Formatting my PS3

I am thinking to format my PS3 to install Ubuntu on it.

My question is if I format it will everything be erased?

Like my User creations and set accounts? Or is it just going to delete the gaming, video, audio data?

I am asking because I want to know if I ll have to start noting down my accounts and passwords of each. I have 5 accounts! 4 normal(my country, UK, US, Japan) and one subaccount! Dont wont to bother trying to note down which is which and have to write them again on my account.

It wont erase the account but you must remember the password, everything else goes im pretty sure.

get remember ur account, also if you have a external hdd you can backup your data, psn games, demos and whatnot

Why do you have to format it to install Ubuntu? From what I heat, Linux allows either 10 GB or everything-but-10-GB of HDD space, so don't you just have to install it and select the option you want?

You have to repartition it, as it will create a separate 10GB partition. This does require reformatting. I backed up everything to an external HDD, did the repartitioning and then a restore. Went very smoothly.

Hey Arwin, i'm about to format, I have backed up on an external hdd(took a while)
What exactly does it restore? I can only remember P/W of my main account (not thee same as the others :( )
Is there any way to back up all/other accounts with their P/W's?

Oh yer also what do you reckon, Ubuntu or YDL??

Cheers

It does back up all accounts - basically everything is backed up and everything returns, works great. But I do think you have to enter the password again at least once.

I went for Fedora 7 myself, as it's the most officially supported one for the Cell SDK. But Ubuntu is also very popular (seemingly more popular than YDL).

Depending on what you want to do, I don't really recommend YDL, since it has some pretty outdated packages. Kernel is up to 2.6.22, but they have old packages of glibc and such, which aren't all that easy to update, and the SDK requires them if I remember correctly.

Fedora 7 is the best option now I think, since it is the officially supported OS by IBM, and Cell SDK 3.0 uses a yum based install, so no need to configure anything there. (An older Cell SDK isn't available anymore, at least not from IBM)
Ubuntu has been done too, but it's a bit harder. Tutorials should be available on the net though.

Thanks for the replies guys. I ve read the Ubuntu tutorials and it looks pretty easy.

Any links to Fedora 7 as well?

There are also more uptodate development versions of Ubuntu and .deb packages of the xorg RSX driver. Check out psubuntu.com for more info...
