CES 2006 News & Announcements

Dman I want that Location Free for my PSP. I wonder want the movies will look like when I download them from Connect? And Connect will also have games that can be downloaded for the PSP too.

I don't quite get the external HD-DVD drive for xbox360 idea.

How'd you connect one to the xbox360? Would it use the xbox360 output for video, or would it have it's own video outputs (HDMI?)

What benefits would there be compared to a standalone HD-DVD player? Would it be operatable via the xbox360 "Blade" interface?

Surely it would not be possible to use it for games, would it? There just isn't a connector in xbox360 so that the external HD-DVD drive would have an interface with the xbox360 IO chips and whatever, is there?

Why would I buy one instead of a standalone HD-DVD player, unless it were much cheaper or be usable for games.

Edit: Oh, there's already a thread of it's own about this, sorry.

USB2.0 is more than fast enough. 480 mbit/s is plenty fast for an external drive.

I don't know for sure, but I'd assume it would use the 360 for decoding and video output.

I'd also guess that the 360 A/V connector everyone has been assuming is "analog-only" really has a special digital mode where it can talk to an outboard HDMI transmitter located in some sort of "digital video output" pack that has yet to be released.

Cheaper if you already have a 360. No need for the SoC, decoding, and output circuitry, it's effectively just a bare drive.

I'd guess that it would be seamlessly integrated into the existing 360 UI.

I see no technical reason why it couldn't be used for games. I see practical reasons why it'd never be used for games (splitting the user base).

Like I said above, USB2.0 is more than fast enough.

Might be possible that the HD-DVD drive connects to a USB2 port as well as the Video out, and there is a HDMI port on the drive.

The easiest, lowest-cost and most elegant way would be to connect via USB2 or the removeable HDD interface, decode with the XeCPU and then output via the normal video output.

But you would have to have HDMI, unless they plan to depend on AACS and the studios agreeing to full HD resolution output over unprotected analog component until 2011, like they've been talking about, as a transition for legacy HDTV sets with component video inputs.

Sony releases SDK for LocationFree TV

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (CES Booth # 14200) --
Building on the applications for its LocationFree(R) technology, Sony
Electronics, today announced that it will be offering a software development
kit (SDK) for the portable broadband system so people will have even greater
choices for accessing home A/V content on-the-go.

The SDK, which will be available to programmers in the U.S. beginning
later this year, will enable software developers to adapt the LocationFree
software to stream personal broadcast content to a multitude of portable
gadgets, including cell phones, PDAs and music devices.

"The software development kit will empower programmers with the tools they
need to expand this wireless broadband entertainment platform," said Robert
Bartels, director of marketing for Sony Electronics. "By making the source
code available to third-party developers, viewers will soon be able to
remotely access their favorite TV programming on a broad array of portable
electronic devices -- almost anywhere."

Looks like Sony is really serious about this LocationFree stuff. Is it possible that the Ipod will use LocationFree?

Location Free stuff is very tempting.

But the Sony product is more expensive than the Sling Box, although only the Sony supports using the PSP.

Some have speculated they might use PS3 as the base station, instead of having to buy the $350 Sony LocationFree box.

Sony wants your living room

xl1.jpg

the Vaio XL1 digital living system integrates computing with traditional home entertainment. Store and manage all of your entertainment content whether created, downloaded or purchased on disk. The XL2 version is an update to the XL1 that will be shown later on the floor -- it's the big sister to the XL1 media center system with a built-in HD tuner.

Sony really does want to own the living room. To bad this thing is really pricey. But it does have a 200 disc changer.

Sony said that ages ago...
Wasn't it all speculation at first, until the PSP got the 2.6 firmware upgrade then rumors speculations started flying again?

Sony is in a very good postion of offering a lot of features, but can the keep the price down. :(

I'm pretty sure about it. They were talking about showing pictures on your PSP from your PS3 as a home server etc... But again, I can't find it.

Maybe it was in Edge or something?

I have read that interview, I know what you're talking about.

But they never said Location Free unit tho, it was all speculation from that point on.

But if its true that PS3 will be a Location Free hub then all location free LCDs will benefit from it too. :)
