ATi's R420 launch and Half-life2, some thoughts.

Sorry Dave, I'll be gooder. :(

He's a troll yeah, but I don't know about the fan-boy bit. What he said wrt the X800 and NV40 seems spot on to me.

And this place has definitly got more fan-boys running around now than when it did when I first registered.
No FREAKING comment! :devilish:

I would wait WRT to shader performances.
Baumannese translation: "The R420 is going to stomp the nV40 to bloody bits in shader performace!"

(Hey, it's only a couple more days...I can let the cat out of the bag a little, can't I? :| )

To be fair, it was always unlikely NV would win the shader battle after what ATi pulled last round. Parity was about as much as people could hope for, and - whilst they've done well - they're clearly not as far ahead in game shaders (good 3DMark synthetic scores though) as in other areas, leaving a fairly obvious place for ATi to strike.

Well, I wouldn't exactly take my comments that way, but the whole PS2.0/PS3.0 thing isn't as simple as it sounds.

Can I quote you on that? :|

Seriously, I don't know 'xactly what you mean by that but I have figured out over the last week or so that comparing these two cards isn't going to be anywhere near as simple as it's ever been before.

Apples and oranges to extremes for sure, I'm just glad that this time they're good apples compared to some pretty good looking oranges. 8)

Well, I only say that he's probably right because the NV40 has twice as many PS units than the R420. Now I know that the NV40 PS units are "shared" over the 16 pipes so the comparitive PS performance between the NV40 and R420 can't really be seen as simply 2x (there aren't many cases in computerland where double the specs meand double the performance afterall), but certainly it'd give the NV40 a definite advantage no? Also, what with the NV40's branching support, it also has a potential speed advantage there as well.

That's how I see it, but I'll glady eat this post come R420-day and it turns out I'm horribly horribly wrong.

I would not like that b/c my other emails change and it gets annoying to keep up with it... btw I don't know if I used hotmail account to register here or not heheh.

DW I got a coupon now too !! oh boy... but I want a CD in my hot little hands so steam won't cut it for me.

This is what I want to know can you register with steam and still get a CD? The ATI site talking about it was fairly vague I started to fill out the info b/c it seemed like you could do both but then I quit...

Ok so they have already pissed off everyone who bought an ATi card with a hl2 voucher, now you think they should piss off everyone else to make it fair?

Not gonna happen. They aren't that stupid.

Oh really? Its not like they wont make 95% of gamers mad, by having to install Steam in the first place.

Fact or speculation ?
PaulS noted that Ratchet will have to eat his post, so I'd suggest it's a false speculation, cause PaulS and Mufu usually are the most reliable (non NDA'ed) sources.

Not as far as I know. 1 unit per pipe...

I probably should shutup actually...

Incorrect. R300 support two ALU's per pipeline - one fully featured ALU and a second that support PS1.4 modifiers as well as "other instructions" (which ATI are not at all keen on giving away on). With Co-issue and dual issue R300's pipeline can operate 4 PS instructions per clock - 5 if you include a texture access as it has a separate texture address processor.

While ALU performance tells us about the potential hardware capabilities one of the biggest factors is also about utilisation. This involves having balanced hardware and also very good software utilisation.

So can you put that in perspective for me wrt the NV40 Shader abilities?

I hope you're right. After all the BS nV pulled over the last year+ I don't think they deserve to have the fastest card.

Looks like Dig won't need any Viagra tonight.
I'm not allowed it anymore, heart-attack survivors + viagra = repeat cardiologist business. :(

It hasn't been a problem and my wife is SOOO relieved too! (If you don't get that, watch Robin Williams latest stand-up from HBO... ;) )

Sorry, I won't carry over any more of the melodrama...I'm just a bit miffed at Ratchet lately.

My apologies for carrying it over here to the staff, members, and most of all Ratchet. I'll keep it confined to over at EB if'n that's alright with you. (But I'm STILL gonna laugh at ya and say "I told ya so!!!" if you're wrong anywhere I see you on the web after the launch! I'm kind of juvenille that way ;) )
