Gaikai coming to PS4 2014.

So now that Gaikai (cloud gaming) has been announced as coming to PS4 in 2014 and Vita in the future, is this affecting anyone's willingness to purchase physical PS3 games? I would assume that disc based games would probably be streamable on PS4 assuming you have the disc in the drive and that PS3 games bought digitally will just show up as playable almost anywhere.

For games like The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls, I'm seriously thinking long and hard about just buying them digitally so they will also be streamable on PS4 in theory from any PS4 I log onto (it would be pretty dumb otherwise).

Thoughts?

I'm not sure what if I go to a cabin in the woods , how will I play games I legaly purchased ?

In all seriousness , I bet you will pay a subscription to gakki monthly and get acess to the library of games.

So far they only announced it for the US for 2014. I wonder what the pricing will be for Gaikai services.

My thought it that you're confusing Gaikai with something else. As it stands now, there is zero relation to streaming games from PS3 to PS4. What was announced is Gaikai streaming of PS3 games to PS4, PS3 and eventually PSV via their Gaikai service (across the internet, the nebulous "Cloud"). This doesn't appear to have anything to do with local streaming.

EDIT

I misread your post. You're talking about using physical PS3 discs in the PS4 as verification of ownership and therefore proof to be allowed access to the Cloud version. Which I also think is incorrect. It will likely be a subscription service granting you access to the entire library of what's currently available. Netflix for gaming. There's nothing pointing to using local disks in any manner, particularly given how things are worded. If you were looking for this to be some form of BC for heavily invested PS3 owners I suspect you'll be disappointed. But perhaps in the future, especially for PS3 digital purchases with seamless and easy proof of ownership.

Cloud Gaming
SCEA also announced that PlayStation’s cloud gaming services will be available in 2014 beginning in the United States. The cloud gaming services will provide gamers on the PS4 and PS3 systems, followed by gamers on the PS Vita system, with immediate access to a catalog of critically acclaimed PS3 titles. These games will be streamed using Gaikai’s proprietary network technology to deliver amazing gameplay that is fast and responsive.

I wasn't referring to local streaming. Buy PS3 digital games now. Play PS3 digital games now. Buy PS4. Sell PS3 when Gaikai is up and running. Play PS3 games via streaming on PS4.

Now if you have a digital copy of a PS3 game, I don't see why it wouldn't stream to any PS3/PS4, not just your own. As for disc based games, I'd assume you'd need the disc in the system for authentication (I just dislike disks in general, it makes owning lots of games rather unweildy to keep around, have to worry about theft, etc...).

Most certainly a subscription service like NetFlix.

The interesting questions are what games ? Other client support ? How much ?

I saw Apple mentioned Made for iDevices game controller in iOS7. Here's praying for Gaikai for iOS.

Edit: Netflix is $8/month.

I'm going to assume sony will start with just vita / ps4 and move from there.

The real question is cost. But then again I remember how bad onlive was. So I hope sony is able ot offer better

*spin-off* Importance of Backward Compatibility Discussion

So apparently Gaikai will be streaming PS3 games to the Vita?

Shuhei Yoshida:
"Cloud gaming services are launching next year in the US so PlayStation 4 and Vita users will be able to play PlayStation 3 catalogue games even though there's no native compatibility on the system itself. That's just one example of how we can improve the system."

Was this announced in February?

Where is your linkie, ma friend ?

Oh you edited it in.

... Holy sheet.

I thought the reason the Vita wouldn't be supported was because you need a custom control scheme. Then again, that's probably why they won't be opening the floodgates for what games will be stream able. And of course, you'll likely only be limited to PSN purchases.

They will have to map the PS3 control schemes to Vita h/w, just like what they are doing for every PS4 game.

On the PS4, it's "forced" at submission time, means that a team has to go back and put in new controls before it can be certified. Also assumes that the game is on PSN in the first place.

Sony will offer several "default" control schemes for every Remote Play game, just as they do now. They even offer customizable control scheme.

A bit of brute force, but I guess it's necessary. I wonder if they'll make a new vita version with more PS4-like controls.

You can easily devise a default (with customisation/preference options) control scheme for Vita.

What I think will be most interesting is whether they will remaster some of their software, or emulate using dedicated rack-mounted PS3s (that we know to exist).

The advantage of recompiling and partly rewriting their own games is that it is a one time investment that will become easier to manage in the future. It has benefits either way: if you believe, as some do, that 'Netgamez' is the future, then being able to do so on ever increasingly powerful and efficient PC style CPU and GPUs specially designed to host multiple instances of the same games is a big win.

But if that doesn't turn out to be feasible or marketable on the short term, then you still have can make these run natively on PS4 much more easily as well.

This was already announced at the Sony E3 Press Conference and mentioned in the June 10th Press Release I linked to and quoted earlier:

It's pretty clear from that wording that their launch plan is Gaikai streaming of select PS3 games to PS4s and (funnily enough) PS3s, with it to be rolled out to Vita later that same year.

I wonder if they will start from the Greatest Hits (proven demand) or PS+ titles (supportive developers) or something else. ^_^

First party best sellers and critically acclaimed titles? As the publisher for those titles, licensing terms should be much easier to negotiate, I would imagine. I think PS+ titles (supportive developers as you put it) would probably be another ideal candidate. Either way it should be interesting.

I was looking at their job postings to see if they need an Infrastructure Architect or Analyst, as that would be a project I'd love to jump in on during the initial infrastructure design, expansion and rollout stages. They don't, at the moment, unfortunately.
