can anyone elaborate on actual features which were superior to the competition at the time?

The Saturn is definitely a better 2D system than the Psone.Period.

BUT the psone catch up the saturn level in 2D by using tricks, such as (as already mentioned) Flat polygons.

In the late of the lifespan of the 2 machines. Devs started using Flat poly on the psone wich allow this one to do very impressive 2D (looking) games!

The examples that made JVD are real but concern only the first CPS-1-2/Neo-Geo Port (such as Kof 95, 96, X-men Cota...)

and I want to know why (or at least beside the memory advatage, since that is a done deal) Period.

We've already had at least one developer emphasize that memory as an prime factor in it's performence, anything else?

 Sorry , i souldn't have quoted you , because i thought you were looking for facts about 2D performance of both Psone and Saturn
and i thought that i didn't have to explain why saturn was obviously a better 2D machine (that's explain the "period" , it wasn't mean to be impolite or something  ) because the others have already talked about it.
So i only focused on Psone 2D performance.

To answer briefly, saturn was (one of) the last machine designed to be 2D gameplay oriented. That explain all the 2D features included (such as all kind of rotation , rotating playfileds , 5 backgrounds scrolling all with (Enlargement, scaling, rotating, reduction effects), etc...)

edit:typo

yes, I'm am well aware of that and the 2D focus of the feature set of the Saturn. My question is and can be rephrased as. Which factor most contributed to the Saturns superiority in 2D titles and which could not be reproduced (in an manner of speaking) ont eh PS1 and other architeures of the Day?

take away the memory advantage and what do you have? (speaking hypothectically here). what is is weaker in?

When you have members claimng that even the DC doesn;t match up in terms of 2D effects you have to ask this quetion.

EDIT:

now that I've brought this up, that a look at Grandia ont he Saturn --> PS1 for example of the difference in performence of the 2 platforms. )loads of slowdown in the PS1 version, from memory) what's going on here do you think?

Umm, maybe it has something to do with memory but it may also have to do with being an entirely different architecture. Grandia was designed for the Saturn from the groundup and isn't exactly a 2d game. It is a valid comparison but not really one that should be taken to heart. Grandia on the Saturn was much better than the PS1 version simply because it wasn't butchered in the sense of content and overall game are concerned.

Ahh. Capcom has stated before that the Saturn was more powerful than the PS1 because the Saturn has many 2d features that PS1 lacks. I could get into it a little more but it might be seen as biased of me from others' perspectives.

That Dreamcast comment should be taken as a joke. No way in hell the Saturn would beat the DC in terms of 2d performance.
