Maybe Microsoft ordered manufaction of 10mil consoles, and they cannot change the production process now. ;)
I don't think that's the way it works. I would think there would be constant refinement, just for such a case as malfunction devices or process improvements.

In reality it is not about the ordered qty,but the lenght of the supply chain.
Probably they fill up the chain with the current parts,and if they do change that can hapen only by a have to compatible way.
If they want to change the design,they have to flush out the whole supply chain,and if they don't manage it properly,or if the customer demand is too low, the cost of the flush out can be horrible.
If you check the dvd modification timetable,you will see that the supply chain is at least two month long,and it can be filled up with parts, due the slowed sales.
So,the slowed sales is increase the cost of the quality improvement.
