God of War - IGN and GameSpot Reviews

a 480p image already looks like crap on 40" screens...

I would say this is a very harsh assessment.

On my 42" plasma screen, most 480p games look excellent. God of War is one of those. Certainly better than the equivalent interlaced picture on a 32" CRT TV. (Viewing distance 2 metres)

I have not taken a game to a larger screen size with a quality set-up yet.

With DVD, I have found 84" (7 feet) screen to be the practical limit of Progressive PAL DVD format. Going to a screen size larger than this will start to reveal the constraints of the format. (Viewing distance 3 metres)

As a rule you should sit approximately twice the screen size away from the screen for comfortable viewing.

Guess i'm just very picky. I was looking at The Incredibles being played on a 50" plasma at 480P and though it looked pretty good, the blurriness and lack of detail from the low resolution did bug me a little bit. I can't wait to see Pixar movies on HDDVD/BlueRay, they'll be absolutely amazing.

The problem is that talking about IQ issues and resolution and all this crap all the time, and having a 20/20 sight, you tend to subconsciously "look for" flaws. I'm fully aware of it and sometimes i wish i were "ignorant".
Oh well...

now you guys believe me. ;) i said in my thoughts last month here. god war at best is 8/10 game, most go to the high prodtion values. its a competent action game. no more. dmc ninja gaiden easily better imho.

i take difficulty but i rather it as a test of skills than test of patience. i never a fan of cheap deaths, cheap hits, cheap timed countdowns. i not bother to complete. yes i pass the hades level. stopped at temple of oracle.

On game rankings the following games received these ratings

GOW: 93.4% based on 49 media outlets

DMC3: 84.3% based on 48 media outlets

Ninja Gaiden: 92.1% based on 86 outlets.

Now you be the judge. I think I've proved my point.

God of War, best Action/Adventure game release this generation.

So now that the "honey moon" period ended.

Does the game deserves the ultra high scores alot of electronic and paper publications asigned?

I played the game myself but not enough to make a prudent judgement. However i did saw someone go trough the game. It is a very good game but i still think it was overapreciated, and i still think the edgy content pushed it some steps up.

As always time is the ultimate test. :)

The "edgy" content was minimal, so I doubt it contributed much, if anything, to the scores. Like the hype for the game itself, it was overblown.

In my humble estimation, God of War gets a solid 8.5, no more.

Well im basing my reasoning about the "edgy" content because that is one of the first things that pop into a conversation about God of War. Thas based on my experience. I also think i read some reviews that mentioned the sexual content, but i dont exactly remember where.

As for GoW being overated it looks like we share the same opinion. At least it looks like it.

See I respect everybody's opionion here but I hate to see a great game released, get great scores, get alot of post release hype (see this is rare most games get alot of pre-release hype) and now have to here people say that the game is ok. By every means the game got what it deserved. I love Sony and its videogame products, but I can honestly say that games like Halo, Ninja Gaiden, and Metroid Prime got the scores that they deserved. I played all for about 2 hours a piece and didn't see why people loved it so much.

Then I thought about it and said to myself I have to respect the millions of people playing and reviewing the game and realize the truth. And the truth is they all received scores that they deserved and so did God of War.

Finished the game tonight and watched some of the extra content, including deleted scenes, making of, etc.

Yep, solid 8.5, but unfortunately, it's not staying in my collection. Trade-in time tomorrow.

The game actually rekindled my interest in Mark of Kri, which I never finished. Somehow, I think that game seemed more likable.

In any case, maybe we'll check out God of War 2 on PS3... but I'm not making any promises. ;)

Yeah, this game is way over rated IMO. The game is just way too easy even on the highest difficulty setting for an action game. Platforming and puzzles weren't all that interesting either. I gave it 5/10. A good rental for casual gamers.

Yeah sure it is too easy on god mode . 5/10 right...

Yep too easy. That's right 5/10.

Have you played the game on god mode?. If you say for instance that the second part of the final boss is too easy on god mode... Man I don't know what to say. The game is definately not too easy on god mode. It is too easy on easy and maybe too easy on normal, I haven't tried the hard setting, but god mode is one of the hardest games I have played, and saying that it's too easy is insane. does 5/10 mean in your scale average, or garbage?.

I think this game and Ninja Gaiden are on their own league in this genre, and both deserve 95/100.

Yep I finished it. God mode is still pretty easy. Maybe if I can get it up front, maybe it'll be harder if it is on your first play. Hopefully they'll crank up difficulty in action game, several notch next gen.

I just mark action games on its challenge purely. Base on the game system they offer and how much they exploit the system to offer challenges to me and nothing else. 5/10 is pretty average this gen. For example NG is a 6/10. DMC is 5/10, DMC2 is 1/10, DMC3 is 5/10.

God mode opens up after the game is completed once, now I'm stuck at the final boss on god mode, and probably will never finish it. You are going to be disapointed if you want games to be harder, I'm sure 99% of people think that god mode is very hard.

That's why there should be difficulty settings, or adaptive difficulty. Don't overpower most games with super-hard difficulty, and don't wimp out on hardcore challenge-fiends with sissy easiness. Let the player choose their level.
