Yeah, it was. And then later the 40GB model got upgraded to 80GB, right? (together with the 80GB to 160GB). There have been two $100 price drops I think, but the last one has been more than a year ago and that's probably what Shifty meant (together with that we need a PS3 for under 300, game included).

Right now we've got 80GB Infamous bundles here at Media Markt too, for 379 euros.

I don't think there have been two price-cuts. In the US there was the 20Gb at $500 and 60Gb at $600. Europe never got 20Gb, I think. They discontinued both and and introduced the 40Gb at $400 and 80Gb at $500. Then they upgraded the 40Gb to 80Gb and replaced the 80Gb with the 40Gb with a 160Gb HDD, still at $400 and $500. This is US, though -- was there a price-cut in Europe but not in the US?

Wiki said only the 60Gb version launched at 600EUR, so that's ~200EUR difference.

Code:
Wii NDS DSi PS3 PSP XB360 Total
27 Jun 09 5.4 9.1 0.3 2.2 3.3 3.9 24.2
31 Jan 09 5.1 9.0 1.9 3.2 3.3 22.5
Over the last 6 months, the 360 has sold 600,000 units while the Wii and PS3 have sold 300,000 units.
Kotaku has also has data but on a longer period of time (the trend are the same anyway).

PS3 seems to have gotten a €100 price cut in norway, atleast plenty of stores selling 80gb ps3 for 3000 NOK (6000 NOK at launch)

Okay, I think there was a price drop for PS3. I recall the high-end pricier SKU being dropped and eventually we ended up with the low-price SKU, which in itself isn't really a price drop, because PS3 was always available at that price. But as others have said, it did get a drop at some point. However, by comparison XB360 has had more significant price drops, bith the introduction of the cheaper SKU and the price reductions of aid SKU. My original comparison is flawed, in that it's not "Same price PS3 versus price reduced XB360", but it's still a somewhat unfair comparison in that PS3 remains in a very high price-bracket and has sat there for a long time, certainly over the year in which Rangers is comparing as a sea change and in which XB360 had a price cut. Yes, Wii sales have slumped relatively, but it's premature to say the platform has burnt itself out of XB360 is overtaking. It's overtaking because it cut into the inside track. Wii can do that any time it wants, and then we'll see how fast it can or can't move. And likewise the price difference between PS3 and XB360 is so great, yet can fairly readily be closed by Sony (assuming to some degree a cheaper slim SKU), which could change the sales landscape once again.

The 360 never introduced a cheaper SKU. They had the Core from launch. They just made it a more attractive package when they re-branded it as the Arcade. The only new SKU they introduced (in terms of their price structure) was the Elite - not counting the farcical Halo 3 SKU - which was a more expensive SKU.

I'd also argue that, given the public's rejection of both the 20GB PS3 and Core 360 SKU that these shouldn't even be considered. They were not attractive products relative to the other options available. Most who would be willing to commit to spending $500 on a PS3 were probably just as willing to spend $600 to have the top model. Similarly, anyone spending $300 on a 360 was probably the type of gamer who would not be willing to do without a hard drive.

I guess these numbers are in dispute at GAF. Particularly apparently the DS numbers are way too low, which of course throws the whole thing in question. So "sea change" on hold

It would really surprise me to see 360 outsell Wii anywhere when it hasn't come close to doing that in USA, so I'm not surprised the numbers are "under review" :p

Pricing in the Netherlands right now (gamemania.nl)

PS2: €99. 2 controllers, ratchet gladiator
DSi: €169. Dsi+Order of the Phoenix
PSP: €169. Lite + NFS Prostreet
360: €179. Pro(60GB) with 3 games (PGR3, kung-fu panda, lego jones) and two controllers
Wii: €229. (Wii, 1 remote + Wiisport)
PS3: €379 80GB, Ratchet&Clank, Killzone single controller and 3 blu-ray movies.

That puts pricing in perspective. buy any two consoles/handhelds and you still end up cheaper than a single PS3.

I liked the "limited offer" they had over christmas here though. A chain store (bart smit) selling a couple of hundred 40GB PS3's for €279. But that litterally sold out in minutes. by the time the news hit the web, they were sold out. Indicating there is at least a good demand for a cheap PS3 up to a point that it could be competitive with the 360.

There was no public rejection of 20GB PS3. It was sold out everywhere within a week after the release, and only few selected _online_ retailers got them resupplied a couple of times after that. Sony just didn't want to sell them for obvious reasons.

Pretty much the opposite of what happened in the US. 20 gig PS3's were piled up on pallets in stores after initial pre-order frenzy. They sold pretty fast after the price was cut though. The more expensive model seemed to sell out generally however.

SB

I'm talking about US (there is no PAL 20GB) so no, 20GBs were never piled up. Sony didn't resupply them, and I should know because I was regularly checking in the four months after launch. eb/gamestop online got them a few times, and much later Amazon (another limited supply) if I recall correctly.

I guess we can match one anecdotal story with another as 20gb PS3's were simple to get in LA, they were literally piled everywhere. I eventually ended up getting a 20gb model because the 60gb models weren't being restocked.

In the Bay Area, 20GB were easy to find, even during Christmas season. 60GB's became regularly available during Jan.

Same for WA state. 20 gig PS3's were piled up by the pallets in many of the retail chains. BB, Circuit City, etc... Good luck finding a 60 gig model however.

The 20 gig's only really sold after news leaked that Sony was 1) stopping production of HW BC compat. and 2) reducing the price to clear the channel of 20 gig PS3s.

Some French sales

http://www.lsa.fr/exclusif-lsa-les-ventes-de-consoles-de-jeu-en-forte-baisse,106857

YTD (To May 31 2009)
NDS 700,000 (300,000 DSi)
Wii 307,000
360 176,000
PS3 160,000
PSP 104,000

LTD

NDS: 7.4 million
Wii: 3.2 million
PSP: 2.3 million
PS3: 1.4 million
360: 1.3 million

It is not any more the euphoria in the video game.

Behind, Wii (307 000 specimens) shows a fall of 35% compared to 2008, just like the PS3 (160 000 specimens (- 35%)) and the PSP (104 000 specimens (- 37%)). Only XBox 360 survives (+50% to 176.000 units) in this stagnation.
