Gears of War 2

Are the cutscenes that spectacular compared to gameplay? From the gameplay footage we've seen there's a hell of a lot of stuff going on at once and framerate stays stable.

When there's a lot going on, the framerate goes into single digits or very close really, with tearing that basically breaks the screen in two. The motion blur makes it appear a bit smoother though.
Concerning cutscenes, basically every cutscene that involves more than 3 or 4 characters in prerendered, while almost all of the few realtime ones are plagued with severe framerate drops and stutterings and almost complete lack of post processing effects (depth of field).

So all that 'crowd' stuff they promised doesn't really work that well?

That's sorta interesting. Would you say that the 'headphone segments' happen with less time between them than in the first game? I mean, are the segments of gameplay between them shorter?

Yeah ! Alot more, I didn't know they were used to hide loading, but we were annoyed that every five or ten minutes marcus and DOm start talking on the phone! Breaks the action , especially on a launch party!

Hrmm, do the cutscenes run notably slower than the actual game in the sequel? My primary complaint about the first game was cutscenes ran so slowly, almost to the point that I felt quesy/motion sick... and I never get motion sickness in games. It really detracted from the ambience of the game.

I'm still on the fence as to whether I pick this up on Friday. I'm having so much fun with Fallout, and Fable is sitting there waiting for me too. But I'm hardly the kind to miss out on launch-day excitement ;)

The cutscenes ran smooth and are pre-rendered, I think, coz the Lighting improves significantly for them. They have a very nice filmic ambience to them. I mean the guy deciding the shots and cameras of the cutscenes is a talented guy. They felt good.

The crowd works, as I mentioned earlier. Just that when the locust crowd comes-in they are so far below that you xcan hardly see them. They could all be lowest LOD same instances of a model and we wouldn't know. In short, it doesn't impress you at all, it just happens and you say"Well, there's the crowd they were talking about" and you can mow them down in 10secs with your turret gun. Maybe, later in teh game they have them all rushing into your face, that would be cool! but in the first Act, it wasn't !

These impressions I am giving you are from the first Act. I haven't played the whole game, but it is not the technology that will Wow you, but the new Art ! Gameplay felt the same but smoother. I wanted a "bigger" feeling in the encounters but that was sorely missing:???:. It was still small areas of action.

It gets much bigger later on.

Things like that huge increase scale, extra model detail, the very superficially destructible environment, fancier water and effects etc, probably have as much to do with tech as art.

.

You'll never fight more than 4 or 5 enemies at once in the campaign. And the "scale" doesn't really get bigger, just that the backgrounds sometimes have more going on in them, more smoke, buildings in the distance and sometimes a building collapsing, nothing that affects the gameplay and actual interactivity.

In the GT videoreview, or maybe the IGN video review, they hinted about what the "meat cube demo" was used for. Anyone know or have footage of what that is in the game?

Worm... :devilish:

As far as the framerate goes i never had a problem with it, it felt a lot smother than the first and was consistent for me through the whole campaign.

There are more segments with massive hordes of enemies but they all tend to involve shooting from turrets at a long distance, you never get into a situation that you feel overwhelmed.

As far as the single player campain goes i liked the first game better. The variety in this game doesent come from different tactics in fighting enemys but from generally bad vehicle segments. There is nothing like the blind enemy from the first game, every enemy is defeated using exactly the same tactics just point and shoot. The enemys you fight in the first act will be what you fight in the last and even the end boss/scene consists of just standard enemys you have been fighting the whole game. Im not saying the campaign is bad because it isnt it just didnt seam that great to me either.

You seem to be voicing the same complaints I felt with Act01 ! A good campiagn but it feels the same, kindof dated(If I may say the word) Hmmm.....well, anyways:rolleyes: to each one his own..........But I do hope they port it to PC, I would like to try out the whole game anyways.

What about the encounter that involves water and a certain ugly creature?
That's fairly impressive tech at work, that monster is amazingly detailed, given the size of it.

Apparently the opening cinematic, maybe spoilerrific, I have no idea.

It does sorta bring up something that bugged me in GeoW1, and I realize I'm talking about story in this game, but are Serans colonists, or is just not-Earth? Because I dunno, it seems like the Locusts are evil mostly on virtue of being uglier. (There's an idea for an Opposing Force-style spin-off in there somewhere.)

There's also some sort of Sci-Fi channel exclusive special surprise preview, haven't seen it yet. (Actually, halfway through, don't bother -- except for a bit of John DiMaggio.)

It is fairly impressive as you put it, but we are talking about two characters fighting a monster in a 5 square feet scenario. Everything else is a simple background and a lot of water.
You basically have an almost identical fight involving a lot of water and a platform, with a nicely detailed monster and a detailed background, in Resistance 2 (talk about coincidence ).

But that's not "scale", it just gives you the false impression of open space, as the invisible walls confines you into this 5 feet area. There are certainly more impressive scenes in both games.

If i had to describe my experience with the single player campaign in one word dated would be it...

Well, from the get-go they admitted that they weren't going to really touch the whole formula of the game, just make it 'bigger, badder and more bad-ass' so it's not really a surprise, but you can bet on reviewers not mentioning it.

had my 4hr run at the game, as expected it plays and feels exactly like gears1 save for some minor elements. the game does give you an impression of a grander scale, but only onrail. the actual walking field is quite restricted. the textures are highres for sure, but they really hurt my eyes for the overly abused grains and shinyness. the lighting is beautiful but looked unatural at times and i really hope UE4 would support better dynamic shadows. overall an impressive package which i will explore more tomorrow.

Hate to breakup the downplay fest but Gears 2 is available at 7-11, NOW!

But... but... there are no 7-11's where I am going! I am in the middle of a cross country move and won't have my 360 available for weeks, alas the hype stomping feedback from the press is making the wait bearable

The bad part is you guys will all be pros long before I get annoyed with the voice acting (I cannot stand Marcus).

Gears 2 is available NOW? In the US? I thought the release date was Nov 7 (7-11 is that the joke?)
