IMO the only really ugly thing I can see with this game are the particles for the explosions and the logic thereof..

Why would a giant flesh-and-boned-manta explode into giblets after you hit it with a couple of fireballs..?

Why would a huge manta fly!? Because it's full of helium (funny) - helium is quite flamable...

If memory serves, helium is the one after hydrogen in the table and being a noble gas not flameable.

Hyrogen is lighter anyway, better for both flying and explosions. :)

Yep. Deepbrown's very wrong - helium is only flammable in solar fission/fusion explosions. Plus if the critters were filled with helium they'd make silly high-pitched squeeks instead of roars ;)

Hahaha! FUnny. I'm a dumbass. Julian always says helium...hmmm dang it! High-pitched squeeks would be cool

Starships are relatively low-poly and don't animate...

Low poly is totally wrong, bricks and X-wing (the old game) level geometry won't cut it nowadays. You can spend a LOT of geometry on all the small greeble stuff. Just look at a real life VFX maquette, it's full of kitbashed detail.

And animations... well, it's not skinned for sure, but moving turrets and such are also quite standard today.

Nice water tho

The water is terrible, too, especially in some far shots where you can see how the foam textured polys are arranged on an ordered grid... blocky blocky. And the waves are unrealistically big and regular, too.

And really is this game so big? My impression is a few cities and vast landscapes filled of randomly generated mountains and water. Its not like they spend a lot of money designing these mountains.

QFT

I'd also add that armies seem to just stand around and wait for the player, and there's nothing really interesting happening in the world beyond that. F5 talks about an open world and simulations but there really isn't anything else but the mission objectives... at least so far it looks like that. Yeah, you can fly around and engage in a few battle zones but that's all; no wildlife, forests or anything...

Having Helium doesn't necessarily lead to high pitched squeaks either

It's just happens that the properties of helium gas produces higher pitched sounds than normal air... given that other variables remain constant.
But if the sound is really low pitched to begin with, having not-as-low-as-before low pitched bellows is still possible.

Just my 2 cents

It happens that parts of armies do stand around and tend not to completely engage themselves in battle...
especially when there's not a lot of open ground ;)

You must've forgotton about the whole global warming issue.
As with the massive amounts of dragons flying around torching forests and eating up whatever they can for their health bars

Subjective. R&C looks butt ugly to me.

Wow. Of all the head scratching statements I've heard, this takes the cake. R&C is undeniably gorgeous.

All the debates/excuses about LAIR's mediocre graphic aside, the gameplay still looks like garbage.

Excuses and garbage gameplay ? :) The previews don't sound too bad so far.

I'd trust people who played the alpha (more so than folks who just saw the videos and images). Larger dragons are immune to fire, so I guess there'd be more wet works involved in later levels.

Seriously, the experience of flying through these stunning, expansive landscapes with tons going on all around you and a fantastic orchestral score playing underneath is really quite something. You've simply not experienced anything like this before -- certainly not on this scale. The lighting and weather effects (lightning and rain were specifically impressive), the draw distance (you can see for miles and miles), the amount of on screen action at times (tons of other dragons flying through the air, ships in the sea, and warriors on the ground), and the ability to simply and seamlessly switch between fighting high in the sky and down on the ground -- this is absolutely a next generation experience.

Who would Xbots have any reason to be angry right now?

Most of em would probably be sitting back and laughing...

Here I thought they would be playing Halo 3 Beta instead.
Seriously though, calling people xbots/idiots/fools is not cool, however biased they may be.
Those name callings seem accelerated recently. I wonder why.

Whoever they are, whether they are laughing or crying... Lair deserves a closer look in my book.

Indeed...

that's EXACTLY what i thought! they would even bring down somfin like a cg movie if it's on PS3 only. anyway, i c no reason to trash the game before it's release, im sure the final version would adress some of the issues.

A 1080p display will probably contribute to better draw distance just like HD movies.

Yeah but the AI is still in wait mode when the player is a distance away from the soldiers. This can be seen in some videos (bridge fight) and how the AI soldiers goes from standing all still in formation to starting to move and fight.
Really nothing strange though, they have to simply AI calculations and update time for distant characters if they are going to have large amounts of AI driven characters.
