Future of 3D gaming and media *spawn

We'll need to lug a battery backpack around I guess.

... and also find a playground/car park/backyard big enough to fit a Goliath ^_^

Maybe, or maybe just a box that streams this stuff to the players. We'd just need the juice for the reciever, the display and whatever input devices we needed on our persons to transmit back to the box. With 4 or 5 detectors placed around the house we could have low-battery locators (like GPS) on wrist/head/ankle bands to detect our actions. From cheap single player boxes with one pair of glasses, to monsters that let 4 play at one time. Commercial units that do 32-64 for entertaining nights out. I'm sure the military would have even better.

One day...

Oh the bane of Sony. ^_^

I hope they make it into a platform of HMD plugins. I'm also interested in pass-through mode where I can see the outside world via a 3D camera. Too bad the battery life will be gone in no time. May the optics can help somehow ? :devilish:

Oh, you mean for augmented reality? Yeah, that's going to be pretty sweet I agree. Bright future ahead!

I hear you can also adjust stuff so you don't need glasses even if you do normally. I'm very curious to try this out. Probably a good thing if I can't anytime soon, because I'd want them. Imagine playing Tumble in 3D with these ... :D I know it sounds humble, but it would be totally crazy.

Yes, not just augmented reality applications. I think sensors such as retina tracking, viltaity stats, microphone, head tracking, etc. can be interesting too.

EDIT: Actually, battery and wireless tech to extend the platform will be useful as well.

How to use Sony Personal 3D Viewer Headset:

A passthrough mode would be superb (like the Midnight Eye manga)

Who Killed 3-D?

Not my title, but an interesting article on 3D and how it's doing in the movie business.

Good article. I think that consoles could be what lets 3D remain (and even prosper) this time around. Sony and Microsoft both regulate the titles on their platforms. The 3D can have a baseline quality they must meet.

Sadly I can't see them stopping the likes of Crytek from doing their 2.5D but if they did it would really help 3D grow into what it should be.

The 3D can have a baseline quality they must meet.
The days of console companies mandating minimum quality seem long behind us. They quite happily let low-quality, bugged software sell on their platforms. And there's no reason for MS to promote 3D. Sony may well ask for top 3D from their 1st parties but, beyond that, it's down to developers investing in 3D if they think it'll boost their sales. Which most won't, especially considering the cost, so maybe we'll get shoe-horned hacks like 2.5D as the best to hope for.

I had no idea it was that bad nowadays. Surely it can't be as bad as PC?

I had thought about the desire (or lack thereof) of MS to do it, and I came to the conclusion that they would, to keep up with Sony. Plus many multi-platform games if mandated by one platform to do certain things to make 3D better would likely translate into that automatically happening on the other platform.

I had no idea it was that bad nowadays.
Games launch with bugs that sometimes get patched, sometimes don't, and sometimes are killer. eg. Borderlands broken voice chat. Sony allowed it through their QA process and it never got fixed. I don't see any decent QA from the console companies at all, and it all comes down to the dev/publisher. Without even mandating a minimum 30 fps ot 720p, what reason is there to think they'll mandate a high quality 3D for a tiny niche?

I think the article really hammers down that 3D isn't just a quick value add to be tacked on, so hopefully the developers that think about doing it would think about doing it right, but the problem there is putting a lot of effort into a fairly small niche.

I know I'd rather a developer just skip it altogether and target making the best game they can, but I fear the next gen could start off with 3D checkbox wars even if consumers are indifferent about it.

Early tryouts and user impressions start to trickle in for Sony's HMD headset.

Doesn't make sense for me to copy all of them over. You can read them here yourself :):
The early ones start around page 11:

There is also a short discussion on the claimed 720p resolution in HMZ-T1 in the thread, and a short video interview from some old Sony man claiming that the HMZ-T1 is first of many that will follow next year.

Oh the bane of the strong Yen. The strong Yen has given Samsung a bigger market cap than Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp, Hitachi combined. I think we probably should recognize Japans tech companies are all struggling.

Yeah I really hope they continue on with the project, I'll be getting one when I can get my hand on one. The Playstation group, need to develop the HMD with 180 degrees FOV for full immersion.

I suspect someone will feed an live 3D video stream into this headset. ^_^

The video input is external to the unit anyway.
Should be possible to mock up an interesting outdoor gaming experience (Yes, yes, battery backpack included).

Would love them to make this into a platform since Sony's cost structure is too high. But their managers will be tempted to go premium. Hope they will have cheaper models soon.

If you try to have separate optics for each eye like the HMZ-T1 then filling the complete view of both eyes becomes very hard because the space the optics have to occupy tends to interfere.

The set is getting pretty positive impressions by even videophiles. Makes me regret buying the 27" 3D monitor a little. :-/ They cost about the same.

Ah well, am keeping a close eyes on the set. See if Sony will integrate PS3 with the HMD tighter (e.g., add head tracking, or even live 3D camera support). I already have a 3D Bloggie. Would be amazing if they do something for 3D Bloggie, HMD and Move altogether. :devilish:

Can't they just widen and curved the OLED display ? And use software scaling to compensate the curvature ?

I suppose the HMD can get bulky, but this one like Sensic xSight:

http://sensics.com/products/xSight/

It can get 120 degrees FOV while still weighing 350g. It seems pretty nice if it doesn't cost fourty grand.

But yeah their 180 degrees FOV solution the Sensic piSight is really bulky in the picture:

That offer 4k res, too bad review said you can see the stiches between LCDs. I am thinking they can use curved OLED instead of multiple LCDs.

It's screwed into his head!
