Imo Gran Turismo has never been much of a benchmark in dirt physics, quite the opposite actually. It has always been way too slippery. The real rally cars have great grip in gravel.
Have you driven a rally car Dr Evil?
No, but I have been on the passenger seat and I know people who race in the lower classes. Those rally tires do really have pretty amazing grip on gravel.

The hugely successful Codemasters game Colin McRae: DiRT is back with a sequel, DiRT2. Axis completed CGI shots for insertion into this controversial live action teaser trailer.
Axis director Wiek Luijken worked with the live action, directed by Adam Kaleta through Cinch Productions, and the Axis team tracked the footage and matched their CG cameras to the editing style.
Techniques developed for other Codemasters trailers such as DiRT and Fuel were then used to create the CG cars and landscape.

Munich – Codemasters, developer and publisher of award-winning video games, and Realtime Technology AG (RTT), a leading provider of 3D realtime rendering and visualization technologies and services for the automobile, aircraft and consumer goods industries, today announced a strategic partnership of technology and knowledge cooperation.
Under the partnership, Codemasters and RTT will share expertise in automobile modeling, rendering and realization projects, such as RTT DeltaGen and RealTrace tools that enable car designers to render CAD models in realtime, and Codemasters’ EGO Game Technology Engine, which drives the critically acclaimed racing games Colin McRae: DiRT and Race Driver: GRID.
“Both companies share common goals, including a passion for technology excellence and attention to detail and quality”, said Bryan Marshall, chief technical officer, Codemasters. “These goals are demonstrated equally in such executions as the beauty of realtime ray-traced light clusters in RTT’s DeltaGen software and the mesmerizing race action and environmental detail in our own Race Driver: GRID. Any collaboration with RTT that delivers advantageous results for our development pipeline will be immensely valuable.”
“We are really happy to enter this partnership with Codemasters”, said Ludwig A. Fuchs, co-founder and member of the RTT AG Management Board. “The cooperation is of mutual interest and benefit. Together we can utilize synergies and push forward the boundaries of the 3D realtime visualization market.”

Government venture firm Malaysia Ventures (MDV) has agreed to fund a locally-developed contemporary rally racing game to the tune of US$10 million (RM36 million).
MDV managing director and chief executive officer Md Zubir Ansori Yahaya said the agreement with software firm Codemasters Studios is part of MDV’s efforts to nurture and develop local talent.
“This funding of US$10 million is for the tenure of 16 months and will be used to develop Colin McRae: DiRT 2, which features a variety of rally racing styles that expose players in aggressive multi-car and intense solo races in environments such as canyon racing, jungle trails and city stadium based events,” said Zubir. “DiRT 2 is a sequel to the very successful DiRT, which sold 1.3 million units worldwide.”
MDV is a financier and development facilitator for the information and communications technology (ICT) and high-growth sectors in Malaysia, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ministry of Finance.
Developing local talents
MDV’s Zubir said the signing marks the second partnership between MDV and Codemasters Studios. “The first being the US$12.4 million (RM44 million) for the development of the first-ever Malaysian-made computer game entitled the GRID which was launched last year. GRID was the first new-generation console and triple-A rated game ever produced in Malaysia.”
“As a financier and development facilitator of information and communications technology, biotechnology and other high-growth sectors, MDV is proud to be able to finance and be an active contributor to Codemasters Studios’ advancements,” said Zubir. “We are not only looking at assisting the content industry but also the local market in terms of creating job opportunities, especially in the current time.”
“Having grown rapidly from a team of only 30 people in 2006 to 76 people currently, we plan to increase our staff strength to 100 in the next 12 months. DiRT 2 is one of our biggest projects after the success of GRID, which was Malaysia’s first locally designed computer game,” said Maxime Villandre, general manager of Codemasters Studios.
Villandre said: “The knowledge and technology transfer has developed local talent. From specialising in animation, Codemasters Studios has now expanded its expertise to include programming, a more advanced technique in game development.”
