Feb NPD! The 2nd best thing to crack.

The PSU on my old 20GB died 4 days ago, called Microsoft support and they'll send a new one withing 15 days. Decided to get an Elite and give the old box to my brother when the replacement PSU arrives.

Anyway, I've been to 5 different stores this morning, 3 places didn't have the Elite in stock (all had Arcades and two had the Halo version). One place had them, but at the old price point (I'm in Europe). The last place had 2 left at the new price point.

So while you *can* find them, shops are not exactly well stocked.

*off topic*: Going shopping on saturday during easter is HELL

Cheers

I was in Best Buy yesterday evening (N California), and they had no Arcades and no Pros, but they had about 15 Elites @ $450. Perhaps that price is just too high now that BR has won and the PS3 is $400?

"Right now, you can go into retail and find an Xbox (360) pretty much everywhere, today," Greenberg said. "But we don't consider ourselves fully in stock today because there are retailers who want to buy more consoles from us, and we're unable to supply that."

MS idea of shortage is quite interesting....

Supply isn't just about having units on shelves, it's about keeping them there. And that quote indicates they were able to get units back on shelves but are now having problems resupplying. If that persists long enough then there will again be shortages. In this way the only difference (unless you think this is all a fabrication, of course) between the 360 Pro and the Wii is the severity of the shortages. The Wii's supply is so far outstripped by demand that it sells out much much faster.

Keep in mind, stores wouldn't need to order more stock if they hadn't already sold or are expecting to soon sell what they had/have.

I just bought a 360 Pro ..... finding that thing was the most insane chore. There were Arcades and Elites everywhere, but I had to go to about ten different stores until I found one. Not a single EB Games, Futureshop, Best Buy, Zellers or Toys R' Us had one in stock. I ended up finding one at the Source. The person in EB said their Microsoft rep implied the Pros were being held back for a bundle. Wonder what that could be? ;)

Congrats. I hope it treats you well. What is/are your initial game(s)?

I bought NHL08 and Fight Night Round 3(used). NHL was the game I really wanted to play, and I had a lot of fun with the earlier Fight Night Games. The price on the new games is pretty steep, so I'm going to be getting reduced price classics and used games for a while.

Some interesting numbers from NPD:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18107

Sales tracking group NPD has announced the results of a new gaming study, showing that 72 percent of the U.S. say they played games, online play still lagging behind offline, and an overwhelming minority owning more than one next-gen system.

I would of thought these would of been a little higher:

Finally, NPD says only three percent of respondents said they owned two of the three next-gen consoles, and only 2 percent said they owned all three.

I don't really see why anyone would think the multi console owner numbers would be high. I don't really think of myself as a busy person but I don't have time to play all the games I want to play on one platform. Investing several hundred dollars on another platform to play a couple of titles just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

So you're limiting the numbers to people who

1) don't care about 'wasting' money on a platform they will barely use
2) Really hardcore gamers who have enough money to support the habit.
3) own ps3 as a blu-ray player only.

I've thought about buying a ps3, but I refuse to pay money for blu-ray movies at their current prices and the few game titles I'd pick up (and not really play) just don't seem worth ~$500. When the price goes down to $200 I might move into category 1.

If all the best games were exclusives maybe you'd have more people buying multiple consoles, but I doubt that (5%) number has changed all that much from last gen.

I think people should stop trying to generalize their own preferences as this is no different than blu-ray player only PS3 owners explaining low PS3 software sales.

ps: We probably have many multi console owners right here.

How does that make it wrong? The simple fact is that there is some portion of ps3 owners using them as blu-ray only. (some of them right here in these forums)

Just like we have a lot of sli/crossfire users, tech forums are not exactly an accurate cross section of your typical consumer.

So? That doesnt change the fact that this portion may be far from being representative of the market.

The portion of people owning a specific console in beyond3d may not even have any relation to the market trends

For example you see more people discussing their PS3 or 360 consoles here. Rarely do you see people talk about their Wii's. But we all know how huge is its installbase and demand

And similarly a higher percentage of members own more than one console than in the market.

Lastly you dont know how big is the portion that bought the PS3 just to play BR movies in the market itself and if they havent tried to use it for gaming at all

The fact that there are some multi-console posters who prefer gaming in one platform, does not explain software sales of the other console. Similarly the fact that you or I don't see the point of owning two consoles doesn't mean much.

I agree - but I don't think B3D represents a standard cross-section of the market ;)

Yeah, that's why personal preference generalization is even more meaningless.

so remove the 1 generalized comment... It doesn't change my argument.

The NPD has established that very few (~5%) people own multiple consoles from this generation. I basically said its not surprising due to cost and time commitments.

I honestly have no clue what argument you're trying to make at this point. Other than I've upset you by suggesting that the ps3 is used as a blu-ray player.

Eh what?? :???:

Sorry but after that comment of yours I dont think there is any point for me to discuss with you. I dont like it at all when people make such baseless assumptions about the person they are talking with.

well even when the ps2 came out people bought them as DVD players with the option to play games and look how successfu that turned out to be. During last gen xbox had the highest game to console ratio also. It seems in these departments nothing has changed from last gen.

but im wondering how much is sony selling the ps3 at a loss for ?, becuase my uncle who works for sony at the distributor level cant get a discount on any sku, with his discount i bought a bravia kdl40v2500 that were overstocked for around $500. He even told me he had a pallets full of the 20g and 60g and that alot of people are asking for stock of these sku that he had to decline becuase they had to be shipped back or held. 40g is being pushed heavly.
