Final PS3 Dev Kit and Menu Video

The Dreamcast's disk drive was very noise during loading.

OT: True. It's unbearable at times. I got one from a friend a couple weeks ago and when ever I start it up and the games load it goes, EEEEEEEEK UUURRRKKK EEEK EEKKKK URRRKK EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKK URK etc.

Heh, I don't think I've ever heard a drive like that before or since. Maybe it was due to the custom nature of the drive?

"Oh, and what about the PS3’s online offering? Last we heard there was some bizarre idea to call it PooS (P-infinity-S). We're still not entirely sure if this wasn’t just a little joke Sony cooked up as a dig at Nintendo’s daftly named Wii console. Again, watch this space for full, detailed news on the future of PS3 online gaming as we get it."

Sigh... I was excited about the annoucment untill I read that on their site and pretty much blew the authors credibility. I think it's pretty well known now that the PooS rumor started because the infinity symbol was required on the trademark documents and that it is not actually meant to be written PooS. And it certainly is not the name of their online system. Sigh...

Oh well my fingers are still crossed that they will actually have some interesting news after all, but after reading that I am not expecting much.

Well to be fair, they are not the only site saying that sony will have two announcements.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has recently announced that even though they will be present at the upcoming Games Convention which will begins 23rd August in Leipzig in Germany none of their upcoming PS3 launch titles will be playable at the show. They have instead decided to hold of all PS3 games until the Tokyo Game Show which takes place later this year. Sony have stated that they will however have two PS3 related announcements at the show over the two days of its duration.

I clearly hear the 360's DVDROM and fans through every game I've played so far, especially the DVDROM. It's almost annoyingly loud, particulary with uncentered discs. It's even worse than those early CDROM titles for PS2 that spun ...

I do not doubt your claim in any way but I have NEVER once heard my 360 other than when a game is starting to spin up.

Once it starts, I never hear it or do not notice it over the surround sound (even in quiet game moments)

*shrugs*

IGN Weekly has direct feed video of the dev kit xmb, they go into some of the options like display/audio etc. and also show the friends menu..

(They don't actually go into any of the friends options, btw).

wow, thanks Titanio, I was wondering what was in that friends menu. Now I know.
I suppose it's just a sample of what we will see in november.

downloading the ign weekly now :p

edit:
just to clear it up to make sure nobody confuses the dev kit xmb menu with the final menu, heres a list of the menu selections the dev kit is missing from the retail version (based off the e3 interface showing)

settings:
BD/DVD settings
Photo Settings
Music Settings
Keyboard/Mouse Settings
Photo: (complete menu missing)
Music: (complete menu missing)
Video: (complete menu missing)
Game:
Game Data Utility
Save Data Utility
Network: (complete menu missing)
web browser

and of course the background customizing/waves are not in the dev kit as IGN noted. but it should also be noted the e3 build of the interface never showed the Friend sub-menu's the current dev kit's do, so It shouldnt be seen as the final version either.

The odd little disc thing in MasaC's picture is a bluetooth receiver/antenna. It's got a little sucker on the bottom, so you can mount/stick it whereever is convenient.

And before you all get stressed, the retail PS3 doesn't need this attachment.. it's just for devkits (think of a devkit in a rackmount unit, or one stashed away somewhere, or a room with loads of devkits, and you can imagine that something like this would be quite useful).

If you watched the IGN video, the ICON text fades after a couple of seconds. Looks funny but I think it is just the quality of the video no?

Anways, I cannot wait to see the final version of the GUI. :D

should have a poll on what ppl expect the 'surprise' to be
im picking more memory,
then again it could be release date confirmation (ahem)

The surprise sounds more like a new (controller) feature than a spec change. I don't think a poll is viable as it could be absolutely anything. Well, not absolutely anything. It won't be an inflatable dinosaur that pops out of the controller, or an in-built 'Tickle Me Elmo' that pops out of the PS3 when you flip open the lid. It could be something bizarro like pressure sensitive grips, that feel how tight they're being held. Why you'd want to I don't know, and TBH I can't think of any features that'd really make a big noticeable difference, other than rumble. Built in mic seems a waste when a headset is much more useful in that regard. Built in speaker is different but wouldn't be unique (and would be a stolen idea :p). The mind boggles...

Since it's something extraordinary ("out of leftfield"), my guesses are:

* 3D goggles (To go with HDTV. Players will duck when daggers appear to fly out of the big screen in Heavenly Sword. Think about Minority Report UI, Resident Evil 5, Lair, and *drum roll* Blu-ray pr0n)

* Different form of rumble (a wrist band ?)

* PSP discount coupon (to act as secondary screen)

* Batarang makes a come back. Ok, not really.

Since it's something extraordinary ("out of leftfield"), my guesses are:
Given PR can talk about 'exciting news' and reference a demo, 'out of leftfield' could be something terribly mundane. You couldn't get more leftfield than Tickle Me Elmo though :D

Thanks for the clarification!

The idea it was a USB antenna for wireless devices did cross my mind. I thought of it more in lines of being a receiver for wireless mouse and keyboard but that disc didn't look like it was connected to a USB port. I didn't at all think of it as a BT antenna because I believed the dev kits had BT built in like all the retail models.

Hi Masa. Yeah, it connects to a socket on the back of the devkit (not USB). I assume that the reason the antenna is being used is because the kit is still enclosed in a fairly thick metal case.. so an internal antenna would really cut the mustard. Well.. that's my theory anyway.. :)

Without the aerial plugged in, the bluetooth still works, but with a range that means you more or less have to have the controller sat on the devkit to use it. Using the aerial we can use the controllers from the other end of the office through several walls. Beyond that it gets a bit tricky to actually tell if it's working or not, so we didn't try.

I'll assume the final consumer version will work at a moderate distance without need for an external aerial, but possibly not quite the insane distance I've seen with a devkit.

hey aldo, you still there?

I thought this was interesting...

The marketing chap had the lamest excuse of them all, he said that Sony doesn’t want to show the live demo as there is a hidden secret feature that Sony doesn’t want to show off yet.

though their line after sounds kinda harsh towards sony, considering they had a ps3 running at e3.
I can guarantee you that it super does not work and that Sony is merely showing what the machine will look like.
