I am not really a fan of the Halo series, which is kind of odd because I always end up buying the game.
The Halo 4 Railgun
Halo 4’s arsenal includes numerous weapons, some of which you’re familiar with, and others of which you are not. One of the all-new aforementioned items you’ll have at your disposal in Halo 4 is the Railgun. Manufactured by Acheron Security, its official designation is the Asymmetric Recoilless Carbine-920.
The ARC-920 Railgun is a compact-channel linear accelerator that fires a high-explosive round at incredible speed, delivering both kinetic and explosive force to hard and soft targets alike. (Insert discreet cough here.)
Before we go any further, I must ask you to raise your right hand and repeat after me:
“I, (insert your super 1337 gamertag here), solemnly swear to remember that the following information is not only subject to change, but in all likelihood will change before the game ships. I will also remember that when one of the below details does change, I will not be angry at bs angel, or send her angry messages. And that goes for as long as we both shall live.”
Now that the formalities are out of the way, let’s chat about the current iteration of the Railgun. To give you a reference point, we’ll compare it to the Spartan Laser.
Like the Spartan Laser, the Railgun has to be charged before firing. There are appropriate (and awesome) audio cues when that’s happening. The Railgun’s charge time feels like approximately half of the Laser’s.
One of the more notable differences between the Railgun and the Laser is the Railgun does not have a zoom function. While I initially saw that as a negative, it turned into a positive because the lack of a zoom function eliminates those moments when you’re making an adjustment, someone shoots you and pulls you out of zoom, and you end up overcorrecting and missing your target. The Railgun offers more of a static experience where the corrections you’re making, whether someone is shooting you or not, are going to be the same. If you move left, the reticle is going to stay to the left. If you move right, the reticle is going to stay to the right. Ultimately, it lets you muscle your way through taking fire, allowing you to be clutch with a one-hit kill weapon.
The Railgun does not do as much vehicle damage as the Laser, but strategically placed shots are able to change a vehicle’s force and direction. When its projectile hits a vehicle, it has the potential to send it flying, rolling, or perhaps even off a cliff because of the kinetic energy (similar to repeatedly hitting a Warthog with a Brute Shot).
Once the Railgun has been fired, it feels instantaneous; the moving projectile doesn’t feel like it has a lot of travel time (think Rocket Launcher vs. Laser). Overall, in its current iteration, it’s considered a power weapon as it is super lethal and deadly accurate. When the game ships, though, it may end up shooting marshmallows. Marshmallows of death, doom, and destruction, but marshmallows all the same.
Two nights at 12am I got a text from a good buddy of mine about how he got a beta trial for halo 4. I head over to his house an assume it's bullshit, but given that his dad works for Microsoft i let it slide and see what's up. Lo and behold, he has a working online beta of halo 4. If you google "halo 4" beta you'll see almost nothing about the release that happened last night or even youtube. The beta will be happening over the next week with a different playlist every day. I'm putting this in the regs cause this sounds very hush hush from his father and the ID's running across the screen at all times.
So for the breakdown of it. It was a single map Capture the Flag that my friends played over and over the entire night. First off lets start with the controls. I play bumper jumper and everything was shot to hell. Left trigger was now deploy equipment and grenade was now X. Sprint was A and change grenade was up on the D pad. Everything else was the same. The whole aspect of bumper jumper and not taking your thumbs off the sticks for the most important things(i.e grenades) is completely lost in the new layout.
Next let's talk about the loadouts. It is now similar to COD in the fact that you spawn with your weapons and almost none of them are on the map. You get 1 main weapon (AR, BR, DMR, shotty or Carbine) and 1 secondary (pistol, plasma pistol) and 3 customizable tactical/equipment options. I will try my best to remember all of them but no promises that I did not forget any. The choices are a auto turret, a field of view vision enhancement that sees through walls and objects to detect enemies, 2 main weapons(my personal favorite), faster shield recharge, a shield that deflects small damage, being able to use your radar when scoped in and a jetpack. Personally, I can't remember what goes in which category but we usually used the auto turret and 2 main weapons with DMR and BR. Also, sprint is now available in classes with the A button on bumper jumper. Now for the breakdown of the weapons, the BR is badass at medium range where at long to very long range the DMR is hands down the best one out of them. On the map, weapons drop down such as the needler, sniper and spartan laser at designated points instead of spawning. It seems like the sniper has the least auto aim out of any of the halos(1, 2 3 and reach) and is harder to use. With the auto turret, it seemed best to use it when someone was chasing you down around corners when you were one shot.

As for the rest of the abilities, here's my 2 cents:
Tactical Package are secondary perks that should affect gameplay as well but are not active abilities:
- Firepower allows two primary weapons
- Resupply probably lets you carry max ammo from the beginning or resupply during battle (but that would not be a passive ability, so I think it's something like the former)
- Grenadier is pretty obvious, carry 4 grenades right from the start
- Awareness allows you to use your radar while zoomed in
- Shielding is hard to know, but I'd guess it makes the player receive less damage when taking headshots or when taking explosive damage (think flak jacket)
- AA Efficiency... well, it might be easy to figure out if we knew what AA stands for, but perhaps Anti-Armour? I'll take a wild guess and say it does more damage to vehicles
As for Armour Abilities (which could also be the AA above):
- Promethean Vision is the see-through-walls we heard about
- Regeneration Field sound obvious, think Regenerator from Halo 3
- Hologram and Active Camouflage are the same
- Hardlight Shield must be some kind of temporary Overshield like that orb from H3
- As for the Thruster Pack, I'm pretty sure it's not like the old Jet Pack. The Halo Wiki mentions it being less advanced and less efficient than Antigravity Packs, the Jet Packs used by the Covenant. I'd say it's for hovering while going forward a bit faster than normal on regular maps and more efficient in zero gravity areas.
Well, the E3 2011 reveal was pre-rendered stuff, but that picture is obviously a painting.Seriously, what the hell are you talking about???
There was no pre-rendered footage.
The image you linked is so totally obviously a painting and not anything ingame that you need to be blind not to see it.
So is this some silly joke??
The pre-rendered footage which get released before each halo game always look amazing.
This acts as a double edge sword though, because the game ends up looking sub-par by comparison.
This happened with halo2, halo3, halodst and halo:reach.
By now we all know the 360 will never produce images like this:
so why are they still doing this? If they released screens with more realistic graphics, then the final result would look more impressive
Now that noobs are at the helm, controls are one area of concern. Bungie did controls exceptionally well. Hopefully, 343 recognizes this and doesn't try to fix what was never broken.
