Formula 1 - 2008 Season

Where are all the LH haters now

I know it's only first practice, but go Lewis.

Someone disable editting in this thread quick before the rapid "adjusting" of posts begins.

So should we all go edit our posts where we have written "it might be close race between Räikkonen and Hamilton" and modify it to "Räikkönen seems to be the fastest, no doubt about it"?

Top 4 then massive scrap for the rest of the places apart from notsoSuper Aguri at the bottom.

I still have no clue who looks good. Might be a huge midfield battle come Sunday which might be very interesting to watch.

and hamilton was much quicker in second practice. Looks like Kimi had a problem, but taking into account he's half a second quicker than Massa he still would've been miles behind Lewis.

And if you combine the results from both of the runs from today, who was the fastest?

It doesn't matter who is fastest at the moment, it's too hard to split the top 4 because they are still dialling the cars in, we will know better after the final practice session before qualifying.

The opening day of the 2008 championship is complete and for the first time we get an indication of who is quick and who’s not. After topping the timesheets in the first practice session with a best lap of 1:26.461s, Kimi Raikkonen was not working on raw qualifying speed this afternoon and it was Lewis Hamilton who topped the timesheets for McLaren Mercedes with a best time of 1:26.559s.

Friday afternoon testing is usually given over for race preparation, so reading too much into the times can be tricky. However, given the pace of Raikkonen this morning and Hamilton this afternoon, it is safe to say that Ferrari and McLaren are the teams to beat around the Albert Park circuit. No surprise there then.

Mark Webber was an encouraging second fastest in his Red Bull Renault while team-mate David Coulthard endured another difficult session in his RB4. After his engine issues in the morning, Coulthard ended the afternoon session getting a lift back to the pits from the Mercedes safety car following another mechanical problem. Still, fifth fastest, the pace is there.

Felipe Massa survived a big spin exiting the fast turn 12 right-hander to record the third fastest time of the session ahead of Heikki Kovalainen in the second McLaren, Coulthard and Raikkonen.

Toyota has shown well so far with Trulli setting the seventh fastest time, despite putting his left rear tyre on the grass and spinning out of the action late in the session. Timo Glock, making his Toyota Grand Prix debut was a solid tenth fastest in the sister TF107.

After a fraught start to the weekend, the Williams Toyota duo of Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima were able to belatedly get their programme under way this afternoon. The FW30 seemed particularly prone to rear brake lock ups and oversteer, but Rosberg will be happy enough for now with his eighth fastest time while Nakajima is getting up to speed and 16th.

Giancarlo Fisichella has shown great pace in pre-season testing with the Force India Ferrari team. Today the Italian again impressed with the ninth fastest time for the new team. Team-mate Adrian Sutil had a few off track excursions on his way to 17th.

Honda looked firmly mid-field with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello 11th and 14th but so too today did the BMW Sauber team. While considered a dark horse by some sections of the media, the F1.08 seemed fairly average today with Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica 12th and 16th respectively.

Renault has long-admitted that they are not expecting race wins this year but with Fernando Alonso back on board they will be hoping for better than 13th as the weekend progresses. New-signing Nelson Piquet did not complete many laps again and was just 19th of the 22 runners.

Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais were 18th and 20th for Toro Rosso Ferrari while Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson brought up the bottom of the timesheets for Super Aguri Honda.

Looks like the German teams have got it wrapped up for this one.

Honda did pretty well too.

Vettel did best of all though, surely a star for the future?

Now the fuel guessing game begins.

BMWs to stop on the second lap, the McLarens about the 15th, who knows about Ferrari, they got their setup badly wrong this weekend after a good start, they might actually be that slow.

Well, it seems Raikonen has no option but to go for less stops with more fuel... AFAIK Webber said that overtaking is very hard, so less stops seems like an option.

Well that is still more likely than Nakajima being third... ;), but yeah I wasn't too happy to see those problems with Kimi's car. I hope he can still have a good race. BMWs are strong, they weren't fast only in the last session and it seems they have made good progress during the winter.

Timo Glock has been demoted a further five places on the Australian Grand Prix grid for blocking Mark Webber during qualifying.

The Toyota driver had already become the first recipient of a gearbox change penalty after a failure in final practice meant a new gearbox was required.

That dropped him from ninth on the grid to 14th, and he was subsequently given an added punishment for impeding the Red Bull driver early in the qualifying session.

Glock will therefore start his first grand prix for Toyota from 19th position.

Yeah, somehow I forgot to say my prediction wasn't looking too hot either, I'm so absent minded nowadays.

Really looking forward to the race though, think it will be pretty interesting.

I got the pole right! Everything else was wrong, though. :D

Anyway, disappointed with Renault and Ferrari were a bit too cocky and it bit them in the ass.

I have to say that the removal of engine braking and traction control made the racing feel more alive; looks like it is a success wrt. the spectacle.

Well what a race. :D

Hamilton was fantastic, he was as good as Massa and Raikkonen were bad. Somebody tell Massa that on cold tyres and no traction control you need to be a bit gentle into turn 1 with the throttle....

Great drives by Rosberg, Heidfield, Kovalainen and Alonso too.

Ferrari's season didn't start very well... crap it looked pretty good for Kimi in the beginning, well he got one point after Barrichello was disqualified. I wonder what the hell happened to Heikki just after he passed Alonso?

Disappointing performance from Ferrari. I hope it doesn't carry on for the whole season.

But what a day for Lewis Hamilton!
