Formula 1 - 2009 Season

The big weird front wing, I can live with. But that real wing is just plain fugly, even the cars own mother cant love that.

Yeah, the rear wing is really awkward, but if it helps with producing less polluted airflow to the car following, it's all good by me.

Edit: bad form inlining that image from autosport

anyway, it's only a little bit longer than the front wing Williams had in 2001, relatively speaking of course

A bit? even relative its alot longer I think. Its now sticking out of the wheels while it used to be around half way of the wheels. Maybe Iceland gave Bernie all the money people lost on their Icesave account to host a GP and to make it work Bernie had to make all the cars snowplow proof.

Seems that worked

The sidepods look weird. All bulky and cancerous.
I'm not convinced that the sidepod structures are actually that different from the previous generation, in reality. What you are seeing here is them fully exposed and clean, so you can see all the cures - the extended flip-ups before the rear wheels and the additionaly aero dynamic components down the sides of the cars under the old rules tends to obscure the true shape of the sidepods down the the rear of the car.

What I find interesting is how marked the tapering is to the back of the car when you look at an overhead shot. Obviously this is little different from last years cars, but exactly how much they really tapered in was quite obscured by the additional bodywork there, purely for aero purposes.

Yeah, I saw that overhead shot. Is that what Autosport referred to as coke-bottle shaped?

Okay. I really like how the nose and front end is really clean and devoid of winglets and other crap. Front wing looks OK, doesn't look like a big fat lip as it would have if a front wing bridge had been allowed.

Car Launches:
Toyota is next, launching on the 15th, then McLaren the next day, Renault and Williams on the 19th and BMW on the 20th. After that, Red Bull on the 9th of February and Toro Rosso and Force India later (Vijay said March which is quite late indeed).

The barcode is for Marlboro because tobacco ads are not allowed in the EU. It was introduced in 2007, I think. Or at least they didn't have the Marlboro brand on in 2006 in the countries that didn't allow tobacco ads in 2006, but the barcode as it is now came in 2007.

Renault have failed the official crash test on the new car which is a little embarassing, but they are expected to be OK for the start of the season.

Same happened in 2005 and they won both titles that year.

The designers and engineers are pushing the limits.
