Consistant / Reliable European / Other sales data source?

Claimed by Sony? Are they making a big thing about not being too far behind in the Austrian market?? Way to cheer-lead!

The interview mentions that there're in fact big statistical uncertainties / margins of error. So the numbers might vary a bit depending on the extrapolation method. That's why I mentioned that those were derived by Sony, based on statistical data collected by Media Control. So the other manufacturers might draw a bit different conclusion.

Is that their second or third month with 1M+ sales (launch months in Europe) ? The total sales in EU must be fairly high.

We don't have Euro XB360 numbers, do we?

Goes to show the diversity of the European market!

Difficult to know real sales numbers in EU…we got only some PR numbers…
The only info is that "analysts" don't think (if analysts may thinks…) Sony reach their 11M PS3 WW for March, but more around 8M WW, from that you can tell that were the same quantity of PS3 in UE than US.
For France, PS3 was announce to reach the 360 in the end of 2007, but it's not really official number, around 500K

Well its not a december number. Keep in mind Sony released a similar figure for the US where they said 1.2 million sales, but december sales were under 800k via NPD. Maybe 1m of that euro figure was in december, but you can't tell from that release.

Not to mention that it's sold to retail and not to customers. Good sales nevertheless, the more interesting question is how the X360's doing in Europe.

That's just Reeves saying what we've just heard about December sales. The only extra bit of info we have is...

“It has not yet reached that in the UK. But the team here expect to overtake the installed base of Xbox 360 across all PAL territories in late summer. It’s also worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of three to one.”

A 3:1 sales ratio post Christmas with neither platform having a key sales driver probably shows a snapshot of general ratio of interest at that point across PAL territories - the interest clearly favours PS3. We don't have Christmas numbers though which would show interest with a push behind sales. Given the high price of PS3, things can surely improve considerable for Sony in this territory over the coming months and years, with price drops and software rollout. I'm not sure what MS can do. They have a quality library and a cheaper, capable system, but they're not landing the sales. If they can't fathom why (software diversity? Marketing?) then how can they ever make serious inroads to Europe?

I know. A 3:1 ratio in that week, a snapshot as I said (though ambiguously ;)) of post Christmas, post sales-rush sales.

the more interesting question is how the X360's doing in Europe.

Based on the worldwide figures announced at CES combined with NPD and MC, we can infer that Europe has maintained its ratio at roughly 35% of US sales. So the X360 isn't selling worse than before in Europe, in fact it's selling better, but the PS3 is outdoing it regardless.

It's not an estimation of actual PS3 installed base in Europe but in an interview for MCV UK David Reeves has stated that he expect the PS3 to catch up with the 360 user base by 2008 summer.
He also stated that last week sony has outsold Ms by1/3

I hear that microsoft is making 10-15% per console (not sure if its before or after RROD) So they could drop the price $50 and make it up with a single attached game to break even. (possibly for spring)

They also have the "Jasper" refresh for whipping a little extra off the price if they have to. (How many people would buy an xbox 360 if they thought that the hardware problem was solved?) Furthermore, simply removing the 3 year RROD warranty and including 1 year standard would indicate to consumers such a problem was no longer an issue.

Another cut 6 months later would be aggressive, maybe even possible (with jasper). If the Xbox sells games at the rate it currently is, they could afford to do some agressive cuts.

Speculation is now Reeves was using the old PSP+PS2+PS3 slight of hand to make the 3-1 statement.

But I guess it's up to the individual which way they believe it.

it looks like in the interview he clearly spoke about ps3 vs 360 but I haven't the interview at hand and I heardof this in a news site (french one).

But he didn't say "PS3" outsold 360 3-1" he said "We" outsold 360 3-1. And Sony has made misleading PR statements before.

Personally I'm not sure. I could see sales evidence for both interpetations.
