Gmail invitations available

Um... could someone please tell little ignorant me what the ruckus is all about?

I've got an invitation from a friend. I just don't understand why this is so fantastic. I mean - it is just another free e-mail, right? Or have I missed anything fundamental? Where 1 Gb does not count as fundamental, just significant.

Or to put it another way: If I'm happy with my current e-mail system, is there any compelling reason to go g-mail?

Well if u're really happy with what u're using, then why change email address, with all the issues that causes (telling everyone what ur new address, people sending emails to ur old one even after 1823 times u've told them...)

Bec'se gmail is available only by invitation and it is 1GB so it is exciting to have a gmail account. Its in human nature to behave like this.
