Gears of War 2

This is not a disc capacity discussion thread! C'mon people, you should know the drill by now! Game threads are for discussing the game. For discussing technical aspects, use the General forum or Tech forum. We already have DVD capacity threads, where references to devs on DVD capacity should be placed.

I picked this up yesterday, and I'm pretty stunned at just how good this game looks. It's odd, because after going through Fallout, Fable and Dead Space, I forgot just was a 100% amazingly detailed world could look like, without some sort of obvious compromise being made.

The other odd thing is at the very start of the game, I saw the absolute worst looking texture from recent memory. You start the tutorial, and walk down a bath, and lo and behold there's a "truck" which was basically just a box with extremely low-res textures. Texture pop-in? Well they didn't improve. I almost wish I had a camera, since I thought to myself "oh brother" the moment I walked past it. A very bad first impression! Luckily though I haven't seen anything like that since.

Gameplay wise, it's Gears. It's a lot of fun, with some clever set-piece battles and some very satisfying sound effects. The head-shot sound is so squishy! Cliffy B certainly delivered in the "bigger, better, more badass" quote, though there's not much here to make it a thinkpiece :p

I'll try multi later, too. Should be good :]

Loving this game so far. 2 Marathon sessions down, but have to go do a Texas Holdem thing with the wife. After I watch the Notre Dame (on DVR), I'm jumping back in to finish the SP campaign if I can.

It seems that 80% of my friends on Live are playing it as well.

He's pointing out that your images have been reduced/downsampled. How can you say they are representative of the full image?

Act II and Act IV have some staggering vistas. UE3 shines bright with cavernous, subtarraneous environments (as do Epic's artists obviously)
Occassionally, I would encounter impressive texturing, lighting, and particle effects in a unified scenario, and I almost believed I was getting a tease of what UE4 will look like on the next generation of hardware.
The game can look that good.
But I found the visuals in the interior sections of Act III to be quite underwhelming. Textures were good (but not nearly as good as the ones in the cave) and I found the lighting and art direction (endlessly repeating walls of ugly brown) uniformly bland.
Thankfully, the subsequent vistas in the mountain range and the final encounter with the Corpsers and Brumaks brought a visual impact that was on par with Act II.

This game is awesome...

It took an hour or so for me to get into it, but then I really did. Better than the first gears for me!

Some things don't really make sense, some things are a bit stupid, but if you just take it for what it is you'll have a most enjoyable gaming experience. I played through it all today, couldn't stop playing! Took about 9 hours I guess....

oh, and horde is brilliant

The cave levels are mindblowingly beautiful.

Also, the story seems a little more engaging this time.
What they did to Dom's wife really made me want to kick some locust ass.

We're all smart enough here to know that changes downsampled, offscreen images make to the rendered image, and groper never claimed otherwise. They are just screenshots that show the texture work etc. Some people are making a way bigger deal of a few images than they warrant!

I'm guessing he was confused by your misuse of terminology. There is nothing "off-screen" about the shots you posted.
Off-screen here means 'taken off the screen', as it has done since people starting posting photos of their TVs/monitors. This is nothing new!

Just finished the SP, overall very satisfying experience. The graphics sure looked impressive texture and lighting wise. But I hate the repeated normalmaps which are too overwhelming to stare. The lack of dynamic environment shadow also breaks the illusion quite a bit. The story can get quite emotional at a certain point but mostly were as expected. The gameplay is fun and actions are relentless. Truly the only reason why I bought a 360.

Mod : Can you please either get a keyboard with a working shift key, or use the shift key that you've got? ;) Capital letters were invented to improve readability, and though we don't mind the occasional typo, we would like to see them properly applied on the whole.

From all the off-screens i have seen/found so far in the net, these are the less blurry. That's what i mean with crispy.

Sorry, yes I was talking about them being down-sampled to hide aliasing. I also thought they were boring choices of SS compared to many others. The game is one of the best looking this gen, I was only talking about those four.

Sorry to offend.

@DrJay24
No prob pal. We added just one more misconception (and rather a boring one) in the internet gaming world

In a par note: Gears of War 2 sells 2.1 million on day one

...The implication of this is that week two sales should show a lower than normal dropoff so it is entirely possible that the game may hit 3.5 million sold by the end of week two - in just nine days.

As you can see, Gears of War 2 is shaping up to be a formidable competitor in the November NPD data, and looks to eclipse Gears of War 1 worldwide sales by the end of the year (which is at 5.2 million units).

Off-screen here means 'taken off the screen', as it has done since people starting posting photos of their TVs/monitors. This is nothing new!
"Off-screen" already had an established definition long before B3D even existed. What is the point of bastardizing the term to mean the exact opposite here, instead of just using "on-screen" which has long been around to convey the meaning you are attempting to apply to it's antonym?

Just finished the campaign mode..what a ride!!!

Not perfect by any means, but everything really clicked with me. This was definitely better paced than the first and I really enjoyed the story.

I've been invited to a few games while playing and haven't been able to get into any multiplayer going. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Tried Horde solo without bots and made it to wave 3 on normal (yeah I sucked-it was only one play thru though).
