Final PS3 Dev Kit and Menu Video

I doubt you could even hear "jet turbine" style noise in just about every game besides RPGs.
I clearly hear the 360's DVDROM and fans through every game I've played so far, especially the DVDROM. It's almost annoyingly loud, particulary with uncentered discs. It's even worse than those early CDROM titles for PS2 that spun at like 6x speed constantly and caused a permanent hum through the console; 360 spindle speed is 10x isn't it?

Ok, worst case scenario, it's somewhere inbetween that and a child's bedroom.
I'd assume from the reports we have so far that it's more like the bedroom than the other, especially considering BR is just 2x speed max. Optical drive will be rather quiet I'll wager - barring noisy seeks I guess, but hopefully they'll select a quiet servo motor for that task...

It could be rumble, but the author of the article seems to lump the feature in as a PS3 exclusive: Since X360 has rumble it wouldn't be an exclusive on the PS3.
Indeed. I expect something other than rumble, for which there's no point keeping it a secret and it's a not a new tech that's exclusive to PS3.

Maybe when the player is hit he will experience some "friendly" shocks through the controller?
There was a Sony patent a little while back for using shape changing polymers. Maybe they've figured out how to use this technology to create feedback or perhaps during a game the controller can morph into a Wii-mote. :p

Edit: For those who don't recall the polymer patent:
Gamasutra - Although the Sony patent, which can be examined in full at the United States Patent Office website, does not make specific mention of the device’s application for a possible follow-up to the PSP, it does specifically describe the technology’s use with a game controller.

A scenario is described where a user touches a “control sectionâ€￾ of the controller with their fingers and the feeling of touch is controlled by the device. The example is given of a player being defeated in a fighting game, after which the controller becomes soft to “ improve the realistic sensations in the gameâ€￾.
I suppose it could be used similarly with an FPS like "The Darkness." ;)

GameInformer have some more photos of the kits from that event. The reason I post them is that they show the side of the kit..and surprisingly (to me anyway), there are no vents on the side:

I suppose it's not that surprising if they're rack-mountable, but if there's no vents on the other side either, then that means the only vents are the the thin line of vents at the bottom of the front, and whatever is at the back.

thanks Titanio. good pics.

aldo, about some those sony secret(s). Theres supposedly 2 announcements to be made by Sony on the 21st and on the 23rd in Germany. Heres some small bit of info about it...

Interesting PlayStation Announcements Planned
First in a series of unveilings planned for Leibzig

***** caught up earlier this week with the good people of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for a quick chat about all things PlayStation and we are pleased to let you know that the frustrating post-E3 wait for proper information on our PlayStation future is just about to end, with the first in a series of major announcements being made this coming Monday from Leibzig.

We can assure you that this first unveiling will, shall we say, be something you are very unlikely to have foreseen, coming from way out of leftfield. Suffice to say it brought a smile to our face as we think it will do yours. Check in here first thing on Monday when we’ll be able to disclose the full details of this announcement, as well as picking up the first tasty news droppings from all the other publishers at Leibzig.
http://news.sp00ng.com/article/10614

It seems they know about the "secret" just as IGN knows about something also, but are unable to tell anyone.
Edit: the fact that they can only "disclose" this information at the start of monday makes me further beleive they are under some sort of NDA on the announcement.

Just so we know, IGN said it was purely a mistake that the preview disappeared, and it'll be back shortly. So I don't know if conspiracy theories should be based on that ;)

In all likelihood, the reference made to "another" secret thing could be simply about Starbreeze's use of something we already know about, that they just don't want to talk about yet. Eyetoy related stuff is unlikely enough, but that patent cited above is WAY out there :p

Yep, I expected someone to call me on that one earlier. I really can't see where this patent has any advantage on a game controller. In the Sony patent it looks like they wanted to cover their bases and added it as one of many possible uses. Probably wanted to get it listed before Immersion filed a separate patent for just that application. :D

Great find, but I thought you were spoofing me. Your link is wrong. Here's the proper link:

Ah sorry about that, I copy and pasted the link from another forum (e-empire)
Something tells me it wont be a game announcment but as you were leading on to before, a peripheral or accessory. Possibly something regarding their online service. But yeah, Your guess is as good as mine as to whatever it is. :p

No Problem. Just happy to have the news.

BTW, they seem to be hinting here:
It would also seem that Sony has seriously taken on board the many criticisms targeted at the company following a poorly received E3 PlayStation 3 showing and done what it does best – gone into lockdown mode whilst its development and marketing teams get on with the serious, hard work of ensuring that both the PS3’s technical offering and the marketing message are both spot on for the looming 17th November launch.
Sounds like something definitely on the equipment side.

yeah, and they mention it relatively to the "criticisms" around e3. And one of the biggest criticism I can think around e3, is not having rumble in the controller. Couple that with the random quotes of "whilst its development", "Xbox 360 fans shouldn't worry about feeling left out", "While those weren't the finalized controllers for the PS3 itself", and "possible changes with another feature we can't talk about yet." It really makes me think its something to do with the controller. Maybe not rumble (maybe so), but definately something around a controller or accessory.

ok we need to seriously stop the speculation aldo!, in 3 days we will find out. It's making my brain hurt. :p

Whether there will be mouse & keyboard support in games I think is up to the game developers. The PS3 does support them as stated in the following video where they demonstrate the XMB interface:

Not rumble, but full blown force feedback maybe? Gyroscopes that actually provide resistance and can pull the controller in a certain direction?

Aiight... I don't want to get my anticipation up for nothing. So I shall ignore all your juicy speculations about the new PS3 secret. :devilish:

MasaC, that thing in the second picture looks like a normal camera lens cap.

The one in the first pic looks like a bio-sensor for detecting players' heartbeat, adrenaline level, temperature, IQ, alpha waves, ... *Shake head violently* I mean, whatever it is... it's wired. So it doesn't fit the wireless controller well (Unless it's some sort of receiving station).

As good as that sounds, im not even going to comment. :p
I think I've offered enough of my speculation on these rumors enough today. It might end up blowing back in my face when this becomes nothing more than a minor change or something small. I'll be optimistic, but not get my hopes up on anything.

3 days guys!

MasaC: Could this be the ominous foot switch maybe ?
patsu: I dont think its somekind to be used for consumers anyway, doesnt seems like its connected via usb. It would be hangin on one of the front USBs in case it would be a whatever-meter.

Still, a device detecting your stresslevel would be nice, just imagine playing a horror-game which adjust to your personal fears :D , knows when you arent paying full attention to mess with your subconciousness (ie driving you nuts as you arent sure if you actually just imagined the glowing eyes in the dark), etc.

LOL. I just got back to the computer and I was going to make an almost identical post. Nice job. We both have too much extra time on our hands.

Looks like Red Octane is releasing "Castanet Hero" for the PS3 after all. I'm stoked.

Seriously, I agree with Npl. It looks to be the foot pedal NAO referred to earlier in this thread.

Monday can't come fast enough.

EDIT: The connector on the end of the cord seems to be a circular DIN type connector which matches the Foot SW jack on the front of the dev kit:
