Cant be correct because it just doesnt add up. This guy must be a real douche to post this in his blog.

It can be 'incorrect,' yet at the same time still correct from the context of his own experience.

PS - The problem with this thread is that it's turning into one of those cross-system visual debate threads (when two of the systems have yet to be released), or one of those threads where the credibility of the messenger is debated more than the message itself. And those threads all suck.

That's why sticking to the technology and business strategy threads is where it's at! ;)

So this guy works for Sony, and thus can conclude the people he talked to about the technical aspects are programmers of the PS3, and not the Xbox 360, but then they all claim the Xbox 360 is much better? The "better" he is stating, is clearly in reference to the power of the system, and I cannot accept that with the current facts known about the respective architectures. Claiming better, without providing reasons as to why it is better, is questionable.

When was this written? He writes: "I mean I was at e3 2005 and PS3 was almost no where to be seen." So this was written almost a year ago?

If you search Google on - Josh Robinson Sony -, you can look at the Google cached page entitled: "PlanetSide - Community - Team Profiles". The direct link does not work, as the page no longer exists. Planetside is a PC game, so if this person got his comments on which system is better from them, means he is is talking to PC programmers who of course like Carmack of Id don't like a processor like CELL, which requires more work to get results from. They are used to a PC programming environment, most likely using Microsoft's programming tools.

Another case of lazy PC programmers?

I'm more concerned about his talking about his own product than what he says about the rest of the PS3 (as his view there would be far more accurate and within context). I was kind of interested in the SOE MMO for PS3, but now? (hopefully this isn't the DC one thats supposed to be for PSP/PS3/PC and instead something else that I'm not really interested in seeing)

If he is a PC dev and the programmers he talked to are PC devs they probably think the Xbox 360 is better because it is easier to program for just like John Carmak. Isn't it reasonable to think that.

I was starting to wonder if this was the same guy as the guy at Guerrilla Games who seems to be almost gushing over the quality of the new Killzone game for the PS3. One guys screen name is ferret and the other is ferret7. Anyway they are not the same. Josh Robinson is a mere graphics artist and has very little knowledge regarding game development while ferret7 appears to be a full fledged game developer/programmer.

Questions I have in regards to Josh Robinson (aka ferret, the graphics artist) are:

1) What sort of Sony affiliate would he work with where he would be in close quarters with X360 developers?

2) Is the disparity between the two systems based on the final X360 and a PS3 dev kit? And

3) Could he be more specific than
“The XBOX 360 is better”. They are saying that it is capable of just doing more.
Capable of doing more of what?

Well, MMO's for me are more about gameplay and plot than graphics, so I'm still interested. LOL, granted this guy's not the best endorsement SOE could put forward. ;) But I get the feelign he's just a cog in the machine kind of thing. He gets told what art to produce, and then he produces it. It seems that he's not impressed with the polygons going into it, but hey whatever. I think he's kind of insulated from the 'big picture' of it all.

I talk down my company frequently enough, so I understand at least where he might not feel this overriding sense of loyalty some may think he should. His comments probably won't prove popular back at work if/when they find out, but I mean if he really didn't break the NDA, I'm just expecting slap on the wrist type stuff.

Why? Is it so unreasonable to think the 360 coupld possibly be more powerful? I'm not saying it's so, but what would be most 'reasonable' is to take his comments at face value 'it can just do more' instead of trying to find excuses as to why his opinion is not valid.

As for being a PC dev, his team has presumably been working on a PS3 title before E3 2005 right? So that's quit some time...

as for the NDA:
"I'm very aware of the NDA and I have not broken it or mentioned anything that is not public knowledge already. I have not leaked any technology, i have not shown the box, i have not shown any art or even mentioned the title. I did give some opinions however. that does not break NDA."

Also I'd like to add that there's several months distance between the original post ROG27 layed out here and the one I quoted near the beginning of the thread, so take the passage of time and the change in tone into account.

Don't we usually call this FUD? ;)

For what it's worth, according to the comments section, this article was written on or before November the 24th 2005. Why it has only recently emerged from the dark recesses of the internet I have no idea. Probably because it was reported by the Boston Metro.

Too funny, considering the countless posts on this forum debating that very point. If you want to believe the 360 is more powerful, than good for you.

Let's analyze the relevent portion of the original post of his, dated November 24th 2005 (thanks Mmmkay!):

...To hear people talk, you’d thing that a processor revolution was about to happen. So I’ve been pretty excited to say the least. Now in my opinion it doesn’t matter how good the PS3 is. If the XBOX 360 is better, then it doesn’t really matter how the cell processors work or how good they say it is. Realistically one of them will be better over all. Now I’ve spoken with people who are on the technical side of the PS3. I’ve also talked with people on the technical side of the XBOX 360. The consistent comment I am hearing from people on my end is, “The XBOX 360 is betterâ€. They are saying that it is capable of just doing more. (shrugs) Now take that for what its worth. If you watch all the videos on the PS3 they will say how much more powerful it is than the XBOX and vice versa. Im just telling you what I am hearing. They proceeded to go into a lot of technical info that I don’t understand. So I just nod...

Ok - this is what I'm deriving. He is an artist, and his technical knowledge I'm going to place at the halfway point in terms of what we're used to in daily conversations just in this forum. He readily admits as much. That being said, he's talked to a lot of people and they prefer the 360 to the PS3, either for ease of development, or power, or both. Now - we know a lot of his 'crew' are going to be PC devs from teh West, but that doesn't invalidate what those people told him. It doesn't mean they're right or wrong either.

So, whatever... let's just hope this guy is a good artist, because from him that's really all we should care about. I don't think he's actively trying to spread FUD or anything - I mean what, this came from his blog originally? Everyone's allowed the right to an opinion. I don't see this guy travelling the net to impose his beliefs upon others, so I feel sorry for him that suddenly he's become a lightning rod for all this.

No there is no problem with this thread. Everybody is calling this man out for his mistakes. Even you have pointed the mistakes out. I think this thread is actually pretty good.

" What most developers are doing are just making a PC game. Then when they get the final system they'll put it on the ps3. "

So they haven't even started programming for the PS3 yet but the Xbox 360 is better? The guy sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Yes I have. But... why does he *need* to be called out?

Oh really? ;)

The man said what the man said. It doesn't really need much analysis. Just take it for what you will.

Because much of what he is saying is inconsistent with what we've seen for ourselves, to date, and what we've heard from other devs. When you see an inconsistency, or something which you believe not to be true, do you not call that out?

It could be very easily argued that those "opinions" (many of those were not opinions, and were stated more as facts the way he said them) were gained only from information that is based on the NDA, thus they would likely be covered in the NDA. It doesn't make a lot of sense, saying things and claiming them as an opinion doesn't magically get you off the hook. You can't form an opinion (a valid one like hes claiming) about something you shouldn't have any idea about (in theory under these types of NDAs your supposed to act that way, to some extent -- of course I don't know exactly what NDA he signed, but it's likely that type of situation)

I don't doubt he's the real guy, I just wonder about a few things. His "opinion" seems mostly valid, if not a bit skewed. Theres some weird things about what he said, but a lot of that gets cleared up in his later response (thanks xbd; I was wondering why there seemed to be a rather large difference in his tone).
