Samsung Series 9 3D LED monitor arrives (27")

Samsung has announced the arrival of its most stylish monitor yet – the Samsung Series 9 3D LED Monitor.
The TA950 monitor has a design that's said to take its inspiration from origami, which is a fancy way of saying that the monitor appears paper thin. The idea looks like it has worked as the device was given the "Innovation Design and Engineering Awards" when it was first revealed at CES 2011.

The unit looks very nice. Not in US yet, but it seems to be on sale in European and Asia already. Grrr.... my office PS3 monitor died today. Need to get hold of this SKU fast.

Really? Europe's normally last on TV tech AFAIK.

Gosh Googling, turns out it's available only from Harrods and Selfridges, for £650. Looks an excellent gaming monitor for those who can afford it, although I dislike the off-centre stand. Seems like design for design's sake sacrificing functionality in tilt/rotate.

Report: 3DTV Active Usage On The Decline:
http://gamasutra.com/view/news/35430/Report_3DTV_Active_Usage_On_The_Decline.php

A new report coming out of the UK paints a dim picture for 3DTV home adoption, suggesting that while device purchases will by necessity go up, the percentage of those consuming 3D content is on the decline.

That's according to forecasts by Informa Telecoms & Media, which predicts that fewer than half of the 11 million UK homes expected to have a 3D-enabled TV in 2016 will be active users of the technology.

This comes in sharp contrast to 2010 trends the company observed, where 90 percent of 3DTV-enabled homes actively used the technology. According to Informa, that percentage was high because those who owned 3DTVs were early adopters, who are more likely to pay for 3D content. As time wears on and most manufacturers incorporate 3D into their sets by default, that percentage will continuously decline.

Meanwhile, this early adopter can't find the 3D monitor he wants.

3d on a small screen at a large distance is fail ... duh.

The killer app for 3D will be cheap HMDs ... with PC gamers probably being the only large group of early and enthusiastic adopters of shutter based screens.

IMO , with a good DLP rig, don't really play in 2D . I rather not watch 3d movies (usually shot bad), but playing always 3D.

Look for rear projection rigs on youtube, you can also see smaller sized dark RP foils among those.

Pretty much this. I've seen about 4 or 5 3d movies in theaters at this point. The first time around the gimmick was pretty impressive (Beowulf), but with each subsequent overpriced visit to another 3d presentation I got more and more disappointed (I prefer Avatar in good old 2d because that movie is just so vibrant and colorful). Usually movies don't really go a for a lot of depth anyway, and even stuff that is actually real on-screen often looks like a plastic toy or a cheap special effect in 3d. The huge loss of luminance is another big detriment. Everything looks dark and dull in with the stupid glasses.
For me it's pretty much like this: if the 3d works properly I hardly even notice it, in the many cases where it does not it's nothing more than an unpleasant distraction that comes at a premium price point.

It can be a lot of fun in games though. They look fake one way or the other anyway.

How does it compare to HD content usage on HDTVs? Im not sure if the figures should be taken as a positive or negative. There was always going to be a significant decline in active usage im not sure anyone could reasonably expect otherwise.

Bah... treat it as a data point. Proper interpretation can come later with more numbers and news.

I am more fed up with them not releasing 3D monitors. It seems that Acer's and ASUS's 27" monitors are extremely limited in supply. Many people on the net can't find them. My only hope now is the Samsung one.

Not impressed by 3D movies ? You haven't watched the underwater documentaries have you ? :devilish:

News on Passive 3D TV...

Sub $1,000 47-inch 3DTV From Westinghouse Announced:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/High-Def_Retailing/Industry_Trends/3D/Sub_$1,000_47-inch_3DTV_From_Westinghouse_Announced/7156

Enter Westinghouse, who this week announced a sub-$1000 (it MSRPs for $1,200, but will street for less) 3DTV that uses polarized, passive glasses. In fact, each of the 47-inch W47S2TCDs will ship with four pairs of passive glasses, and if you want more, just keep the ones you get when you see a 3D movie at your local cinema, because those should work as well.

What's the catch?

Well, as we mentioned briefly above, active shutter glasses are the only way to get full HD 1080p for both eyes in stereo 3D. Passive technologies display both frames at the very same time (rather than rapidly alternating them when using active technology), so there is a resolution reduction over all. On the other side of the coin, passive glasses technologies should allow for better pans and movement on screen, without jarring, jittery feeling that can accompany active shutter worlds.

LG Study: 80% Of Consumers Pick Passive 3D:
http://www.twice.com/article/470409-LG_Study_80_Of_Consumers_Pick_Passive_3D.php

LG Electronics released findings from a recent consumer study that showed 80 percent of consumers prefer the 3DTV experience wearing passive glasses over more established, and more expensive, active-shutter 3DTV glasses.

The study was conducted for LG by market research firm Morpace last May, measuring an LG Cinema 3D HD LCD TV against active-shutter-glasses based LCD TVs from Sony and Samsung.
