Dirt demo on Live Marketplace this Thursday

For anyone who's interested I have been playing around with the settings in the PC version. It seems shadows are by far the biggest performance killer. Setting them to medium should allow you to increase all the other settings without too much impact. Im now playing with everything on high and shadows at medium witha fairly consistent >30fps on my GTS.

Things go downhill though when you go to cockpit view although its still plenty playable for me.

Yes I remember reading in an old interview that the engine was developed with Cell in mind and with the help of Sony. Yet the PS3 is still under development...

Neon, from what I gather, is a complete game engine that began life as an extension of Sony's PSSG.

"PSSG is, at its core, a graphics engine … It's not a complete game-engine (unlike Unreal, for example) but it is intended to be a pretty complete package for handling the rendering part of a game. We're not finished yet, but we already have all the things you would expect, like handling of complex scenes, visibility checks, and sophisticated animation playback & blending. We're continually adding new features and responding to requests from developers, so it's also growing. For example, we're adding integration with physics engines right now - but for the most part, we're still focused on graphics."– PS3PC.net

I think parallelization gives it a model for dealing with complexity. So even the first iteration (in DiRT) is able to support features that racing fans have been clamoring for -- like a fractal system with weather patterns -- in addition to all of the other stuff.

Despite a few issues with the frame-rate and the disappointing online mode, Colin McRae: DiRT is one of the most enjoyable next-gen racing experiences we’ve had. The single-player is rich and fun, with a well-rounded collection of different events, vehicles and tracks which never become tiresome nor boring thanks to the variation of driving experiences offer. The feeling of speed is great too, particularly on the tighter courses, but most importantly DiRT is a lot of fun because it's immediately accessible. Whether you're an experienced wheelman or new to driving games, DiRT will offer a white-knuckle thrill ride you won't forget.

9/10 from IGN UK.

Looks like a winner. I'm going to hold off until I can find it for $40, too many racers in my library and Motorstorm is getting a big patch in a few weeks.

Hopefully Fry's has a $39.99 deal on this and then I'm in. A bit let down about the controls being more arcade like than sim :(

Why a let down? It's CMR, it's always always ALWAYS been arcade, no matter how much they crow about it being a 'sim'.

Never played their previous titles so didn't know that.

On the other hand they always pretended to be realistic. But the driving model was always sub-par to the rally sections in Gran Turismo, so that gives you an idea. Nowadays there's another rally game that pretends to the realism crown. Name slipped me for a sec.

However, you have to keep in mind that when CMR 2.0 was released, it stood out for being realistic, just like TOCA 2 did at the time.

What really worries me is that this game is characterised by the review above as being more Arcadish than CMR. That's not a good sign for me.

ok it came out a week later than I expected.

plays much like RSC2 to me and the menus are the slickest EVER. the graphics (lighting, particle effects tracks, cars, dust build up, colors and AA) are gorgeous. One of the smothest looking (from AA perspective) games yet IMO.

fun arcade racing with lots of upgrading and plenty of tweaking to be had for "not a sim".

One of the best looking Next Gen games to date

My buddy just bought it, so I'll be playing this weekend at his house.

I hope he has a nice HDTV?

be sure to check out the sweet Replays too.

slow-mo terminal crashes are cool. :D

65" Sony SXRD. I told him not to buy it, he buys games and never plays them (so why pay $60, wait until they are $30!). Good news is I can barrow games indefinitely, but he says a guy at work will buy it if he doesn't want to keep it.

yea, I'm playing through career mode now and really enjoying it... it has a lot more depth than I anticipated. I can see me putting it up for trade in when Sega Revo or PGR4 come along based on the simplistic multiplayer, but I'm certainly enjoying the eye candy and varied racing challenges.

oh and as for paying $60... I used to buy mostly used games... but now I prefer to reward the developers by paying for their hard work. :p I still get $25 back on trade in and let the people who waited buy it used.

with the numerous Xbox Live Demos there are few reasons to buy a game only to sell it 2 days later 'cause you hate it anymore. ;)

Paying $60 if you are playing it is one thing, but buying it when you have a stack of 25 other games you never opened is ridiculous. He hardly touched his GC and Xbox games from last gen and now he has tons of Xbox and PS3 games that go unplayed. Insane IMO.

I just last week made him play Gear of War co-op with me, he had never played it despite owning since release day... and he's single! Now he's talking about getting a Wii
