EyeToy/Peripherals talk at GDC - how it came to be.

Yes, it amkes sense to not exclude the dog barking, though that was more an example of the mic's sensitivity. The surprising thing is that game audio isn't being cancelled, and that'd be the one thing you could be sure should be! A person shouldn't be able to hear themself over another person's audio because that person's mic should be removing the sent audio asbackground noise. It might be a tricky thing to do in software which explains it not hapenning, but it's the advertising of the PSEye as having a noise cancelling microphone that annoys me. If it isn't actually cancelling the noise, don't stick in the promotional material that it does -
PSEye Pres Release said:
New microphone functions
An all-new four microphone array, incorporating multidirectional voice
location tracking, enhanced echo cancelling and background noise
suppression allows for clear audio chat in even the most noisy of
environments, without the need to hold or wear a headset.
That's pretty much a lie. The PSEye just gives four microphones. None of the other features come with the device, and would have to be listed as software features in games that support PSEye.

Yeah, I think Sony needs to clarify this.

Echo cancellation is a hard problem if the problem is general. Unlike PC and cellphone headset where the location of the user, mic and speakers are rather similar, and the range of the mic is limited; the PS Eye has an open-ended problem here.

Assuming it's not in now, someone will need to license and port an adaptive acoustic echo cancellation algorithm from elsewhere (plus pay for the royalty !). I don't know how effective the result will be though.

EDIT: The mic array is another awesome sauce improvement according to the press release here

The second PSEye image illustrates what I see from my PSEye. Grainy, noisy images is all the camera seems to pick up. The EyeToy image may be darker, but I can see realistic color gradations with it.

I taped my EyeToy to a Wii guitar and shot a video with it. The only light source is from my projector screen, which proves inadequate whenever I try to use the PSEye in supporting PS3 games.

It appears grainy when the environment is too dim. However, PS Eye should allow you to see better in the dark. The image quality depends on which resolution you use too.

EDIT:
For PS Eye to work best, it's better to avoid a harsh/strong light source. I use a desk lamp, and let the light reflects off the wall. It works rather well (even though the video may seem a little grainy). If I turn on the overhead, soft room light, it works too (smoother pictures), but sometimes I am too lazy to walk over to the switch.

OTOH, if I use a halogen lamp, I'll have intermittent problems with EoJ recognition. Need to hold the halogen light in one hand and adjust the angle to "trick" the Eye
