural textures as it will be way to cpu intesnive .

Adding ram will be expensive. It increaseses pcb cost and of course increases the ram cost
and changes the cooling abilitys of the case

sigificant benefit of XDR-Ram is that it uses relatively few lanes and aint sensible to layout - should be hard to add 2 chips of those. If future bigger Mem-Chips will be available, so they could be back to 2 Chips after a few revisions. They also will fall in cost faster than a HD.

U add xdr ram and its more expensive than the same amount of gdr ram. It will also have latancys when being acessed by the gpu. But anyway u have ram cost + pcb cost . Not exactly cheap and once again will add much more heat .

IN the future costs may scale down yes. But that is the future and sony will still have to suffer through looses to get to that point .

Hardrives will fall slower . However you can sell bigger hardrives after marktet for upgrades and make moeny and then for marketing and sales boosts you can replace the hardrive who's costs have stalled and have remained static with a hardrive that is still falling in price .

I.e if a 20 gig hardrive in 2 years hits rock bottom pricing at 10$ and wont ever move the 40 gig wont be to far behind it (if not the same price) and thus u can market the system with an upgraded hardrive and not need to drop your price and make more money that way .

U simply don't just drop in more ram. Its not a pc and I hghly doubt sony wants to go higher than 500$ for the system in costs . Esp not when they don't need to

Is Sony showing anything today? I believe they have a conference now, but I have not scene any news coming out.

Regards the RAM I think Npl is thinking of the recent rumours that the PS3 RAM received a boost of some sort. Though improbable and costly, it's rumoured in much the same way a two-tier, HDD-less entry level XB360 has been rumoured for a whle but people like me were unwilling to believe

I dont believe it to happen, only hypothetically speaking if I got to add components to the PS3 I would choose Memory and leave a HDD optional. As long you could plug any off-the-shelf HDD in there and dont have to buy it for ridicolous prices, I would actually prefer NO required HDD.

I dont think PS3 will be higher than 400$ in US/Jap, ( could be still as high as 500$ for us screwed bastard childs in europe ).

Hopefully Sony will follow suit with MS and offer a fair price for the PS3 (as far as giving an equal price of Euros compared to the Dollar)

Sony is about to launch the PSP in europe, so imo its doubtful that we will see a lot PS3 stuff

the hdd would be cheaper. You don't have to redesign and tap out new chips to support the new ram and to change pcbs and cases . U just put the hardrive in the slot u already made for it .

Anyway for sony to intrest me they need to put a hardrive in at 400$ for a bundle. Bluray and hd-dvd doesn't impress me much. Only title i want is evil dead. The hdd on the other hand i will use alot for online content .

So it may still for me come down to a 400$ xbox 360 with hdd of a 500$ ps3 with hdd .
