Final PS3 Dev Kit and Menu Video

I'm starting to think less about the rumble and think it's indeed something else with the controller or OS.

Changes to the controller?

I'm wondering if they have made the no.2 shoulder buttons pressure sensitive like the xbox triggers:

Wasn't that one of the announced changes for the Batarang controller? The L2/R2 buttons look to have more travel like triggers in the DS3 pic, but that doesn't account for a new special feature that's left-field and PS3 exclusive, nor only apparent when PS3's turned on.

Well I was thinking in regard to the 'new feature' being used by the darkness. Can't think of too much else.

Some more possibilities that are 'left-field' or unexpected:

- Fancy bluetooth shenanigans with cellphones, etc (bluetooth earpieces would make sense here) - text entry with a cellphone?
- Java games (homebrew?)
- HDMI 1.3 higher dynamic range format support..
- Something really dumb, say, there are blue leds inside the bluray drive...
- Linux Desktop
- The console has rumble
- <strike>phantom</strike> sony lapboard
- 4D
- XNA :p

(in order of expectedness ;-)

I'm not entirely sure about this but I believe HDMI 1.3 is about having more bits per component but no extended range

Hmm you might be right. Although it does seem odd given that extended range TVs are starting to come out (eg these - which look really amazing). 16bit/channel is also a tad overkill if it's still a restricted range.

never mind. off topic. I just really like led backlit tvs :)

I hate to break this to those who think otherwise, but having a "final dev kit" at this point is not much to brag about for Sony. They have much bigger worries from what I have heard.

From everything I have heard, I think if the situation were any different that Sony would delay until 2007, or at least launch only in Japan and push back the rest of the world's launches until 2007.

To enlighten those who don't know what goes on right before a console launches, it usually cuts it pretty close, but sometime before launch you have to find out if your game is actually going to run on the actual hardware (also known as, debug kit, the kind which are sent to press as well), and if you aren't able to find that out, people basically start freaking out or delaying games. Since Sony hasn't started manufacturing, you can safely assume they have not shipped a single debug unit to a developer, even first party.

There are certain logistics and factors and every day is pushing everything closer and closer to an impossibility. I don't think Sony has ever been under this kind of pressure before and it will be interesting to see how they perform under it. From the improvement Genji has seen it seems they are trying very hard on their own games, but it will be a miracle if more than 3 or 4 of them are ready by 2006.

Final dev kit is quieter, pretty PSP-ish UI, but still too many unanswered questions from a dev perspective. All experienced developers can tell at what point Sony is, and it's behind where Microsoft was before they were launching. They also know that Sony is staking their reputation when they say they will ship 6 M by EOCY, because if they don't they will pretty much screw themselves over in the eyes of every major publisher that is trying to get a game out on PS3 platform this year.

My point is that final dev kit may give some folks assurance that Sony is close to the finish line, but the truth is far from that, and you would be wise to keep your eyes on the fight which happens this fall (in the US, 360 versus PS3, in EU and Japan, PS3 versus Wii) because it will probably decide whether or not PS3 is a failure.

My opinion and personal speculation - Sony will release a PS3 without Blu Ray by end of 2007, for same price as whatever 360 is then. They will be getting their butts kicked that bad. They have left too many things wide open and ready to be expanded or pulled back, this is shown in many ways, lack of clarity in TRC would be one example of something fishy, but even just the simple menu interface displayed in the dev kit menu is also very telling of Sony's wait and see, pull back and re-engineer, respond to market demand strategy.

I have a hard time believing this. Wouldnt that disable ALL of their games not to be run on the PS3? All games are going to be on blu-ray AFAIK.

CountZeroInt, is the sky falling too? Maybe your post should be in the can the PS3 save Sony thread... anyhow, I will keep my eye out for the 2007 release of the PS3 ;)

CountZeroInt, I think I can understand what you're trying to tell us. I have similar feelings about this, but less intense. I also think that Sony has gone through similar ordeals before. There's very little we can do now except to wait and see. Hang in tight. The truth will be out soon.

EDIT: Just a minor correction to your post. It should be "6 M by EOFY" instead of "6 M by EOCY"

Was that a typo? You're saying between now and next year, Sony still won't have launched PS3 and when they do they'll have dropped BRD? Why on earth would they drop BRD? It'll be cheaper by then and lots of games seem to be needing it, going over 8 GB in size (unless they just shrink down their HD cutscenes!). And why would they wait a year to release? You're saying between now, with final devkits including final hardware, and mid 2007, Sony won't be able to make any PS3s? For the next six months or so what are they waiting for to start manufacture? If they're going to drop BRD because it's holding them back, why not do that now rather than wait a year to do it?

You've got a very original speculation and I'd love to know what reasoning it's based on!

[edit]In the interests of keeping the drama here to a minimum... Sufficed to say, I would take the word of CountZeroInt with a heavy pinch of salt.
