Formula 1 - 2008 Season

Im sure teams build their engines so that they can deliver 100% of their capabilities for 2 races. When you could use 1 engine every race they also didnt suddenly lose a couple of thenths after half the race, this is basically the same only instead of lasting 2 hours or so they now build them to last 4 (race engines arnt really build on distance but on time they have to run).

Well, I wouldn't be so sure. Actually all top 3 teams turned down the revs on their engines before the end of the first race. Actually Ferraris started saving their engines already before the first pit stop! And I'm not blaming them, one Ferrari engine did in fact blow up in Malaysia, I think it was one of them Toro Rossos'.
Basically what is happening is you want your engine to be as light as possible while still delivering maximum performance, hence reliability suffers.

But you could counter that by setting more wing.

Thus increasing drag :)

I wonder how good the computer models are getting now? I'm sure no team would deploy an aero package based on virtual wind tunnel tests only. I could be wrong!

You know how F1 cars are looking more and more insects like? I would be really cool to come up with a genetic model for an F1 car - perhaps a segmented approach based on Hox genes and then breed them with mutation. Those that don't conform to the FIA regs are stillborn :) Then apply environmental pressure by running wind tunnel/race simulations and keep the best performers.

There will be a rule change next year concerning the amount of wing and winglets you can run. Anyone have more information? I could go search the FIA page, but I am lazy. :D

Dont know for sure but they probably cant beat real life. Remember how last years honda was a dog? that was because their windtunnel wasnt calibrated right so you get wrong results. Probably the same with computer models, if you do something wrong on the calibrating your screwed. Also there are probably factors that you cant measure in a windtunnel or a computermodel like the track, other cars, wind direction etc. Well, you could implement most in a computer model but not in a windtunnel.

If i remember correct total downforce has the be decreased by 50%. Not sure about the winglets but I believe most of them have to go. Personally I dont mind, I liked how the early 90's cars looked so bring them back. Also it would be cool to see much wider cars again. Cars have been getting much less wide over the years.

Manager defends Schumacher's two-wheel hobby

Michael Schumacher's manager has played down fears about the retired seven-time world champion's new foray into the world of semi-professional motorcycle racing.

It was reported recently that the German made his amateur debut at the Pannonia-Ring in Hungary.

It has now emerged that Schumacher, 39, was again in action while the Formula One world focused on the Malaysian Grand Prix over the Easter weekend.

His latest races were at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain, Bild newspaper reports.

His former Ferrari team boss and friend Jean Todt said last weekend that he 'absolutely' does not support Schumacher's potentially dangerous new hobby.

But Schumacher's long-time manager, Willi Weber, reacted: "I have no fears for him.

"He always knows what he is doing and what risks he can take.

"Just like in Formula One, anything can go wrong, but a Michael Schumacher leaves nothing to chance," he added.

Schumacher, meanwhile, has been very competitive in his two amateur rides so far, causing speculation to linger that his professional racing return could be on two wheels.

"Quite honestly, it is still too early to answer that," Weber said when asked if MotoGP could be the German legend's goal.

Apparently, Schumacher ended third in the race. Not bad for his first stint I say. :D

*edit* OMW.. I see he actually won his second race. :) Awesome Michael.

Schumi wins motorbike race

Berlin - Seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher followed up the third-place on his motorbike race debut in Hungary last week with first place in Barcelona.

It is a bold departure to see Schumacher photographed in German tabloid Bild wearing a leather biker outfit in the pits rather than the familiar red of his former Formula One team Ferarri.

But the 39-year-old German is proving he is just as determined on two wheels as he is on four.

The German came out top in a 14-lap race in Spain last weekend to follow up his third place in a pro-amateur race in Hungary the week before.

Schumacher has become involved with motorbike racing after impressing 2007 MotoGP world champion Australian Casey Stoner last November.

Having often thought of Max as someone who acts like a school headmaster I would have bet a large wager it would have been the teacher / pupil games with the prostitutes and not this. Personally I'd "plump" for the 5 nurses one patient scenario if it is was my £2500.

I can imagine the smirk that Ron Dennis has on his face currently. :)

Very good but still not resembling reality. We don't rely on those, used only for testing and pre-development work or to check out fresh ideas before building a prototype of something.

Not F1 related but van den brink designs (the guy who designed the 599 based GTO) says their car will be the first commercial car to go into production (well, if you can call 5 cars production :D) without being tested in a windtunnel and only based on CFD models. The Aston martin DBR9 is designed that way too and that managed to win le mans on its first try.

Mosley really should have the common decency to resign for the good on the sport. Preferrably before the Bahrain Race so as not to tarnish the name of Formula 1 any more.

I can only imagine next step is sponsors of motorsports under FIA will start to retreat if he doesn't resign and that won't do anyone any good.

I think it's the nazi part of the sadomasochistic nazi orgy that stands out in sponsors' minds.

They were talking about "bringing the sport into disrepute" a year ago when Raikkonen was getting pissed with his mates and falling out of nightclubs drunk. That's pretty normal compared to Mosely's Nazi hooker S&M orgy. Yeah, your private life is your private life, but when it becomes public, it reflects on your working life too, and the FIA and the sport's sponsors might not wish to be connected to nazi hooker S&M orgies.
