Gdc '08

They don't usually announce too much at GDC do they? I mean, most info is really for the industry?
Yes, but us as industry watchers want to know! We want to know about the tools and the software initiatives. Sony have (re)released the PhyreEngine, clearly talked about Home integration, and demo'd the camera-based tank game, all of which is a bit hard to come by. Nintendo haven't had any web-presence at all! What were they talking about? Sales figures? Devs don't really need to hear that! What about their online initiatives? They must have said something but not for our ears. They'll obviously announce more at consumer events, but we want to know now, dammit!

I agree. I think the stories have been pretty interesting so far. Just pointing out that people shouldn't expect too much in the way of game/sku/peripheral announcements at GDC, unless it ties in with development (eg Home, LBP)

Last year there were some high profile presentations (like Sony's with LBP's first showing) probably due to the "new" E3 being smaller, hence this year's sort of disappointment for some people. (I was kinda hoping for some more game info too)

Just wait until those technical presentations hit the net.

When will they hit the net and where? Do the GDC organizers put stuff online? Or do we have to google for specific presentations/powerpoints/papers?

It takes awhile (a month IIRC on average), but they're usually available through one of the GDC sites. The reason it takes so long is because the presentations have to go through each respective company's PR, and then they have to actually get around to sending the altered/acceptable power points or PDFs to the webmasters or whoever handles them.

You might also find them sooner on a particular company's website too, such as Microsoft or Valve or nVidia etc.

Until then I hope GDC-going B3D'ers post about the presentations they've attended. I've seen little info so far but the conference isn't over yet, guess they're busy watching/learning rather than posting.

I still havent read/seen any news about the CE2 demonstration and GDC is almost over

That was the one thing that had me anticipating too *sighs*

So, nothing today? What a lackluster show.

I guess I'll know next year, GDC sucks

This is the best GDC I've ever seen, hands down. There were so many interesting and useful sessions (without too many "sponsored by" advertisement sessions), I was very impressed. I had pretty low expectations coming in, but this year, the show has really lived up to its name as a conference for game developers.

IIRC last year was chalk full of goodies. MS, Sony and Nintendo had big keynotes, Home and LBP were revealed, everybody showed off their '07 lineups...didn't they?

The keynotes were big last year, but otherwise there wasn't much to write home about. I guess people looking for major announcements from the big three might be a little disappointed this year, but there are other events for that kind of thing.
