Formula 1 - 2008 Season

Eh? Thats what they are flat out saying and thats what happens each year!

They were also making similar comments at last years launch:

Well we will have to see, only 2+ months to wait. Of course it could be something that looks "very different" to them actually requires a normal person to look twice, because they spend a lot of time looking at the car.

Introducing the new BMW Sauber F1.08

The BMW Sauber F1.08 has been built on high-class foundations, its predecessor – the F1.07 – having comfortably lived up to everything expected of it. The designers, therefore, enjoyed a sound basis on which to build, and were under no pressure to take any major risks. “That’s why we decided to go for evolution rather than revolution,” says Technical Director Willy Rampf. Added to which, the engineers benefited from the achievement of the BMW Sauber F1 Team in establishing itself as the third-strongest team on the grid early on in 2007.

“That gave us the chance to divert more resources to the development of the new car,” explains Rampf. “We put our faith in some logically consistent approaches, which led to interesting solutions.” The result is a car which Rampf describes as a 'radical evolution'.

It will be exciting to see if Sauber can mount a credible attack on the front-runners.

Yep, would be good .. must say i've been checking out the car .. and the nose definitely sticks out to me. Check the side pics. Other than that, the limited testing, time and specs that have been introduced has the cars looking all very similar. The viking horns are still there though.

Renault are the only other big team that still need to show their car. Should be interesting, since they've been different the years Alonso was there.

It'll be nice to know how the teams have adapted their cars to the Bridgestone tyres this year. Ferrari had an advantage, with McLaren adopting that advantage with the info they got but this is a new year and the teams should be able to make the data work for them.

Can't wait for the first race.

The BMW does look a lot different to me, the huge front wing with 3 rather than two planes, the side pods seemed more sculptured and the back is slimmer.

Considering they were so good last year ( in comparison to the yar before ) it makes you wonder how they will do this, perhaps threatening Ferrari and Mclaren?

Talking of which, Ferrari led todays testing in wet but drying conditions, with Torro Rosso looking pretty good also. More testing today.

Not sure I do. I'll wager that that was still with the 2007 ECU so he was probably running with TC, engine braking etc, where the 2008 cars aren't.

[Edit] Scratch that, appears it was with the standard ECU.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

Also, here are some reference times I found:

1997 European Grand Prix at Jerez: Fastest lap: Heinz-Harald Frentzen 1 m 23.135s
1994 European Grand Prix at Jerez: Fastest lap: Michael Schumacher 1m 25.040s

Anyone know of some sites with testing times from other years?

I think the new RedBull is on track today so that will be interesting.

Alonso was fastest but maybe it had little fuel and was mindgames by Renault? So many variables it is hard to tell what's what.

Yes, goodbye fuel burn, terrible idea.

Must say I am looking forward to this season more than I have for a long time.

Yes, you have a point, but I hope Renault is getting back some of the speed they lost in 2007. Sigh, what can I say? I'm still an Alonso fan. :D

What a season to look forward to for a Finn like me. Heikki on the McLaren, hopefully about to show whos the boss to Hamilton, and Kimi still on the Ferrari defending his surprise championship. Can't wait to see them battling it out, mid march can't come soon enough.

edit: One question has been itching my mind a bit: Suppose one of the Ferrari drivers suffer an injury during the season, who do you reckon would drive as the replacement? Schumacher?

edit 2: I was thinking about Michael but come to think of it, Ralf even?

The new Redbull RB4 looks a lot like the old RB3 to me. That will be evolution rather than revolution, in fact I'd go as far as saying volution would be the most appropriate, if you get my jist.

Maybe it will surprise me.

On a second note, based on a poll I saw at autosport, why are some team hard to get excited about or even slightly boring? Redbull to me is one of those team, as is Toyota, however I find BMW a lot more interesting even though their position in the field is about the same, ie midfield currently.

Who do you find most uninteresting?

Well, Red Bull is probably the most unconventional team. They usually speak out about stuff that is considered taboo to talk about in the paddock.

The team I find the least interesting must be Toyota since they can't seem to get anything right even with a monster budget. I hope they can turn it around, but I am not holding my breath.

Is it any surprise that the British Broadcasting Corporation is only reporting about Hamilton going off

If any of the drivers are even attempting to find the limit they will most likely go off.
