Halo 4

I wasn't convinced with 343 at first (especially given the spotty quality of Halo Anniversary, but Saber made it.. With their supervision).

But after reading about the talent they've pooled and this trailer.. I'm actually excited again for a Halo title.

Wonder if they'll let you customize armour in SP... And what they'll do for co-op (different characters ala H3 or... clones)

Yeah, it's been almost five years since the guy went to sleep, and as much as I liked the different directions Bungie explored in ODST and Reach, it's time to get the real hero of the series back.

Customize the Chief? Why would you want to do that? They're finally talking about exploring the character, and yet you want another nameless, silent Noble 6? ;)

Well it could turn out to be the case, as we don't know much about the Chief...

As for coop, I guess the two guys behind him are Spartan IV soldiers, so maybe you'll play as one of them....

One of them is also on the Warthog gun here

Edit: according to various Halo info sources, Chief was a Spartan II who were kidnapped as children; most of Noble team were Spartan IIIs (a more "disposable" version); and then they moved on to Spartan IVs who were basically normal soldiers volunteering as adults.

Spartan IV's? You mean Spartan III's?

Edit: Well apparently.. Yea, Spartan IV's.

Chief was a Spartan II. Spartan III's were a cheaper 'throwaway' variant of the Spartan program. Not as powerful or expensive as their predecessors (thus the size disparity between the SPIII's and Jorge in Reach and why Elites were much more physically intimidating).

I wonder what the primary differences are between SPII's and SPIV's.

Although there should be more advanced techniques for some of the bio-upgrades/alterations (mentioned for the SIIIs actually, not requiring them to be of a certain age, for instance), the SIV's won't have nearly the same amount of training considering they're volunteer soldiers instead of being trained from age 6. The upgrades are probably not nearly as invasive (grafting alloy to their bones) either.

Apparently most SIIIs didn't have powered armor (Noble team was an exception) although it's probably more about just a new set of subjects recruited after the war.

Truth be told the backstory of the franchise is a bit convoluted IMHO, a lot of stuff happened in books and such that weren't even referenced in the main games, and there are some contradictions as well. Like the Reach game having absolutely no connection to the Reach novel... actually no word about the other SIIs in any of the games, even Jorge's origins aren't properly explained. Then there are the new books - Cryptum and Primordium from Greg Bear and Glasslands and whatever from another writer, all seem to be significant additions and I wonder how well the game will be able to integrate all that...

SIIIs were recruited as adults, too. Their abilities should be quite similar... it's a bit confusing, isn't it? :) Reach never really bothers to explain the differences, all you see is that Jorge is quite a bit larger than the rest of Noble team.

Most SIIIs were orphans, children from 6-12... By the time of 2552 the surviving ones were just adults. ;) They used less risky techniques to avoid high rejection rates and reduce the need to be more selective about the candidates (Halsey had some sort of criteria for the genetics).

Hmm, I might be confused here... anyway, the rest of the Noble team members were clearly inferior to Jorge, but I can't tell how they relate to the SIVs. Nevertheless, they could still become coop characters, if Halo3 could work with a bunch of Elites ;)

There were a few left-over SIIIs in another group (Ghosts of Onyx/Glasslands) who joined the SIV as trainers and such, though they weren't particularly old (late teens). Can't remember about the one or two that survived from Beta Company (2530s group).

Again - the books only managed to mess up the backstory IMHO :) Then again I don't think it'll be a problem to people coming to play Halo 4, even if they haven't seen any previous games at all... But it's still a mess :)

Noble team was mostly Alpha and Beta Company (aside from Jorge), so they'd be adults by the time of Reach. Jorge is clearly quite a bit older. The only confusing bit for me is that Jorge isn't the leader, though I guess he's just not leadership material. :p

The hardest thing to explain about Noble team is the rainbow colors of their armor ;) Makes sense in gameplay terms of course, you want the player to be able to easily tell them from each other from the start. But why would anyone want to wear blue, read, or orange armor? At least Chief's green made sense in any outdoor environments based on clorophyll ;)

pft. :p

edit:

Wonder if they'd do something crazy like create a Halo/Ringworld from a slice of the Shield World/dyson sphere. >_>
