Formula 1 - 2008 Season

A pity. I quite enjoy Top Gear but unfortunately Formula 1 bores me to tears.

Racing of any type just doesn't appeal to me and that goes for games too - the notable exception being Super Mario Kart!

It would be interesting if more of the Formula 1 drivers did the Top Gear test lap, however...

I doubt they are going to replace the Top Gear stuff with F1 stuff, but I think there will be a little overlap and cross-referencing.

Apparently there have been outcry's to get Hampster commentating, or involved in some way - Clarkson is a big F1 fan as well, so I could see them trying to use some of the TG team (i.e. Clarkson doing the intros and interviews etc.). Its a shame that I'll miss all of that (as well as the Feetwood Mac intro theme).

However, whatever does happen I hope Martin goes over to the BEEB to continue commenting and TSN over in Canada still uses the UK commentry feed as they do now. James Allen won't be missed, but Brundle would be.

Dont think so. Clarkson doesnt care much about f1 either if you watch his topgear comments on it.
I don't think thats correct. He's a big fan (I'm reading a Clarkson book at the moment and one of the stories is about him trying to find a bar in East Germany so he can watch a GP...).

He is a fan, but a frustrated one, as many have been and many continue to be.

I agree with Dave regarding Brundle, he is great. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the BBC brought him over.

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought: "I hope that means Martin Brundle isn't out of a job commentating on F1". I've been watching motor racing for the last 25 years, and I think Brundle is without a doubt the best and most knowledgeable commentator I've ever heard.

clarkson is a fan captain slow and the hampster arnt

dream team:

would love to hear the banter between murray + clarkson

Massa leads all-Ferrari front row at Sepang

Felipe Massa took a commanding pole position for Ferrari in the Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying.

The Brazilian, who was also on pole at Sepang a year ago, was almost half a second faster than teammate Kimi Raikkonen as the Ferraris secured both front row positions.

The McLarens had to settle for the second row, with Heikki Kovalainen beating Lewis Hamilton to third by 0.096 seconds.

Massa was fastest on both runs in Q3, and although Raikkonen briefly edged ahead of him with his second lap, the Brazilian responded with a 1:35.748 to comfortably take pole position.

Hamilton was never a contender for pole, and momentarily lost fourth place to BMW's Robert Kubica before getting back on row two with his final lap.

Toyota's Jarno Trulli - who was fastest of all in Q1 - took an impressive fifth on the grid, pushing Kubica back to sixth, one place ahead of teammate Nick Heidfeld, in the closing seconds.

Mark Webber secured eighth for Red Bull, while teammate David Coulthard was 12th after his troubled start to the weekend.

Last year's Sepang winner Fernando Alonso (Renault) and Trulli's Toyota teammate Timo Glock will start ninth and 10th.

Outside the top ten, Melbourne podium finishers Williams had an extremely disappointing session. Nico Rosberg could do no better than 16th place, while his teammate Kazuki Nakajima will start last of all.

The Japanese driver was already facing a ten-place grid penalty for taking Kubica out of the Australian Grand Prix while behind the safety car, and only managed 18th place in qualifying today.

Despite being much closer to teammate Alonso's pace than he had been in Australia, Nelson Piquet missed out on a top ten spot. He was 0.4 seconds slower than Alonso in Q2 and will start 13th.

The two Hondas also departed in Q2, although they continued to show promising form as 11th-placed Jenson Button missed a Q3 spot by just 0.068 seconds. Rubens Barrichello was four tenths of a second slower and put the second Honda 14th on the grid.

Sebastian Vettel failed to repeat his impressive Melbourne qualifying form for Toro Rosso and was only 15th. His teammate Sebastien Bourdais was eliminated in Q1 again. The Frenchman ended up 19th after going off the road at Turn 4 on his flying lap.

Both Force Indias and both Super Aguris were also knocked out early. Giancarlo Fisichella came extremely close to making the Q2 cut, moving up to 16th in the closing seconds of Q1 only to be pushed back down by Barrichello moments later.

Adrian Sutil continued to trail teammate Fisichella, lapping 0.8 seconds slower and qualifying only 21st, between Aguri duo Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson.

Ferrari a lot faster again but it's supposed to rain tomorrow and if it does then anyone can do it.

At least Ferrari seem to have few problems this weekend.

Well, Trulli has been an exceptional qualifying driver in the past years too... Only to lead the slow moving "Trulli train" of vehicles behind the few leading drivers throughout the race.

Good performance by Kovalainen, beating Hamilton in his second race with the McLaren.

I suppose barring any technical problems or another safety car driven by Lewis' dad or whatever, Massa will win this one. I expect Kimi to have an eventless race right behind Massa, and Kovalainen taking the third place and being quite happy with it, telling you that he was able to keep up with the ferraris for first three laps but then they actually started driving.

Well, unless of course there will be rain... With rain there will be a circus. A lion will win and an elephant will become second. Fisichella will take his first podium with Force India and Glock will do a toeless lutz (a counter-rotated edge jump with a takeoff from the back outside edge of the left rear tire and landing on the back outside edge of the right rear tire) after Hamiltons' last pit stop.

Kimi's performance in Q2 was so good that, he might have a heavier car than Massa. I predict Kimi's victory! and possible rain wouldn't harm him, because he is better than Massa on a wet track. If both Ferraris finish, then I would assume that the third place fight will be the most interesting thing to watch.

They were driving incredibly slowly during their in lap. Fully deserved penalty, it looked very dangerous.

FIA should make a minimum allowed speed during post Q3 in lap.

One more reason why pit lane should be placed such that it would start right *after* the finish lane.

If the weather is poor, with a probable multi-collision start followed by 5 laps of the safety car does starting from the pit lane become an option for McL. ? :)

All that's in the past now. Malaysia is coming upon us rapidly and after the disaster I had at predicting last time, please do not look back - spare my blushes, I'm going to have another stab at it.

Hamilton
Kovaleinen
Kubica/Heidfield ( can't make my mind up)

It's going to be hot again and I don't think the Ferrari's will last as 1 week is probably not enough time to sort out their current problems. No doubt they will be fast again though.
Well you got 2/3 right of the podium, but the winner is the most important :)

Haha

Great race from Raikkonen, it's a pity Massa made a mistake as Ferrari needs those constructor points from him too.

Massa sucks, he can spin right out of F1 for all I care. Kimi I think is more consistent and has better mental strength than Felipe, and a stronger urge to win.

Trulli did a great job and it is awesome to see Toyota getting some results for a change.

Raikkonen shines for Ferrari

It may not have been the most entertaining of races for the fans, but for Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari his dominant Malaysian Grand Prix victory is just what he needed following the disappointment in Melbourne a week ago.

Starting second, the defending champion was happy to shadow pole-sitter and team-mate Felipe Massa until the first round of pit stops and then put in a quick lap to ensure that he exited the pit just ahead. With the race lead in his hands, Raikkonen quickly pulled a four second advantage on Massa who then spun his Ferrari - possibly with a front right brake issue - into retirement.

Starting fourth, Robert Kubica made best of Jarno Trulli’s bad start to run a comfortable third for the first half of the race before taking over second position when Massa retired. The BMW Sauber driver took the chequered flag just under 20 seconds behind Raikkonen and a similar margin ahead of third placed finisher Heikki Kovalainen in the McLaren Mercedes.

Kovalainen drove an error free race but to take the chequered flag 40 seconds behind the winner. After their Melbourne performance, the result will be a shock for McLaren who by their own admission have struggled this weekend.

Jarno Trulli started third but he and Nick Heidfeld found themselves squeezed out of the pack through turns one and two at the start of the race.
The Toyota driver recovered and took a comfortable fourth in the much-improved TF108, despite late race pressure from Lewis Hamilton.

For Hamilton, the race was always going to be about damage limitation but surprisingly he opted to run the softer type in both the first and second stint. In the third and final sting when it was effectively too late to make any further progress, the Melbourne winner was much faster as he chased Trulli across the line, just 0.7 seconds adrift.

Hamilton also lost ground in his first stop when his front right wheel insert slowed the wheel change by an additional ten seconds, so it was a case of lost opportunity for the championship leader who heads to Bahrain with a three point advantage over his nearest rival.

After losing out at the start of the race as Trulli pushed him wide, Nick Heidfeld was unable to regain the lost ground as he took the chequered flag in sixth position ahead of Mark Webber who will feel he and the team deserved more than two points from this event. The second round of stops saw the Red Bull Renault driver lose out to both Hamilton and Heidfeld but the Australian battled hard to keep Fernando Alonso behind to the flag.

For Renault, eighth position for Alonso and 11th place from Piquet was a fair result but not the kind of performance they would have hoped for heading into the weekend. Piquet had a much better weekend than in Australia and over the 58-lap race, lost just 22 seconds to his double world championship winning team-mate.

David Coulthard had a trouble-free run to ninth place in the second Red Bull Renault ahead of Jenson Button in the leading Honda. Giancarlo Fisichella drove a good race for Force India Ferrari to record the team’s first finish with 12th position ahead of Rubens Barrichello who served a drive through penalty late in the race after speeding in the pit.

Over at Williams Toyota, the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend has been disappointing. Starting 16th Nico Rosberg ran into the back of Timo Glock forcing the retirement of the Toyota driver. After pitting for a new front wing, Rosberg was unable to make much progress and finished 14th. Team-mate Kazuki Nakajima finished last in 17th position.

Anthony Davidson finished 15th in his Super Aguri Honda a lap clear of team-mate Takuma Sato. Over at Toro Rosso, Sebastien Bourdais spun into retirement on the first lap while Sebastian Vettel survived a while longer before the Ferrari engine failed.

Hamilton retains the lead of the championship, but now leads Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld by just three points with Heikki Kovalainen just one point adrift in fourth. The Formula One circus packs up and heads to Bahrain in two weeks time. Two teams tested there for six days in the off-season and they were Ferrari and Toyota.
