God of War - IGN and GameSpot Reviews

You can have T rated games that allow you to cut people into little peices. But when it comes to sex, god forbid.

Says more about the people who makes the laws than the people that break them.. or something :)

Something i was wondering about...

This game uses prerendered backgrounds like old RE and DMC 3 correct? I just hope that if this is the case then the 3rd person camera wont be an issue like I encountered with those games. Although good games the camera and controls made me want to throw the controller out the window :)

This may be the game that gets me to buy a PS2 and hell I will still have a years worth of life left in the console.

Blakjedi: Plus a billion PS2 games from the past 4 years, and then the PS1 library.

This is why I'll likely get a PS3. Biggest f***ing library ever, and likely the fastest next-gen console with the most support.

Aww yeah.

Of course, I'll be tabbing the Revolution too. *cough*

Reviews pouring in now. Average of 97 on metacritic.com.

Snippet from Gamespy, which gave it a five out of five:

I feel totally comfortable saying that God of War is the best action game ever to grace the PS2. The gameplay, graphics, sound, production, presentation, and story are excellent. It all adds up to an epic Greek adventure where you can execute some of the slickest moves in gaming. Depending on your tastes, you could argue that it's the best PS2 game ever. I could see how some gamers would argue for things like Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy X, etc., but it's really like arguing over who the basketball player of all time is. Cases can be made for Michael or Magic or Larry, but those guys are all undeniably brilliant players. God of War is an undeniably brilliant game. This is a game that every PS2 owner should experience.

More high praise from Game-Over.net (97%).

Simply put, this is what the PS2 was designed for, and this is what we’ve been waiting for: games that literally show off the power and technology of Sony’s machine. Sure, it might be one of the oldest kids on the block, but it still knows plenty of tricks to put its competition in its place, and God of War captures every single nuance of action/platforming gaming. Personally, my words do the game a disservice, because I can’t even explain how beautiful this game is. If you own a PS2, you owe it to yourself to get this game.

W H A T ?

DMC3 is completely 3D, like God of War is. Have you seen the videos? I don't think people would praise this game as much as they do if the game was an old school pre-rendered backgrounds game...

Maybe he meant the far away backgrounds are prerendered.
Like the far far away mountains on the background, or the far far far awat clouds on the sky, or far far far far away stars and sun :?
Or maybe not.

That's called a "skybox". Used in every 3D game that has a sky. ;)

I'm amazed to see people, in 2005, still confused about pre-rendered and completely 3D backgrounds...

Bloody hell, this game is picking up rave reviews from everyone! 97.something% on gamerankings.com so far. San Andreas is at 95.something%, although the more reviews you get the lower the avarage gets...

Hmmnnnn......

I just hope this isnt a very good game that gets hyped to the stratosphere because of some out of the ordinary mature content.

I just hope it is as good as this so called "profesional" reviewers are promoting it.

Play time we'll tell.

If anything, this game wasn't hyped at all. The reviewers around the world are loving the game, calling it the best action game ever on PS2, even after that huge surprise that was DMC3, and all the great action games on the platform, so there must be a reason.
And they're not praising the "mature" content, they're praising the presentation and the apparently excellent gameplay and fighting mechanics.
It's all good.

Thanks for considering my reply.

Right now the game is been hyped. Maybe it didnt had the luxury of being hyped since the day of its unveiling, but at this time there's alot of hype because of the reviews.

There's no doubt that the game is good, really good. The question is does it deserves the 97-100s the press is giving the game?

Sorry to drive this of topic, but as an example. It's like 2002 over again. When Splinter Cell was released it was hailed as the best stealth game ever, in reality i think that Hitman 2 was the better game, it offered more freedom and ironically it had better use of shadows (not refering to light on -light off gameplay wich doesnt have.) Check out the Chaos Theory now, wich is an awsome game, is being hyped because it lets you complete the missions in different ways. Something Hitman has been offering since the first game. All this crap i typed means that "press" tends
to enter ,a lock of thinking state, with some games even if they arent as great as they though they are.

I know that the point i raised was about the mature theme driving the scores, but what i wanted to imply is that God of War is an very good game that maybe is benefiting with shock value, think of it as the extra icing on the cake. Im just causious, soon enough will all find out.

Also maybe, there isnt recent PS2 game that measures up to the new Splinter Cell or RE4, i dont think DMC 3 was up there.

Im very paranoid. Im sorry :)

I think you just need to take it easy, play the game and decide for youself :D
I surely will, hype or not... In the end, if the game weren't very good, it wouldn't have gotten the reviews it got. There is not reason why all the reviewers would hype the game now that it's already been released. They are happy with it cause they have played and finished it.

This might be the only game i pick up this year together with Shadow of the Colossus.

Problem about reviews is that we all have our own taste, so what appeal to or please someone may be completely uninteresting for someone else.
Just check doom3 reviews, they are almost all good/very good, while I really can't stand the game, I would rate it under average at best.

Best is yet to have a chance to play the game to feel it.

I just bought the game at lunch, and can't wait to tear off the shrinkwrap tonight.

Impressions to follow soon after. :)

I'VE PLAYED IT! 8)

Oh, hell yeah. This thing screams "AAA PS2 title."

The first thing you'll notice is that the production values are sky-high. The second may be that the control is fluid and the fighting a ton of fun. This may be the most satisfying sword-play in any game this generation (and previous gens, too).

I found myself grinning at the screen as Kratos hacked, slashed, sliced, and diced his way through enemies, often with Matrix-style slowdowns and the occasional special-move fatality.

I'm also really fond of the "mini-games" - the special sequences in battle when you are offered the opportunity to punch in a sequence of button inputs that, if executed correctly, result in a spectacular and punishing assault on your enemy (usually a boss or sub-boss). Succeed, and you dish out major damage. Fail, and it's you who gets the beatdown.

The scope and scale of the levels and monsters looks to live up to the hype. Let's just say that that hydra looks and sounds a lot bigger on your TV set than it does on your monitor in a Quicktime video.

Visually, the game reminds me of an evolved Mark of Kri, albeit with a harder edge and sharper textures. And aurally, the orchestral music is a great backdrop to the clashing and clanging of swords and shields.

The only thing I've found iffy so far are a couple (brief) areas of platforming - or, more accurately, precision beam-walking. I've never been a fan of such devices, and I'm not so here. But as I said, these sequences so far have been mercifully brief.

So does this game live up to the hype? After only an hour and fifteen minutes of play, I'd say it's a little early to make any definitive statements - but things are looking very, very good so far.

If the story and action of God of War continue at the current pace, this is definitely going to be a PS2 classic that I will look back on fondly for years to come.

Wow...

God of War for the PlayStation 2 was released on 3/22 from SCEA. It has been reviewed by 11 websites and magazines including Gamespy, GameSpot, Playstation Magazine and 1UP. The average review ratio for all 11 editorial reviews has been 97.1% making this title place 3rd in the all time overall rankings and 1st among PlayStation 2 Games.

To the guy who mentioned reviews don't count, mentioning Doom3 as an example, this is why i love Gamerankings. It gives an average out of hundreds of reviews from internet websites, so you get an idea of who liked the game and who didn't.
Here you go
Gives the full story i guess, lots of websites giving it average or bad scores....

And it even shows how our beloved GT4 got lots of reviews that are far from a hyped perfect 10.

We'll just have to wait until more reviews of God of War get published to get a good idea. So far so good i'd say.
