Carmack Quakecon keynote discussion

Well, there's Valve's approach for HL2 using just a bit more information... And spherical harmonics could be far too computation heavy...
 
That's not ID's strength unfortunately. It seems they spend their resesearch budget on all aspects megatextures (compression/decompression/storing/fetching/etc.) and post-processing effects. The basic lighting scheme still looks pretty similar to Doom3.
 
I ripped the audio and listened it on the road this weekend. Carmack definitely needs a podcast, as he is really really great speaker.

As always though, one should take the technical details in his talks with a grain and of salt. :|
