From the Rumor Mill: X360 Production Stopped Relaunch In February

If you watched the Money Program piece on the XBOX 360 launch you'd know that they are both flying and shipping consoles to the various locations - flying them is quick, but the volumes will be small and this is also expensive, so they are probably going to keep them to a minimum; shipping will be very big volumes, but this is going to be slow. Things are likely to remain trickle, until the shipping volumes actually start to come in to each of the regions.

QFT. Although AFAIK they used boats for the first produced consoles and they are using planes from now on until they have enough stock...

QFT? You might want to check who's forum you are posting in.
Davey, QFT = "Quoted For Truth". You need to keep up with forum lingo, man. :p

When I first saw it I thought it stood for "Quit Fucking Talking".

I don't think it's the case that they are stopping production at all. I think other than a region setting for each console, the only difference is the power supply included. I'm sure either of the two plants can produce units for either any regioon.

The only scenario that I can think could be plausible is if there was some kind of yield issue that occured before launch which led to having fewer units for launch.

Holding some stock for replacements (in this scenario) may have just been a cautionary measure for any additional unforeseen problems in the wild (eg. the overheating consoles - the scale of which I think has been exagerrated).

So it could be a case of the only systems that get shipped out from now until Feb is the ones that have already been manufactured (minus the held stock) until the "problem" is resolved.

Still seems a bit far-fetched but we'll find out if supply trickles to an unusual low over the coming weeks.

I'd have thought that would be "quit fucking trolling".

Anyway, the other point is that when the shipping volume do come in these are actually likely to be from the first production run, so it wouldn't be indicative of anything.

If you went though what I went through a week ago, you would believe it....So at the end of the day, I did feel that MS personally tried to shaft me...

Which is your problem.

... and I've been trying to find out why this is the case. High demand? False demand? Manufacturing problems? We'll find out at the end of this week.

Hey, MS just doesn't like you.. It's that personal.

Case is never closed when we're dealing with PR hacks with their own definitions. [Kind of reminds me of the Bush Administration saying, "We don't torture prisoners". Well, what's your definition of "torture"?] They can easily divert a few thousand systems from the other territories to cover the U.S. supply problem. However, is that one or two units per BIG retailer? If Walmart got 14 units at launch, they should at least get 7 or 8 for the resupply. One or two consoles won't cut it in my book.

And your book is the only meter that matters.

Seriously, chill out a bit. If this rumor is true it will pan out, if false same thing...it's kind of silly to be so vocal in defending it before the facts are in.

Small tidbit from Zero hour:

Moore also shed some light of Microsoft’s strategy for the next few weeks before the end of the year:

“Our goal is to make as many consoles as we can. We’ve got two factories working 24 hours a day. We’ve got air freight running as well as boats, because you can get more units on boats. All we can do is make them as fast as we can and ship them as fast as we can.â€￾

So it seems they're also using boats for newer units...

If there was a "defect with the console" then you wouldn't think they would be launching in the two markets that are yet to launch knowing that. The Europe launch is all set to go tomorrow, and there's no indication of Japan halting.
The European luanch numbers seem very down on what they were 'supposed' to be though. I can imagine this rumour is valid if they're getting a high failure rate at plant. It could be that say 1 in 2 XB360's is failing testing. A small percentage of those scrape through and find their way into customers, who then get the problems we're hearing about. The cost of the hardware is thus effectively doubled, and those kinds of losses are too much. So MS close down the manufacturing until the problems can be ironed out.

Certainly plausible. We'd obviously need real numbers of defects and whatnot to conclude this. Numbers are scarce but given XB360 was a sell-out but it hasn't been publicly announced how wonderfully well XB360 has sold 2 million units in one week, so I can only assume numbers out there weren't high enough to get excited about. Seems enough reason to rate this rumour as improbable, bordering plausible, rather than outright poppycock.

I imagine that they will be waiting until they have launched in all markets before they start releasing the smiley PR about the succesful launch and the number of units sold.

I assumed it was bullshit as well, but it was a Target Corporation rep. Either they say, "I don't know" or "Yes" or "No". But her description was pretty detailed. Also, the initial launch shipment was a paltry 275,000 units. Thus, you won't hear Microsoft brag about launch numbers, but only "holiday sales."

Expect "holiday sales" to be less than 750,000 in North America. Microsoft just handed Sony the next generation on a silver platter. Someone should tell Microsoft that the whole point in launching first is to have more systems sold than the competition. Microsoft wanted 10 million units sold before the PS3 launched. They'll be lucky to get 5 million at this rate.

I don't believe that, demand still seemed much lower than on the PS2 launch, there's no way 360 launched with 270,000 units.

This rumour, if true, pretty much explains what Gates said some days ago: "If we lose this round (videogames market), we´ll play it again". Maybe he was aware of the problems with the 360 (if they effectively exist).
And I´m not happy with this possibility. Competition is what took consoles to the level we´re seeing "today" (360, PS3 and Revolution).

This sound WAY out there. If there a defect with all the consoles, why's mine running perfectly? Where's my recall?? I live in NA...

As far as I know MS has 2 plants in China making all these things, how can it only be related to NA? It makes no sense. If it was a component problem, like the CPU or GPU it would spread across all regions, if it was a problem with the plants in china it would only affect one, would not require "halting production" and would also effect al lregions equally.

BTW: On the day of launch 1bestbuy, and 1 futureshop employee told me the US took 20% of canada's 360's so that's whey there were so many shortages... these guys say some of the stupidest shit I've ever heard....

According to a Target rep, Microsoft is having problems with the Xbox 360......(snip)QUOTE]

I'm sorry, so why is it this "Target Rep" (who is so high up) could not give you the same "inside info" on where to go to get your XBOX 360?

But he/she is more than available to give you the inside scoop on defective units? This is one reason why I think this is nothing more than a rumor. The other reason is my 360 has been working fine online and off. I play numerous people online and in Basket Ball leagues and no one is complaining.

I say the rumor is false, and good luck on purchasing one. That is if you still want it.

Peace.
