Future of 3D gaming and media *spawn

How can EyePet work in 3D with a 2D camera?!

Even in 2D it makes a guestimate of where the floor is, then projects 3D graphics into it with the guessed floor as a base, and a guess of objects that bound it. So they wouldn't have to change much more than just making the graphics (objects drawn by the game over the camera feed) in 3D.

I just bought a new camera by the way (WX10, we'll miss the H3 but it got sand in its engine), that happens to be able to take 3D shots, though it does it with only one lens. So slowly but steadily its getting time for a 3D display.

Gonna be a while still though.

Even in 2D it makes a guestimate of where the floor is,...
I meant combining 3D visuals with a 2D video feed. Surely that just looks a bit stupid and breaks the AR. "Oh, the 3D bits are made by computer." It'd look great with calibrated stereoscopic cameras and help increase realism, but mixing 3D graphics over a 2D video feed seems the very opposite of AR to me!

I remember that despite that, Garnett Lee called it one of the most convincing 3D effects he'd seen at E3 last year. Don't forget that now with the Move you interact with a 3D object in 3D space as well. And the video feed isn't particularly sharp anyway. ;)

I wonder if they need to convert the 2D video to 3D format on the fly. The video is low res and the only heavy weight work in EyePet is the hair rendering.

EDIT: Hmm... image is probably too noisy to do a good conversion.

Sony share a list of stereoscopic 3D titles and movies on the official blog:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011...-ps3-updated-list-of-all-3d-games-and-movies/

Didn't know some of them (e.g., Lights Out, EyePet) already support 3D. In total...
* 35 3D Blu-ray and PSN games (8 more coming soon)
* 18 3D digital movies
* 36 3D Blu-ray movies

... and 0 3D monitor. -_-

...that list for movies is such bullshit as it is almost the entire list since it also includes titles that haven't even been released. If you know how to import it is semi-accurate but if something is going to be posted on the US blog maybe it should reflect titles that can actually be purchased through US stores and aren't tied to manufacturer specific bundles. They could have also separated "out now" and "upcoming" the way they did for games.

Retrevo Pulse Report Predicts Big Drop in 3DTV Price Premium:
http://www.retrevo.com/content/blog...e-report-predicts-big-drop-3dtv-price-premium

A recent Retrevo study found that a high price premium is one of the most common reasons consumers cite for not buying a 3DTV. That barrier may soon vanish as a recent Retrevo Labs Pulse study shows a significant downward trend in the price premium of 47 – 50-inch 3DTVs over equivalent non-3D 1080p LED-LCD and Plasma TVs from top brands including Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG and others. The “best-fit” modeled analysis predicts the price premium which is currently around $400 (down from $900 a year ago) could drop as low as $150 – $200 just in time for the holiday shopping season.

...

Which ones have not been released yet ?
The article says they chose the movies from http://www.blu-ray.com/3d/

You'll find even more upcoming/unreleased 3D Blu-ray movies from that blu-ray.com link.

Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Shrek 3D – The Complete Collection
The Lion King
Beauty and the Beast
Michael Jackson’s This is It

I read what I quoted...which is why I specifically said they should have separated the movies into out now and upcoming the way they did the games...they probably should have even asterisked the titles that you can only get by purchasing specific hardware which it would seem they gave SOME thought to since they didn't include Avatar.

I can't find the 2 Harry Potter movies in 3D Blu-ray. I think they are being worked on.
I can find 3D Blu-ray for [strike]Beauty and the Beast[/strike], Nightmare Before Christmas, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Michael Jackson.
Didn't try the rest. ^_^

Some of the 3D Blu-ray movies may be or was exclusive to certain 3DTV vendors only though.

EDIT:
Ok... Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are due this fall. But Shrek The Complete Collection should be available now on 3D Blu-ray.

A lot of this were filmed in 2D, so surely they're rather rubbish in 3D?

Yes sir...
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118025592?refCatId=13

Work has begun on "Half-Blood Prince," the sixth pic in the franchise. Prime Focus London is the lead facility on the conversion, with additional work being done by company's Hollywood and India facilities.

Prime Focus and Warner took a lot of heat after the 3D version of "Clash of the Titans" was rushed; in contrast, work on the conversion of "Half-Blood Prince" is proceeding methodically. Including Warner's plans to put both parts of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in 3D, all four "Potter" pics directed by David Yates have been in line for 3D conversion.

Yates is still in post on "Deathly Hallows" and will not turn his attention to the 3D back titles until early 2011. However, the Prime Focus process is flexible enough to permit the director to view shots and ask for adjustments after most work on those shots has been done.

Work was stopped on the stereoscopic conversion of "Deathly Hallows: Part 1" when it became apparent the 3D version would not be ready in time for the Nov. 19 release date (Daily Variety, Oct. 11). Warner has not, however, ruled out completing the conversion later.

Studio is keeping mum about its 3D plans for the "Potter" backtitles, including street dates for 3D homevideo and whether there will be a theatrical re-release for the series. With the final four "Potter" pics in 3D, however, conversion of the earlier pics seems likely. Just as Yates has had creative oversight of 3D on his pics, conversion of the earlier titles would likely require the involvement of Chris Columbus, Mike Newell and Alfonso Cuaron, who directed the first four in the series.

And the Lion King?! It's a 2D cartoon! Unless they want the 3Dified version to look like a kid's diorama, turning it 3D makes no sense. With movements like these, I'm hoping 3D fails - the only reason the studios want it is to resell content. May as well digital increase the saturation of movies and rerelease them Digitally Enriched or some crap.

I believe you'll find that Shrek is a Samsung or somebody's exclusive... the roll is not towards you but towards the exclusivity ridiculousness! Also, I think Bolt is only available as a resold import.

Shifty, you will actually find that many of the title in that list are 2D -> 3D conversions that look rather bad like Clash of the Titans...ugh...

patsu, keep in mind that I actually HAVE a 3D setup so it isn't like I don't want more stuff to come! Of that list they posted I have maybe 8 titles I don't know if that is good or bad for 3D as a whole I'm guessing it isn't great judging by the recent survey you posted

LG goes into portable gaming with Optimus 3D and games from Gameloft

LG Enters Expanding Portable Gaming Market With Optimus 3D And High Quality Games From Gameloft

SEOUL--(Korea Newswire) -- LG Electronics (LG) announced its entry into the expanding handheld gaming market with the launch of the LG Optimus 3D in Korea and the introduction of 17 Stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) games from leading mobile video game developer Gameloft.

“The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Today’s smartphones have the horsepower to compete with the best portable gaming devices and LG Optimus 3D is our proof. We think 3D is the natural next step in portable entertainment and LG is eager to throw its hat in the ring with the Optimus 3D and Gameloft’s ‘must-be-seen-to-be-believed’ titles.”

Full versions of three Gameloft titles will come pre-installed on new Optimus 3D smartphones with the remaining S-3D games available for download at significantly discounted prices for LG Optimus 3D owners. The three included S-3D games are Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, N.O.V.A. -- Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance and Let’s Golf! 2. The games received wide acclaim in their original versions and were specifically chosen for the realism and immersive game play they would provide when digitally re-mastered into S-3D.

“The most recent data shows iOS and Android devices capturing a growing part of the portable gaming market by revenue,” said Michel Guillemot, President of Gameloft. “With the next generation of smartphones offering 3D capabilities, the bar has been raised to a new height. On the Optimus 3D, we’re able to offer our most popular titles to an entirely new audience at very competitive price points.”

Fourteen additional Gameloft S-3D games will be available for download via the 3D Games icon on the LG Optimus 3D. Titles such as: Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles, James Cameron’s Avatar, Ultimate Spider Man: Total Mayhem, GT Racing: Motor Academy, Shrek Kart, Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, Real Football 2011, Star Battalion, N.O.V.A. 2 -- Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance, Dungeon Hunter 2, Fishing Kings, BackStab, Eternal Legacy and Shadow Guardian will be offered to Optimus 3D owners at half price for the first three months. Archer Craft, an LG produced S-3D game, will also be available as a free download.

“The convergence of communication, the internet and entertainment all on one device was what made smartphones so popular so quickly,” added LG’s Dr. Park. “3D on smartphones is what color was to television – it introduces an entirely new level of viewing enjoyment. Playing a Gameloft 3D title on an LG Optimus 3D is simply taking that enjoyment and multiplying it by a factor of ten. It’s an experience that’s guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face.”

The LG Optimus 3D, the world’s first smartphone with full S-3D and Tri-Dual (dual-core, dual-channel, dual-memory) architecture, was designed for maximum performance and efficiency, ideal for the high processing power required for gaming and viewing videos. The LG Optimus 3D is currently being introduced in over 60 markets around the world. The preloaded games will be available from launch, with further downloadable games rolling out over the coming months through a dedicated 3D Games icon.

Stereo 3D gaming on an android smartphone, with an initial library of 20 titles.
Watch out Nintendo, it has begun.

2D to 3D cartoon conversion should be easier than 2D to 3D life-action conversion. It's a controversial topic nonetheless: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/debate-waging-over-2d-3d-22262

Yap I mentioned it above. The exclusivity is offered by the studios. Some of them should run-out already.

It will take a long time since content creation is a lengthy process. It's a risk an early adopter should know. Have you tried any of the 3D broadcast ?

I have some 3D movies too. Most of my initial usage will be my own 3D material (Travel videos and photos !) plus games. Personally I prefer 3D documentary if someone will make one. ^_^

Do you mean documentaries in 3D or a documentary about 3D in 3D? If the former the Grand Canyon 3D title has, to me, one of the best menus the bubbles are pretty amazing. The only exclusive that I believe has run its course has been Coraline; I believe the rest are at least until (through?) 2012.

I literally only have Comcast cable TV for the discount it offers on the crazy expensive "Extreme 50"(50Mbps) so I don't even have a DVR or a box. Before I sold my DLP I had the coax plugged directly into the TV and IF I ever watched live tv I only watched what was available clear qam (this is the reason we don't mind purchasing tv shows from the 360 or Netflix streaming). I say all that to say the only 3D content to which I have consistent access is BD and games. I wouldn't mind if the ESPN app on the 360 offered 3D and I have yet to look at much of the 3D content from VUDU on my BD player but when I last checked they had just started offering 3D and had little (read: one title) available.

Avatar 3D was a Panasonic exclusive. I remember Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was an exclusive for a short time too, but I'm not sure.

I meant programs like National Geographic documentaries in 3D ! ^_^
The 3D demoes show very good promise in underwater and wildlife videos.

There are about 20 3D movies on Vudu now. Bolt is up there.

For 2D to 3D conversion, I think the big one is Star Wars:
http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/star-wars-trilogy-blu-ray-and-3d-re-release-details-emerge.php
(Actually I only want episode 4 to 6. They can keep 1-3. :devilish:)

Then I think you would love IMAX: Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk and IMAX: Under the Sea if you haven't already seen them.

Yeah... look forward to check them out.

I bought 3D Bloggie today for my Europe trip. Didn't know it can be used as a webcam for Mac and PC. In 3D mode, iChat will show the captured images side-by-side.

Should be able to get a 3D Monitor by September 6. Sony's 24" monitor comes with R3 bundled. If I can find a 27" 3D monitor first, I'll bite.

The setup should satisfy my simple 3D needs until the technology and content mature (or the trend fizzle out ! ^_^).
