CES 2006 News & Announcements

Location Free stuff is very tempting.

But the Sony product is more expensive than the Sling Box, although only the Sony supports using the PSP.

Some have speculated they might use PS3 as the base station, instead of having to buy the $350 Sony LocationFree box.
Does the PS3 have enough inputs for it to work as a Location Free base for streaming your TV and recordings, I don't remember there being any video inputs unless that another HDMI is one, and even if it were there aren't that many DVB/HDD units with HDMI out yet.

That would limit the Location Free for PS3 just for the content stored on PS3 harddrive, that content being possibly purchased from Sony "Connect" and what is in the Blu-Ray drive.

That would be cool in itself already, but I would really like it to be possible to stream recorded TV.

Apparently the footage reel being shown includes UT2007, so maybe there's hope for some new footage generally from the other titles too.

Also, a few other new Sony Pictures Blu-ray titles have been made official (including, finally, a Spiderman title):

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Memento
Spiderman 2
Into The Blue
The Amityville Horror

The first 3 were mentioned in this PDF: http://www.sony.com/ces/pdf/Sony_CESBrochure.pdf

The last two are shown here: http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/bluray/index.html

Later on I will update the original post with all news :)

Crouching Tiger in HD will look amazing, but personally i couldn't bring myself to watch it AGAIN without slashing my wrists. Like most of the announced movies really...

Conceptual design has been used since TGS I think?
I know "conceptual design" had been used with the controller since E3. Interesting it isn't in these pictures.

(from E3)

The console design has actually gotten less curved according to some reports, but I think generally the design is locked. Which is cool, because I think its sleek.

Stringers keynote in 5hrs, hope 'tis as packed as Bills was. Doubt it'll have any PS3 info though, but theres always hope.

I like it when standing, so that the logo is horizontal. In the pictured position, it sucks.

I'd call the design "angle dependant" :devilish: ;)

Ditto. I'm liking that controller the more I look at it...

1080p sony xrd? or does it upscale?

New Standards for Home Entertainment
The biggest buzzword in HDTV is "1080p." And Sony delivers The Full Power of HD, going beyond ordinary 1080p thanks to the company's remarkable Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD) panel. DLP 1080p televisions continue to use a single chip and a color wheel which is subject to color breaking that may be visible. In contrast, Sony SXRD televisions incorporate three separate chips for red, green and blue, with two million pixels each, for color that's consistent. Sony SXRD televisions display all the pixels, all the colors, all the time. This is the way High Definition was always meant to be.

You mean besides the giant "SPRING 2006" banner sony showed at the e3 launch right?

Yeah right. if they were truly going to launch in spring, I think they would have annouced or shown a heck of a lot more than they have by now. Anyway, that (spring date) referred to Japan. I'm talking about regions outside of Japan.

June is still spring. How long before launch did MS show something? And how good was the first showing?

It's different approaches. MS showed things relatively early (still about 6 months though) but what they showed was so unfinished it all looked like crap. Sony might want to wait till they have something that will WOW the audiences - apart from CGI obviously.

I still think it's gonna be june-july for Japan and end of the year for the US. Not sure about Europe.
