Formula 1 - 2009 Season

Heh, thanks :)

Yeah, Adrian Newey's innovative push-rod system. Heh, seems like it's not worth as much as a bigger diffuser.

The practice is on, Räikkönen fastest atm, watching BBC stream via proxy :)

Let's hope McHamiltons problems continue and we'll get to see a little less of his fathers teeth on the TV, and he might actually learn a little humility too

Aaand the results of first practice session

Well its only practice so I dont think this will be much of a indicator for real speed yet. I mean, Kovi way above Hamilton? BMW's in the mid field? Force India in the mid field? Williams on top? Given what we've seen in testing some teams should defenitly be up a bit more and some down a bit more.

Well, the 2nd practice result is more believable.... Kovi at 17 and Hamilton at 18 place.. almost the same time between the two... :)

If Kovi use the 1st practice time, he would be placed 16 on the 2nd practice... so yes, I believe there's a problem with McLaren package.

Hamilton would likely have better racing pace compared to Kovi, but unless McLaren hiding something, they would likely finish at mid to bottom.

Btw, does anyone knows whether they can use KERS at free practice. If they can, do any of those team use it? From the free practice result, I think McLaren badly needs it.

Not sure if they are allowed to use it but I cant see why it wouldnt be allowed. Not sure if it would help Mclaren alot if they had it. Mclaren's problem seems to be someone did a very poor job at the aerodynamic package. KERS isnt going to help alot. They might win a bit on the straights but they could just as well use it again because of the extra weight which will have a even bigger impact as they have problems with their aero.

Congrats to Button. Pretty much like the practice sessions. The race tomorrow generally have lots of retirements so it will still be interesting. Looking forward to it.

Toyota qualifying disqualified due illegal back wings
Williams left protest regarding Ferrari & Red Bull aerodynamics
this is getting interesting :p

(have only finnish sources for these news atm)

Williams have withdrawn their protests "in the interest of the sport". Toyota's times have been deleted, Hamilton has been given a penalty for changing something, I guess it's the gearbox?

Basically, double decker diffuser trumps pull-rod suspension which trumps KERS. Brawn are heavier than all the cars up until Heidfeld in P9. Piquet is the heaviest because he is a shitty qualifier and a better racer.

Well done, Button and Barrichello and Brawn. The quali was close and really interesting and I cannot wait for tomorrow.

Hamilton in a slow car, this will be a big test for him.

Yeah, Hamiltons gearbox got changed, and according to current rules 1 gearbox has to last 4 races, if it's changed you get +5 places penalty

Yup, because now that I think about it they can change engines without penalty except for each change after the 8th engine.

interesting engineering choice for next season if they indeed keep the rule about championship being decided by the amount of wins and the rule about 8 free engine changes...

Design an engine that lasts for 1 gp only for the primary driver, win each 8 first races and change engine every time. Then just try to get some extra points in the other races for the constructors title. Have a durable engine for the other driver.

That is a good point. The freezed engines should help mitigate it, though.

Summing up of the first ~15 laps

Barrichello screwed up in start, caused havoc and several crashes, including Kovalainens crash who had to quit the race
He also crashed Kimi to get past him

The controversial diffusors work really well, they're really, really fast all of them

Supersofts were a big mistake, everyone with them had to come to pits several laps earlier than planned to switch them off
