Gears of War 2

I didn't realize 7-11 actually sold video games. At least, I haven't seen one around here that does.

If i had to describe my experience with the single player campaign in one word dated would be it...

If this game is dated then every game i've played this year (shooter wise) is ancient. This has been one of the best single player shooters i've played in a while .

No "Sevies" around here unfortunately :( but I'm going to pick up R2 to hold me over.

Id agree with that :D

Dated doesnt nessecarilly mean bad it just doesnt do a single thing that felt fresh to me. People will love it regardless but it left me a little disapointed. I dont know what i was expecting though i always knew it would be pretty much the same as gears 1.

I know it doesn't mean bad , however gears one changed shooters and you can't change shooters with every release. They took what worked in gears and made it better. Reviews wont mention it not adding alot of new things because the same questions would have to be asked in other reviews like resistance 2 , cod5 , left 4 dead . I don't think any of them would fair well when asked that question.

Really all I want out of a shooter or any game for that matter is a solid enjoyable experience. I dont particularly look for titles to feel "fresh" or associate games with tag lines like "innovative". My primary problem with these concepts is that they are best viewed in retrospect. I have played so many titles over the years (and primarily this gen) that throw around statements of "innovation" only to see minimal gameplay differences that really do not add anything to the playability or hamper a titles enjoyability. Not only that but then when whole games are associated with innovation its is often a cumbersome event, for instance Im not overly impressed with LBP and Im simply not a fan of the Wiimote.

There was a statement made by Bungie years ago that a game consists or 5 minutes of fun and then reintroduces those five minutes in a a multitude of ways (not word for word of course). I absolutely agree with this concept.

Innovation always occurs with time though I think it is a concept that is best suited to steps rather than leaps.

The only thing I really expect out of Gears 2 or Res. 2 is more of what made the first titles great/enjoyable.

-All In My Opinion Of Course- :)

It is fairly impressive as you put it, but we are talking about two characters fighting a monster in a 5 square feet scenario. Everything else is a simple background and a lot of water.
You basically have an almost identical fight involving a lot of water and a platform, with a nicely detailed monster and a detailed background, in Resistance 2 (talk about coincidence ).

But that's not "scale", it just gives you the false impression of open space, as the invisible walls confines you into this 5 feet area. There are certainly more impressive scenes in both games.
So you're not the only one who noticed that funy coincidence. I think the Gears fight is a little more memorable because it seems a little bolder and a little more balls to the wall ,though balls to the wall stuff is sort of the point of that franchise.

Mod : We don't do game comparisons in game threads. Each game thread is to discuss the game itself, what people do and do not like about it. Any intelligent comparisons that want to be made across different games need to be made in a separate thread and with clearly identified goals, so questions like 'which is better' actualy have some parameter to measure.

Why are the mods so strict on this site? Remind me of librarians.

A different Mod: Because this forum has many rules. However, mods will also be proactive in removing 'noise' posts, or posts that may be taking a thread off topic.. VS posts, ie, console vs console or game vs game posts are flame-bait; posts that just end up starting arguments, arguments which usually have no logical basis - only an irrational/emotional basis.

Picked it up last night and now I'm tempted to call in sick :( Thankfully I have a 4 day weekend coming up. If you have a good surround system, make sure to go into options and turn up the music by a few clicks. It's a good score. I'm still on Act 1 and it's already been more intense and action packed than Gears 1. The fluidity in movement is noticeable immediately. No sticking to random walls or pausing infront of obstacles. Queuing commands as you roadie run really smooths things out.

in multi... can you confirm how matchmaking works?

does it have any kind of auto start system (like Halo or CoD4) or do you need to sit in the lobbies and wait for random's to finish their beers and cigs and talking about their dogs to start the frickin game? :p

Picked up the LE edition yesterday at Best Buy. Got a Great deal with the "priced match" 1600 MS point card and the Centaur tank free in addition to a using my $5.00 Reward Zone points. After taxes it came to $69.08. The Centaur tank rang up for $31+ prior to the clerk discounting it out.

Started around 8pm till around 1:30am. I'm having a blast so far. The textures and lighting are definitely improved, but there seems to be more blur when moving than what I remember from Gears 1. I'll probably do multiplayer as soon as finish the campaign.

this game is hotness.

I'm not a fan of the multiplayer but the SP campaign is the most beautiful, engaging game I've played so far.

the best graphics (HAS to be seen in motion, wow) I've yet seen and the story is much better and more engrossing than the first. epic.

I picked up the collector's edition on friday, but haven't opened it yet... I'm going to finish Fallout 3 before I'll play this. It's not that I don't want to :) But I'll try to play one game at a time, that way I'm more likely to see end credits.

Few more days...

Definitely, the sound seems amazingly punchy. Especially the hammerburst fire. I dont have a sound system but I can tell if I did it would sound amazing.

Really really liking this game so far. The graphics are very good, especially when you first fight the Kantu underground for example.

I cant say I'm a fan of the pre-scripted nature of act 2. Overall though it is definitely delivering that holiday blockbuster experience in spades.

The cutscenes are also significantly better looking than in part 1 imo. They definitely notched up the amount of cutscenes from the first game, but I like it. They are well done.

I'll toss this in, a recent CliffyB interview I found interesting with comments about the possibility of multi-DVD Gears future

http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/207731/cliff-bleszinski-dishes-on-gears-and-games/

Speaking of visuals, the game looks great. Are you starting to push up against the DVD limits? Will you have to go to two discs?

We did pre-render two or three cinematics in the game due to memory issues, but the rest are all generated in-engine, which saves space. It's a one-disc game, though there is a second disc with behind-the-scenes videos.

Do you think you'll ever need to go multi-disc on a future game?

I don't know. I like pointing to the Super Nintendo, back in the day. The developers would figure out ways to get smarter with that one cartridge, using procedural textures and the like to save space. There's always a way to squeeze more water from that stone, man. And this console's going to be around for a while, so we'll figure it out.
