Image Quality and Framebuffer Speculations for WIP/alpha/beta/E3 games *Read the first post*

previous R&C episodes was 960x720 (with little black border on top and bottom) with 2x MSAA and a complex proprietary merge method of 960x704x2 MSAA samples into a 1280x720 framebuffer with smooth result

That's interesting, I think I saw in their official document specifically stating that its res is 1280 x 704. I wonder if R2 is running at the same res since it's built out of the same R&C engine with the same black borders

no, resistance is 1280x704. R&C compromise is probably for 60fps but it's more than just an upscale, they merge 1.8 millions MSAA samples in a 1280x704 framebuffer with a judicious pattern, it's better than an upscale.

Here's a capture from the recent Ratchet&Clank: A Crack In Time "Clank" 720p trailer. There's a fairly obvious mix of two different quality levels in that trailer, one is probably offline cut-scenes (high-quality motion blur, very crisp even in the 1080p video version) and another, lower quality level. The capture is from the latter. I can make more if necessary, but I can already say that it's hard to find decent near-vertical edges. This is already one of the best scenes for that.

Does anyone want to determine the resolution for that image?

seem the same method that previous episodes

Why insomniac said is 1280x704 in their report? Just to understand...:???:

News shoots from Mass Effect 2 on gamersyde.com.

From a quick look don't seem a high res to 720p.
You can see 2MSAA, I think?

It's 1600x900 downsample. They've actually been doing it for quite some time now that I've looked back at some shots from Mass Effect 1. It's a really weird "bull-shot" method they've chosen. :s

See image:
(15steps per 12 pixels)*720pixels -> 900 (last time I flipped the numbers for that silly 576 number :oops: )
The horizontal res has the same ratio.

Resistance 2 doesn't have a bars on the top and bottom (using Just Scan mode on my Samsung LCD, which is 1:1 pixel mode) but the first R&C does. Whatever method Insomniac uses, I wish they (or all developers for that matter) would fit it to a full window instead, especially now that I'm getting a Plasma for my next TV (I know, image retention is rare these days, but I still worry).

maybe you can zoom in a little bit?

Not sure how the TV I'm planning on purchasing handles 1:1 pixel mode, but my LCD won't allow you to zoom in in Just Scan mode, and I would much rather have it so I didn't have to switch from 16:9 to Just Scan just for the few games that do have borders/black bars. Or at least include the ability to zoom the picture in the in-game settings.

I remember they said the same resolution in the first R&C, really, but unfortunately I haven't a link

personally i prefer that everybody think like you because i like insomniac and their work, it's not in my interest to convaince. but i know the truth, it's sufficient for me :)

Yes, don't count the steps, but don't realese also their "PR" (bull)shoot was base on a 1600*900… it's not a very "good" resolution for "PR".
It's more close to 720p than others but in this case, why not directly use 720p?
So with a quick look is seem more close to 720p than all the others "PR"shoots…
May be it's the goal, and I'm fall in!!;)

There's a pretty ridiculous blur there, but I'm getting 585 for the height... Need to recheck later when I get more time.

i think yes for PS3 with 2xAA but seem 720 or 768 no AA for X360? (maybe arcade version?)

screenshots isn't good because downscaled in 688 and game not 720p, dual blury rescale...

Yeah, I was checking the PS3 shot since there are so few "good" edges here. Guess we'll have to wait for better shots. :(

Problem with this game may also be the motion blur it has?
