CES 2006 News & Announcements

Why would Toshiba be giving royalties to Sony for cell? I thought it was a joint venture between IBM, Sony, and Toshiba and each could do what they like with it. As for why it would be cheaper, Toshiba would be manufacturing the chips themselves and are also using the chips in all their new televisions.

I don't think it matters really, there's no way the 200+ million transistor cell is going to be cheaper to produce than a celeron 600 (~30 million transistors?). It doesn't matter who is producing it.

different crowd from the E3 people I guess.

here's a pic of the crowd gathered around the PS3 demo.

There's actually alot more people than this only shows about 1/4 of the crowd.

Damn your picture has some great DOF going on there. And look at the people with their mouth's open. You would have thought this was the first time they shown those videos. Damn it pisses me off because Sony may think they can just show old footage over and over again.

Well we do have Feburary, but Sony's really scaring a brother.

– DTS-HD™ is the only technology that will deliver lossless surround sound for these new disc formats, ensuring the highest quality audio performance available in the new standards.

anything digital is lossy unless the source came from the digital domain and uses the same bit rate...or i could be reading this out of context and they are implying something else...

glad that you noticed :D I was using my Canon 35mm F2.0. I wish I'd taken more pictures of people's reactions to the PS3 demo. That was probably the most exciting part of the show. I even saw Adam Sessler walking around in the Sony booth looking frustrated because nothing new was being shown.

AFAIK "lossless" doesn't mean it loses nothing but rather just a small percentage is lost.

Tell me I'm crazy, but in what universe can a 600mhz Celeron decode VC-1 or H.264 at 1080p.

Is this model limited to lower resolutions? Or is there some dedicated DSP to take care of some of the work?

For most it probably was :p
But just imagine what those PS3 demos look like in full high-definition glory. I'd be gawking too, even though I know most are CG ;)

Like I posted earlier, they've shown more to date than they had relative to PS2. February event was the first time they shown playable games, they launched two weeks later. I doubt we'll see that again this time, but still, they're not exactly behind where they were.

Edit; Thanks for all the pics seismologist.

Isn't the MGS4 footage in the full 1080p 5.1ch glory first shown in the US?

Well actually:

A dedicated LSI will be used for decoding of image codecs such as H.264/MPEG-4 and AVC.

So I am not sure what the celeron is there for, perhaps just for the online content features.

From the link earlier in the thread.

I guess something like this will wind up as the decoder.

Mckmas you act like everyone in the world in frequenting forums all day long waiting for PS3 info. ;)

For these CES attendees I have no doubt that it *was* the first time they've ever seen PS3 demo footage.

PS: Seis did you find out about Cell going into Toshiba's sets? Nice pics by the way!

I know man, really I'm just itching for some PS3 news seriously. The thing is there's been like 0 news about it basically since TGS. I know some high Sony exec said that they were going to take the PS3 project underground for a half a year, but I didn't know he was freaking serious.

PS3 news is like crack and I'm fiending for some of it. I'm going through withdrawals.

There are a few, but a lot of the covers are hard to make out. The first post has all announced titles, plus some I added from photos like these - but not all, as there seemed to be new titles with every new photo, and it was getting hard to keep track of :p But titles there, that aren't in my list, include Basic Instinct, Matrix Revolutions, Carly Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper discs, King Arthur and a few others I can't make out entirely..

Cool thanks. Can you add them to your first post, so we can see a running total?

Thanks.
